This is what Sci-Fi gets for trying to do Flash Gordon on the cheap. Portals and Earth settings? WTF were they thinking? I haven't even ragged on the writing and casting! To think great shows like Farscape and Firefly are left to die while crap like this gets greenlighted.
Does anyone knows the name of the song in the Doctor Who/flash gordon hybrid commercial on the sci fi channel. It sounds so good, i can't get the tune out of my head, it sounds kinda English, and it goes something like this " I am Neee, I am Eee, I am " ... something like that, i couldn't catch what they were saying but it sounds good.

I don't think it's about being PC as much as it is trying to avoid being blatantly racist by portraying Ming as the Fu Manchu wearing evil Asian caricature that the comics, serials and even 1980's movie included. The only reason Ming was Asian in the first place (in the original comic) was due to racism, so it really doesn't bother me that he's not Asian. He's a Ming for the new century. If only the quality of the show itself didn't make me wanna kick it back into the old one.
Okay... I can see that. But an Asian Ming would be cooler. I will agree w/ you that the Fu Manchu costume is outdated and should not be used. I'm suggesting a cool Jet Li type for Ming. Thanks for the feedback.
Oooh... I didn't think of that. Jet Li is definitely more intimidating than the "Nazi Ken Doll" they have sucking the life out of Ming's scenes right now. You're right, they could have just cast somebody Asian, but chosen not to give the character any of the classic racist propaganda. He could have been an actual bad-ass... Now I'm kind of disappointed too.
There's never been an "Asian" Ming; the character himself is an extraterrestrial, and the actors who have played him, most notably Charles Middleton (from Kentucky, USA) and Max von Sydow (from Lund in Sweden) have all been Occidental.
I see what your saying but if you were a superhero and you came up up to me and said: "I have an arch enemy, his name is Ming the Merciless." I would picture a kick ass Asian bad guy, not a slicked hair used car salesman, like Sci Fi Channel's Flash Gordon.
Lol, I hear ya-- especially since traditionally Ming is bald. Curiously enough, I've just been reading Alex Raymond's original comic strips, and it's interesting to note that the bold, selfless, and heroic Prince Barin is just as "yellow" as Ming is; so much for the "racism."
btw, if anyone wants to see a GOOD sci-fi action adventure show, there's one on my channel called 'Cataclysmo and the Time Boys" It's closer to Flash Gordon than the Sci Fi channel could manage.
