@TheBuilderguy1 I just started a forum at my blog. It's only been up for a few days so it's very quiet but I will be happy to give detailed advice there.
I think they''re very pretty flies; I've just started raising them for pet food locally; my Jack Dempseys love them and my red wigglers get really fat on BSFL poo, and my garden loves the worm poo. For pet food I'm feeding mostly cornmeal, but I'm still experimenting. They are really clean to handle that way. I've enjoyed reading the plethora of helpful information you share online, BlackSoldierFly. THANKS!
thanks for sharing though i still hate worms, they make my skin, blood every thing just crawls, i dont know what u call that fear but I have it, i understand you point though, bless
@614queenbee 12% of landfills is rotting food. These larvae could eat that waste and they could be used as nutritious animal feed. A problem (waste) becomes something valuable (animal feed). This is sustainability. These insects are harmless and carry no human diseases. Our disgust for natural processes like this one put us at odds with nature instead of in harmony with it. Rejecting nature is like peeing your pants to get warm, it works for a while, but eventually fails completely.
@BlackSoldierFly I love that you are one with nature but this part of it I just can't stomach, god bless you dear better you than me, its just a phobia i've had for years (worms or any thing that looks like or moves like a worm), I wanna be cremated cuz of these things... its sad but true... Bless
@PrivateChadillac I don't know it's entirely accurate to say they don't have mouths, but they aren't designed to consume food. I've read that BSF have been seen sipping nectar from flowers and I once witnessed one apparently "licking" some jelly. I hypothesize that while BSF can live the 5-8 days as adults on stored fat, that they still must need to take in some liquids and perhaps some simple carbohydrates. If they do indeed have tongues, then that would allow for some nice French kissing.
Nope. The adult BSF flies don't even have working mouth parts because they don't eat. They only live a few days for the purpose of mating so they just live off of stored fat. All stages of BSF are completely harmless.
BSF grubs emit pheromones that repel other species of flies. This is one of their best attributes because BSF don't transmit diseases like housefies and other pest flies. Studies have shown them to reduce houseflies in waste by between 94% and 100%. Besides the chemical repellent the large BSF grubs completely dominate an appropriate food source effectively crowding out other flies.
Check your data Onix, black soldier flies are not capable of doing that. Also, they don't eat any live tissue, they primarily eat rotting fruit, vegetables and grains. Please don't post incorrect information, do your research first.
The comment you said six months ago,I think you are talking about the fly that is 2 times larger than a house fly sends their larvae to a mosquito and when a mosquito bite a living thing the larvae falls down to the body and hatches quickly on warm places then eats live tissue.
Treatment-put vaseline i think and remove with tweasers i think i have a wrong spelling on tweasers.
He was probably thinking of bot flies the larvae of which do develop under the skin. There are over 100,000 species of flies and as it turns out black soldier flies are as harmless as butterflies and almost as pretty.
Black soldier fly larvae are the same species sold as "Phoenix worms" as food for reptiles and amphibians. The BSF colony is an amazing way to compose kitchen waste which many times more efficient than conventional composting. You can check out my blog if you're curious. There's a link in the video description.
I want to stick my hand in there and feel them wriggle :D

if adults dont have mouths, because all they do is mate, how do they kiss each other?

There, there, tokingmadd, we need scavengers to clean up after us. We must show our appreciation by not getting sick. :P
