i know it is a youtube cliche to say 'do you see the dislike bar, either do I' but i really cant see a dislike bar on this. not even a litle tiny bit of red on that bar!
"...Its cycles run from our ordinary day and night to a day and night of Brahma, 8.64 billion years long. Longer than the age of the Earth or the Sun and about half the time since the Big Bang. And there are much longer time scales still."
Two parts: "The Hindu religion is the only one of the world's great faiths dedicated to the idea that the Cosmos itself undergoes an immense, indeed an infinite, number of deaths and rebirths. It is the only religion in which the time scales correspond, to those of modern scientific cosmology..."
I can hardly wait for 2013, for the sequel to Carl Sagan's Cosmos, in which Neil Degrasse Tyson will be hosting it. Downside it will be on fox, not PBS.
@matthaufan97 Cosmos being on FOX is a good thing. The people who watch FOX are the people who need to see Cosmos the most. By putting it on FOX, they are essentially guaranteeing that its impact will be greater, because everyone who is planning to watch it anyway will go to FOX, and FOX viewers will trust it more because it's on that channel.
Neil degrasse is a true genius, if you want to read more about questions asked to him check this reddit article out: reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/mateq/i_am_neil_degrasse_tyson_ama/
@sockyquest someone wrote up an anecdote (you know what Carl said about extraordinary claims though) of someone who claimed to have worked at a pizza delivery.
One night of similar frosty weather Carl Sagan ordered 3 large pepperonis and invited the delivery guy in for a scotch, because it was so cold and he delivered it fast.
There were some very happy people in the house and it smelled of a certain herb.
Most amazing person ever to have lived, Neil Tyson is second.
This literally makes me want to cry. Not only for the kindness of Sagan, the duty and humility of Tyson, but for the scientific abandonment our generation as a whole. We are slowly transitioning back to the dark ages.
These people are one in a billion. And instead of giving them the recognition for there invaluable contributions to humanity, we make shows like Jersey Shore and listen to people like Kanye West. We are so fucked in the long run.
@Blurtex33 Also, btw, most people (like me, an Athiest) acknowledge that Christ was real. There are records of that. You're getting him confused with god/s.
@FantasmaTom To be fair, There is no contemporary evidence for Jesus’ existence or the Bible’s account of his life; no artefacts, dwellings, works of carpentry, self-written manuscripts, court records, eyewitness testimony, official diaries, birth records, reflections on his significance or written disputes about his teachings. Nothing survives from the time in which he is said to have lived.
@Blurtex33 Okay, fair enough. But I don't think many Athiests go around saying "I don't belive in Christ's existence". Thanks for the understanding reply (:.
@FantasmaTom "christ" is a translation of "messiah". The Jesus stories are probably based on a real person, but to call him "christ" is a religious (or rather, a christian) proclamation.
This really gives insight to how great of a person Carl Sagan was to anyone with any doubt. There is no one I would rather meet then Carl Sagan, I'm saddened by the fact I never knew of him when he was alive...though, through his books, his speeches, he lives on...He did with me like I'm sure has happened to many others...he taught me to learn, to be educated, be compassionate, caring...and above all, loving of my fellow man.
I'd love to rewind my life a few years back to high school and get into the sciences. I'm 18 now, and have embarked on a career in business which I doubt I'll ever sway from. It seems as if Scientists start young.
Carl Sagan, with all his faults (and let's not pretend he was without them, he probably wouldn't have liked that with the way he approached life and reality), was quite possibly the greatest advocate for scientific progress and also an especially avid voice for the progress of people as well.
He lived his philosophy of searching for truth through rigourous skepticism and desire for evidence as well as striving to be the best person he could be. He is a role model for all of humanity.
I'm sure Sagan would have been proud to know that Tyson is going to be the new voice of Cosmos. I can't wait to see the sequel, it's about time American TV caught up with the BBC with all the shows they are making about the universe.
@adrenacrumb In another interview he explained why: he knew that professors change universities all the time and Harvard had the much better+bigger astronomy department. So choosing the university just because of Carl Sagan would not have been a wise decision.
it came to discover that there was many more ice/rock planet size floating around in the outter part of our solar system. pluto was one of those, so if we consider pluto still a planet, we must add like several other planets to the list. so what they did, was to narrow it down to what is classified as a planet. and pluto was just a icy ball of rock
