Wash with warm cooked water and then use a hot knife from a fire and burn it a bit is your best bet.. doing this is totally not correct.

Please do not try this or do this if you are cut follow my instructions with a burning hot knife to burn it enough to stop bleeding.

I understand the thought behind the process, but the only time you ever need cauterize a wound like this is if it was a hemoraging wound, or if you were trying to sterilize severe septic tissue, and only in a desperate (ie- Combat) situation. A better use of the mud and moss would've been to make a makeshift compress on it. But since that could lead to greater risk of infection he should've used safe water and irrigate it, or pissed on it (The ammonia in urine is a natural antisceptic).
