If you don't sew around the edge its hard to evenly trimming the excess foam and it causes problems following your seam allowance when sewing to another peace. Every one has there own way of doing things there isn't really a right or wrong way in this industry. I personal don't consider a small extra step to make things easier and the end product better a waste of time at all. Thanks for watching the video and providing advice to the viewers for another way of doing things!
Great work, exactly the style of upholstery that I need for my 1923 Fiat :) I just bought a 1950ish sterling sewing machine for $30 (Aust.)... Tried it out tonight and it works great! Need some practice though :P
I get most of my supplies from keyston bros. The online store "perfict fit" is a pretty good place as well. Glad I could help! More videos will be coming soon!
great vid, you make it look to easy though lol. I will have to try this but i really love that diamond pleated style would this work for that two if i did a criss cross pattern
Yes it will... but the calculations are a little harder because you have to find a diamond size that fits in to you peace with out getting cut off . Your not the first one to ask about diamonds. We will try to post a video on that when we get some free time.
Hello, I found this very usefull. I have been doing basic custom interior work with mainly newer car that only require going overtop of existing panels, etc. Anybody can glue new material over a headliner or door panel insert, etc. I'm trying to learn how to build an interior from scratch. I see the top professional upholstery guys using wood, foam, metal, etc. to mock up a custom interior from scratch. Any ideas? Most custom interior books aren't that detailed.
I would only recommend using an industrial walking foot sewing machine. The smaller machines just dont have what it takes to sew heavy fabrics like leather and vinyl. You can find great deals for sewing machines on craigslist. The machine I use in the videos is brand new but I also have an old Juki lu-562 that I have been using for years and it works great. Thanks for watching the videos. Hope this helps!
I use a a piece of tape that is 1/2 inch away from the needle to keep my seam allowance lined up. I have a video up called "How to basic sewing and tips". You can find it on our channel. In curved sections it helps to make relief cuts. Hope that help!
Thanks for the reply! I try and mark on the back as well. My problem was making the pleat marks, I use chalk and with all the shufflin, foldin material to stitch them lines get messed up and disappear. I often go back over a few times with chalk to keep my lines. I used china marker and man I tried soap and every cleaner I could think of that wouldn't hurt the material and finally 'pledge' came close with some elbow grease, but wasn't fun. Thanks again!
Hey anytime! Glad to help. Yeah I don"t like to use chalk on pleats either. Some times I will go to an art store with the peace of material I am using and start marking the fabric with every pencil , crayon or any thing I can find and seeing if it will rub off with a little water. Ive found some good pencils that way.
@6t5 I don't like to mark on the face of any project with any thing that wont come off with water. If you are having trouble removing some marks you made 303 vinyl cleaner works great and some times silicon spray works if all else fails.
Hey!Thanks for watching! As for how many days it takes to upholster a car... That's really hard to say. There are so many variables that make things take longer. It could take any were from a week to months depending on what is being done to the car.
Thank You for taking the time to make a informative video. I have finally found a resource that gets it right....as in high standards and good quality. Very easy to understand!
good tutorial and your hot btw

why not just glue the fabric to foam instead of adding extra seams on the ends! thats a waist of time! spray both the fab and foam it works better!

Do you have any other suggestions other than relief cuts when sewing rounded corner pleats in? I would love to see a video on this :) Thanks!

Great video. Thank you John!!
I just started to learn auto upholstery.
My biggest hang-up is "How to Sew Together Two Parts with same seam allowance ? specially in curved part."
Do you mark seam line on under side of material ? or use something like seam edge guide.
Thanks

Thanks for the vid dood! Question: What do you use to safely remove those stray china marker/grease pen marks off your vinyl project? Thanks
