  • It's my own software. But you can buy similar products online. One is called MusicReader.

  • I love the digital music display - can you tell me what setup you're using?

  • Wish I could join!!!

  • Fantastic! Just downloaded your disc from E music. Would love to see a live performance someday. Coming to Northern California anytime soon? Guaraldi inspired me to play jazz. The soundtracks from the TV specials stuck to me like glue. Keep up the great work!!

  • Fantastic jazz playing. A wonderful tribute to Guaraldi's genius.

  • stellar performance! nice job.

  • The sheet music he's looking at probably only shows chords, the rest is improved...awesomely I might add

  • lovely!!

  • Vince Guaraldi is one of my biggest influences. This is the closest thing to Vinces style I've heard. LOVE IT!!!

  • oh i just found the link in the video info. wicked!

  • amazing!! where can i get your cd?

    seriously.

  • MOAR! :)

  • Great Job!!

I doubt this was from sheet music. You have to have an ear for those types of jazz phrasings. It would be punishing to try and play that from sheet music. Relying on sheet music is a crutch anyway.

I totally disagree with the sheet music approach of how music is taught today. It is training people to never really know how to play. Music should come from within one's self, not be a mechanical rendering of written notes off a printed page.

    You guys OWNED that song!!

  • I agree somewhat. But i believe that in order to write well you must also read well. The creativity comes into play with jazz. Jazz sheet music gives you a foundation and lets you build as high as you want providing much room for preference and improve.

  • I'm sure Vince would agree.

  • Your absoultely correct! thanks for expressing where music shud come frm

  • That's quite an opinion. You must be insanely good at what you do.

  • "you must be insanely good at what you do..."

Not really. Some days everything just clicks with my playing and other days it is a complete disaster.

Either way, I just cannot enjoy playing unless it is coming from the heart.

I am well trained in sight reading, but gave it up years ago and would need a lot of practice to get back up to the level I once was with it.

But I will definitely say, learning to play by ear was a lot easier than learning the insane classical reading I used to do.

  • My guess is that your playing used to sound more like a "mechanical rendering of written notes off a printed page", then you learned to listen while you play and now blame sheet music for your once under-developed ear.

I bet if you regained your reading chops, your opinion on this subject would change. You would improve as a player.

  • @baguazhang77 @baguazhang77 Being a classically trained bassist ( M.M. and B.M.) - here's my take...music comes from within, it has nothing to do with reading music or not. You can have a passion for it, love it, and immerse yourself in it - whether you read or not. I can improvise off chord charts AND read. If you can do both, great, you'll be a better musician. I'm not doing anything mechanical when I'm performing in the bass section of an orchestra, reading something Beethoven composed.

  • @bearbass63 I am not taking anything away from reading. I think reading is harder than improvising. I too am classically trained and used to sight read extremely well. My point is simply that proper music training should enable people to play without sheet music, which I do not think is usually the case today. But, I'll admit that excellent reading is essential in an orchestra type setting, which I unfortunately cannot do because I let my reading slip. So, I just enjoy the skill set I have :-)

  • Where did you get the piano sheet music, or did you transcribe it yourself?

  • You were all wonderful. The piano is so much like Guaraldi himself. He is one of my favorites. My only regret was that I never saw him in a live performance.

  • Great recording, I love how well you guys handled the dynamics.

  • wow! This sounds amazing! Great job guys!

  • UHH. this isnt the vince guaraldi trio.

  • "The Jazz Arts Trio plays 'Freeway' as performed by the Vince Guaraldi Trio"

  • Reading is tough.

  • Kudos to the transcriber! Beautifully played and recorded. I have a book of Guaraldi transcriptions but this is not among them. This is one of his best tunes, recorded only once in '62. What a pleasure it is to have this on YouTube....great work!

  • I agree! Excellent job guys! Thanks for sharing!

  • flawless cover xlent

  • Is this really Guaraldi here on the piano? I love his work!

  • Nah, Guaraldi is long gone.

  • Ohhh....ok this is just an informal jam session I'm seeing here. Sorry, I should know that Guaraldi has been long gone. :)

  • Freddie--I just found this. Marvelous. Great fun and awesome sound. When did this get started--the trio?

    The Infamous Liz

  • Fantastic! Vince would be proud. Looking forward to hearing more of your trio. Best of luck.

  • Love it!!!

  • Excellent job! Standing ovation in Dallas! I love Vince Guaraldi and found you wonderful guys! I look forward to hearing more! ;)

  • Wow... I can't figure out any of Vince's early stuff. Great work. Do you have anything else by him?

  • Good performance! And for one time, not a peanuts song...There so many great songs in Guaraldi repertoire! Thanks!
