@OddPoPMusic I met Paul back in the Mr. Big days and he signed an autograph for me with that same message. I met him again not too long ago and mentioned that to him and he actually remembered the music store where he signed it. I thought he was just being nice at first but then he said "wasn't it called Tarpley music or something?" I was like, how the hell do you remember that!? It was like 1992!
I've met a lot of musicians and he as got to be one of the coolest/nicest I've ever met.
that last play through sounded like a slash solo sped up. except with paul gilbert playing it. his pinky looks like its the same size as my middle finger :S
......''There we go''..........he just blew my fucking mind and thats all he has to say for it........ he wasnt even trying,,,, is this guy fuckin human?
my add starts kickin in when i try to figure out stuff like this, one thing that helps me is to put the guitar down and go do something else for a few minutes then when i come back it seems a little easier because im not frustrated and it calms my mind down or something , try it the next time your trying to figure out something hard and getting frustrated , it helps . all you really need to become good is a lot of enthusiasm and good fucus and concentration skills and practice a lot
@acryinshame1 i usually start playing something else i already now, like you know the little descending lick marty does right after his first solo in hangar 18 right before dave and marty go back into the verses/chorus? like, i learned all the solos, and how to do the lick, i just couldnt to that at the right speed until i played something else for like 5 minutes. frustration much...i could perform the solos just not the lick...damn megadeth...I love them so much though:) and paul gilbert:)
i like that ,show you once real slow .then distract you with some other little riff that he amuses himself with.then blaze right through at lightning speed and go thats how you do it. lol lol
the funny thing is there are tons of guys who can play sort of like that but they don't know how they got there. He knows was every note is on every scale and all the theory behind it, like it's rote, like it rememberring your times tables or something. That's what sets this shredder apart from others. He actually can make music shredding because he understands what he's playing from a rudimentary level. that's an impressive dedication to the instrument. Just trying to use up my remaining charac
damn he can play as fast as people who speed up videos! lol if i shredded as fast as i could and sped up my video it still wouldnt be as fast nor clean as him
From about 1:50 on you lost me-great speed guitar player w/perfect technique! As othe people have stated-did you surgically implant about 1" more on your pinkie?
This is a great beginning for any newbie. Notice Gilbert keeps his hand loose?! Using patience and a metronome will result in excellence. It is not hard to figure this out. Playing at his speed is not won in a few weeks! Repetitive motion can be a problem for some...stay loose and stretch, & use isometric hand strengthener exercise; squeeze pinky & thumb, then squeeze against all the others. Your technique will become awesome with patience. How bad do you want this ability?
i agree. my problem is, mainly when im excercising, i want to just go off and play actual music. so i just have to get the discipline down for myself.
its funny how he is doing the excersize and all of a sudden had a kamehaha on the fretboard...lol...i was almost following it until he went plaid on me...lol..(spaceballs reference)
I think Paul is the best guitarist out of all those you mentioned, but he is definately not the fastest. Not that that really matters, but Batio is truly the fastest alive by far when he wants to be. I think Shawn Lane was probably faster though.
That's not really fair. How come I can do the ascending part easy (because I've been following PG's lessons for years now), but I can't seem to do the descending part when it follows the same pattern? Any advice?
Yeah, like the others said practicing more may help, but maybe you should concentrate on hammerons and pulloffs more, that helped me a lot. Try to have your index finger on the string before the pulloff, and really concentrate on not picking everything.
I don't see how he's a dick. A pentatonic scale is probably the most basic scale on guitar. Obviously this lesson isn't for beginners. Also, he goes through the whole thing step by step relatively slowly. If he was a dick, he wouldn't have showed you how to do it slowly first.

Paul needs to raise his action. It's so much fret buzz. I know he wants it low for speed, but tone comes first! BTW, these licks ain't too hard, if you've been practicing hard for a couple years. OTOH, check out Eric Johnson He does the fast pentatonics!
