Hey, I catch these in my local waters with castnets everytime I go fishing. I have one in my fishtank as well. He has red fin tips, and I assume that is the male (let me know if I am right). Now for my question. Is it hard to breed them? I had my catfish for about a month now, and he is alone in the tank at the moment. Should I get him a female? Also, how would I go about breeding them. Any information you could provide on my hyplo would help. Thank you, and love your videos.
Yes. The fish with strong and reddish pectoral fin spines is the male. This species has special requirements for the spawning tank, but I dont think it is then too difficult to breed. First get one or two females for the male and start feeding them heavily with soaked flake food and live and frozen foods until the females get fat.
For spawning ensure that there are enough plant material for nest building and the water surface is not moving too fast. Rise the temperature to 28-30 Celcius in one day maybe combined with a 50% water change a day or two earlier.
The nest building begins at night and the fishes spawn daytime. Hoplosternum has spawning rituals much like Corydoras. The female attaches her eggs to plants inside the nest. The eggs hatch after four days and the fry start eating three days after the hatching. Move the eggs to a raising tank or leave them with the male untill they hatch. Feed the fry with microworms and artemia. Later start giving crushed flake food.
That is great news. I was wondering if the females should be removed after spawning, or should I just leave them alone in the tank? Also, my hoplo loves chichken livers. Is that safe to give them now and then?

I have about 200 two-week-old fry at the moment.

The females may try to eat the eggs.
Well, I haven't tried chicken liver. I don't know if it contains too much fat.

Also, is there any chance you could post a video of the fry? Many thanks.

PWMPOWER: Where did you castnet to get the fish? I am interested in catching a few for myself. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
