I read that the race were not stopped because the race control thought it was a camp fire of some fans. Look at this cloud of smoke. How can you actually think this is a camp fire?
I have always wished David had tried to "leverage himself" between that overturned rear wheel of Rogers car and the guardrail behind him, in his first effort to turn the upturned car over. Easier for me to think of it, I'm sure, as I'm a tall galoot (and perhaps he just as easily dismissed it as quite impossible himself in the same way within the blink of an eye)...but I will still always wonder if it might not have made a difference.
I think David Purley really tried, that day. A good soul.
If someone asked me what is 'courage'. I would show them the efforts of David Purley. A man who put his own life at risk to try and save the life on another, while people just stood by and watched. RIP to both Roger and David
That tragic was not becouse of the marshalls, the main problem was in that time. The marshalls didnt wear any protective suit, so they couldnt help :-( In present everyone has protective suits, incl. helmets, etc.. The only think what could help there were if the other drivers stopped and helped David
It's unfortunaly that quite a few men were there close to the car but with no fire extinguisers. Only the pilot really were trying to save his friend and the rest of it were just watching the whole scene.
Only one man stopped his car and wanted to help save the lives of a friend. No one more will not stop. Shame. Human life is the highest value, no cup is not as valuable. Only a true hero knows what is currently the most important ...
no driver is to be blamed for this lack of concern.. all of them lead by jackie stewart rallied for safety at tracks at which the track owners and media laughed saying they should look to knitting needles and grand prix if for the men...
this is what was expected of them and races continued inspite of deaths at races....
the great Jim Clark also died during one of the races..... the race continued.... there was a winner and he cried on the podium... many were in shock after the race..
What the fuck is this? Only David Purley is trying to do something...The other 3 is just standing and looking at it. The worst part is that Roger died of asphyxiation and not from the burns...
Roger managed only 2 races, should've been more. I'm glad that David got the George Medal for this, To bad he died in that plane crash 1985.
@feffecrazy The other three were race marshalls who weren't wearing flame retardant clothing. If they got any closer to the wreck, they would have been very badly burned, if not killed. F1 fuel burns hot. Race control initially believed that Purley was Williamson, attempting to put his own car out. And as such, that was the word that was put out to all the drivers on the track.
im sorry but for the race to continue like that while there is some1 burning inside a car is fucked..those people should have been the people in that car. a person dies and they keep on racing for what?? a couple points to win a shitty chamionship.. thats fucked and disgraceful on those people..the marshalls that stand and watch purley try to upright the car a pussies.
I've just been watching the same program, absolutely shocking and heart breaking at the same time. D Purley GM was ex HMF, you don't leave your mates when they need help.

@fozziebear26 Was it a documentary about horrible F1 crashes and lack of safety in the 50's 60's and 70's ? If so, this accident is the last thing we see in this documentary. I'm not a real car races fan at all, but this video touched me a lot :(

However, the drivers of the cars still in the race couldn't have known that Roger Williams was still in the car, they may have just thought it was an ordinary car fire, it's the marshals fault, that plus the fact it took them 8 MINUTES to get help.
i cant belive the marshals did nothing , he was in the car fr 8 minuets before the fire truck even came and you could hear the screams and he had his arm out reaching for someone , anyone to help , but no only one man came to try and help , but cudnt do anything

@Wicked1506 death was a common occurence in the 60's/70's days of f1. 2/3 drivers to race in those days died during racing. Many of them burning to death.
@Wicked1506 it was actually a massive amount of confusion. Roger and dave were teammates so drivers thought he was flippin over his own car because his parked on the rode was non visible due to smoke

@DjWth2 it shows you have respect for the person, yeah i dont like what happened , no shit my bestfriend died at an age of 8 in a car accident hopefully you get what im saying
@JayJeezy0009 How can you like this video. A video of someone dying a slow death in a flaming car with no means of escape. I don't see how anyone can like this video.

@TheMrJevz i sent me to this from your black ops video. i agree this is very sadenning . i just wanted to let u know what u mean in your commentary and i was just left speachless watching this.
Nothing has ever made me feel so emotional in my life. Those nobends could easily have saved him. The man was only 25 for christs sake! Ourly is a hero and the only f1 driver I can respect for being selfless to the point of risking his life for someone elses.
so sad...to think there is actually people out there who will continue to race for first place when someone is dieng??? honestly? ffs...the human race is sick.
@VDiabloV1 Your a fool. I can guarantee NOBODY racing knew what was going on. At 200km/h you cannot see what the hell is happening around you. They had no idea. If you stopped you would likely be hit. You need to have more faith your pathetic.
@VDiabloV1 yeah sure big scorching fire and another formula car parked aside ...they didn't see it...you're fucking dumb and just as pathetic as the greedy racers.
Wow the marshals regardless if they had the proper gear, just stood there in despair.. the drivers did nothing either.. the fire extiguisher guy was absolute joke.. casual jog to the man burning alive in a car crash.. I'm not saying they should be heroes but come on, how could you live with yourself knowing that you half heartedly left some guy to burn to death..
W0W this is so so sad....I can almost feel the utter helpless feeling David Purly must have felt...Like WHY THE FUCK Didnt the other drivers top and help ? Did they only care about the race or what?
MrXcees im sorry youre to stupid to read. But i was referring to Donn91 for laughing at this vid if you look at my previous comment you will see. BUT YOU are a total RETARD for not reading correctly and starting to flame on me.
this is why i fucking hate people! you're just standing there not helping and the others are carring on racing? what the fuck ? stop fucking racing and help!! omg i would of killed every single person there for not helping.
i blame everyone apart from david purley, the drivers should of stopped the bastards, and the stewards just standing around doing nothign. its bullshit. R.I.P
@Sheamus72 Because Driving is their life, If your a football player and your about to score a goal and a Member of the oppisite team collapse' and the ref doesn't call it, are you gonna stop pick up the ball and see if he's ok. I know different scynario but that player could be having a stoke/heart attack basically anything but your not gonna stop because if your team wins than thats some money for you.
@TunzTheDonV9 Fuck that money! This world isn't built only on money. And fuck the goal! You can replay the match at any other fucking day. So instead thinking "Ohh...my 100 millions aren't enough, I need those 20 millions more by scoring the goal, fuck that dead guy", you should rethink and ask yourself, would YOU be happy, if everyone else just keeps going on with what they are doing at the moment while you will be dieing?
God damn it, we are already putting money over peoples life, it's sick!
@dope187 I never said that i would do that, i was just explaining thought that would go through other peoples heads, and its not easy for some people to be macho man, a lot of people could've just been afraid of getting hurt themself or even worse dying
@TunzTheDonV9 Ok then, I understand that. But the F1-racers wouldn't get in any way into danger, if they've had stopped there and helped Purley to pull his friend out of the car. They were wearing fire-resistant overalls i think. It's just the fact NO ONE ELSE was even TRYING to do something. That's the sad thing about it. There was no danger for anyone else but for the man inside the burning car.
i wonder if the people who are standing next to the car ever watched this video, if you read this.. you should burn in hell for all eternity, a man is burning to death 5 ft from you and you dont help him.. imagine how helpless his co-driver felt.. i cried my eyes out at this and im a grown man.. sickening.
wow what selfish comments who cares what the music is this guy just wiped out and died while other people just drove around him how could you even think about the music you aasses
@CreeperGriefer It looks like the guy was waving a caution flag but WHAT THE FUCK. They should have completely stopped the race and let the workers clean up the accident. They were just fucking retarded. Totally agree with you.
I just saw this for the first time in a documentary during the Montreal Grand Prix 2011. I cried like a baby...poor men. Him in the car...his friend Purley trying to do something to help...the idiots standing there doing...nothing...the other drivers going on thinking he's out of the car...the fans looking on...what a horrible moment for bravery to achieve nothing...I'm so sorry for David Purley,..still crying
Several times I have seen this film, and everytime it saddens and sickens me to see the helplessness of one man trying to save his friends life while others stand around clueless. Off camera to the left, and unknown to the viewing public at the time, spectators rushed to help but were stopped by security guards with dogs.
Although his efforts were in vain,I'll always remember the actions of David Purley. He put his friend's life before his own safety.
Formula One in the 60s and 70s saw many drivers die. Tracks were unsafe, marshalls were employed with no fire fighting skills or protection, cars had no structural tests and fuel tanks were mobile bombs. Jackie Stewart was the forebearer for improving safety, not Ecclestone. Its been 17 years since Senna died, but other drivers will die..sometime. Schuey almost had his head taken off in Abu Daubi last year! Nature of the game..
this is fucking joke they just stood there looking like they had no clue what to do i feel really bad for the one driver that tried to help...........RIP
Hard to say what thinking about Purley's bravery, REAL bravery, maybe. but he self had a piece of s..t end only as 40yrs old. Today they give all thanks to ecclestone and sid watkins to developed safety of F1 cars to top level. Ecclestone was responsible for safety in time when Peterson and Co died.
I would have headbutted the rest of those men with my crash helmet and beat the crap out of them for standing there watching me try to save my friend when they are literally one foot away from the crash site with me.
It's shocking to see the heroism of one man thwarted by the apathy and cowardice of so many others. I don't think the music is even necessary, just watch Purley's desperate body language and compare it to the cringing and slouching of the officials.
David Purley was awarded the George medal for his brave efforts in trying to save Roger Williamson. The George medal is Britain's highest award for civilian bravery.
SEEN ACCIDENT FOR THE FIRST TIME. DAVID PURLEY WAS INDEED A VERY BRAVE MAN. HOW TRAGIC THAT HE WILL BE BEST REMEMBERED FOR TRYING TO SAVE A FRIEND- BUT ALSO A GREAT MEMORIAL

@TeqniquesHD
They did want to help, but:
1. Not enough fire extinguishers at the side of the track: impossible to put out the fire.
2. No fire-proof clothing for the marshalls: too much heat to help David Purley push the car over.
3. No stopping of the race: fire trucks could not safely rush to the scene because cars were still racing.
4. Other drivers racing at 200km/h: could not notice the situation quick enough.
Blame the organisation, not the marshalls or drivers.

How can people just drive about while a man dies. They must have no soul what so ever
Sheamus72 8 months ago
@Sheamus72 Because Driving is their life, If your a football player and your about to score a goal and a Member of the oppisite team collapse' and the ref doesn't call it, are you gonna stop pick up the ball and see if he's ok. I know different scynario but that player could be having a stoke/heart attack basically anything but your not gonna stop because if your team wins than thats some money for you.
TunzTheDonV9 8 months ago
@TunzTheDonV9 Fuck that money! This world isn't built only on money. And fuck the goal! You can replay the match at any other fucking day. So instead thinking "Ohh...my 100 millions aren't enough, I need those 20 millions more by scoring the goal, fuck that dead guy", you should rethink and ask yourself, would YOU be happy, if everyone else just keeps going on with what they are doing at the moment while you will be dieing?
God damn it, we are already putting money over peoples life, it's sick!
dope187 8 months ago
@dope187 I never said that i would do that, i was just explaining thought that would go through other peoples heads, and its not easy for some people to be macho man, a lot of people could've just been afraid of getting hurt themself or even worse dying
TunzTheDonV9 8 months ago
@TunzTheDonV9 Ok then, I understand that. But the F1-racers wouldn't get in any way into danger, if they've had stopped there and helped Purley to pull his friend out of the car. They were wearing fire-resistant overalls i think. It's just the fact NO ONE ELSE was even TRYING to do something. That's the sad thing about it. There was no danger for anyone else but for the man inside the burning car.

2278raven 8 months ago
Several times I have seen this film, and everytime it saddens and sickens me to see the helplessness of one man trying to save his friends life while others stand around clueless. Off camera to the left, and unknown to the viewing public at the time, spectators rushed to help but were stopped by security guards with dogs.
Although his efforts were in vain,I'll always remember the actions of David Purley. He put his friend's life before his own safety.
A true gentleman.
A Hero.
Rest In Peace
ImBigRich1970 9 months ago 3
Formula One in the 60s and 70s saw many drivers die. Tracks were unsafe, marshalls were employed with no fire fighting skills or protection, cars had no structural tests and fuel tanks were mobile bombs. Jackie Stewart was the forebearer for improving safety, not Ecclestone. Its been 17 years since Senna died, but other drivers will die..sometime. Schuey almost had his head taken off in Abu Daubi last year! Nature of the game..
AlberRatman 9 months ago
this is fucking joke they just stood there looking like they had no clue what to do i feel really bad for the one driver that tried to help...........RIP

Ablack51 11 months ago
It's shocking to see the heroism of one man thwarted by the apathy and cowardice of so many others. I don't think the music is even necessary, just watch Purley's desperate body language and compare it to the cringing and slouching of the officials.
DissorderedArray 11 months ago
David Purley was awarded the George medal for his brave efforts in trying to save Roger Williamson. The George medal is Britain's highest award for civilian bravery.
maninthestreet01 11 months ago
SEEN ACCIDENT FOR THE FIRST TIME. DAVID PURLEY WAS INDEED A VERY BRAVE MAN. HOW TRAGIC THAT HE WILL BE BEST REMEMBERED FOR TRYING TO SAVE A FRIEND- BUT ALSO A GREAT MEMORIAL
