I actually like Robbie's version of the song -- as do millions of people worldwide (as evidenced by over 13 million YouTube views of Robbie's version). I was just observing that David has reintroduced it to a US audience. (I hear Robbie wrote this, so he should be happy for the royalties.) And, I don't hear a 'wimpy' song, I hear a 'hopeful' and 'inspirational' song. And, to modify an expression, beauty is in the ear of the beholder. Nothing has been ruined here. It has been reinterpreted.
