R.I.P. to original Miracles member Marvin "Marv" Tarplin (whose guitar you can hear on this song) -June 13, 1941 – September 30, 2011 Chosen as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists and songwriters of ALL TIME by Britain's MOJO music magazine. A winner of the ASCAP AWARD OF MERIT, THE BMI SONGWRITERS AWARD , and recieved a STAR with the rest of THE MIRACLES on the HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME Marv....you will be missed !!!
This song represents two genres: doop-wop and soul. The two met briefly between 1959 and 1961, and when they did, it was pure perfection! As evidence...
That's true, there was a rather phenominal brief period, mainly spanning the years of just 1959-1960 during the Motor City's early formative period where an experimental crossover type of R&B with different beats and sounds, and some fusion with doo wop as well, which would later gave rise to soul in about 1961, when the Marvelettes recorded "Please Mr. Postman", paving the way for the Motown Sound in general. The Miracles continued with that experiment until by early 1963 though.
@tbear4pa Soul as a genre was introduced to mainstream music with 'Dancing In The Street.' This recent misnomer about Soul music as a genre being played prior to 63 is a very recent inaccuracy [last 25 years.] The different beats, sounds of the 50's early 60's R&B was by no means a fusion with Doo Wop. Both solo and Doo Wop vocal groups were all experimenting with different tempos, Latin influences and orchestral accompanyment for longer than a couple of years. This was popular til around 1963.
@tbear4pa This Miracles tune is in the Doo Wop style as is The Marvelettes "Please Mr. Postman". Listen to the Chess, Atlantic and Tamla Motown records of this era [52-62] and then listen to 'Dancing In The Street.' from 63. U will hear when the sound actually moved on to Soul.
As The Funk Brother stated in 'Standing In The Shadows' film, up until 1963 Motown was putting out the same Doo Wop and Blues records as everyione else. be careful with your facts, as this disrespects the true pioneers!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! I have searched all the Miracles Greatest Hit Albums and this song was never on them until the classic CD. This is the most awsome song they put out; and this is the first time I could get it up on YouTube. Thank you and love you for posting.
Thank you so much for this song this is one of my all time favorites, been searching for this one, did not know it was on chess records. Definitely memories of the old time basement parties from the early 60's. Thank you the rest of my life is complete now.
