Yes! I remember"Capt.Allen"Swift..who was the first host/performer of WPIX TV Ch.11 NYC's"Popeye Show"..he mc'd the program weekday evenings from 1956 to 1960.
I had the privilige of meeting the Captain at a Giants Game at the Meadowlands, while walking to my seat. Old and bent, I couldn't stop myself from thanking him for helping me grow up. Suddenly everyone recognized him, and we all did a cheer for Captain Jack. Three bells, all is well !
Who teaches the kids today these kiinds of lessons? No wonder we grew up pretty good, our parents had help from the likes of Captain Jack and Officer Joe.
My friend, you just brought memories back to my heart and tears to my eyes with this..I remember the reruns of Captain Jack and the kids' shows in the early 70's when I was very little, as well as Captain Jack's holiday bumpers he did for WPIX. Thank you for that, from the bottom of my heart.
Popeye, The Little Rascals, Bozo, they're all still with me to this day.
Also, I LOVED Chiller Theatre (the Hand) and WNEW 5's Creature Features! Monster movies ruled!
Claude Kirchner didn't host "Super Circus"in 1956..he and the Chicago,Ill. cast left the show in December,1955 and they were replaced by Jerry Collona,Jerry Bergen,Sandy Wirth and Will B.Able Mr.Kirchner moved to NYC in 1956 and he began hosting"Terry Tunes Circus"on WOR TV Ch.9.
@TheStanbabe I think my wording my have mislead you into thinking i said we watched Capt. Jack from the 1950,S into the late 60's. if you check it , kids born in the 1950's , watched him into the late 1960's . I can remember as far back as watching probably the last year of Super Circus , 1956 , with Claude Kirchner . Crusader Rabbit, Ruff and Reddy, Spunky and Tadpole, Colonel Bleep . Sorry for my confusing wording.
YEP, Capt Jack, was on for years, kids born in the 1950's watched him all the way into the late 1960's ,and every St.patty's day he hosted for years. I think i watched his last St Patricks day Parade, his retirement from hosting the Parade, he had his family with him, marching in the parade. They dont make them like that anymore, We kids respected him and his uniform, just like Officer Joe Bolton. And Thank you , Capt Jack.. He's in heaven, the part over Ireland im sure.
I remember one St. Patrick's Day a group of policemen paraded by where Jack was doing the Broadcast and started yelling..........Jack! Jack! Jack!. And The Captain got teary over the salute by New York's finest. Happy Saint Patrick's day Captain where ever you are.
Good ole Capt Jack! i looked forward to him doing the St. Patty's day parade every year, and at the end , he would always say.." May you be in heaven one hour before the devil knows your dead" then put his microphone down and proudly join in the parade...
Dear ParkWood,I hope that you don't mind my asking this query?
but..where did you get the audio aircheck of "Capt.Jack"McCarthy doing that little info segment about the importance of"The Buddy System"on WPIX TV Ch.11 NYC's"Popeye Show"?
I was lucky enough to meet "Capt.Jack"and he was a wonderful gentleman..he was also the last of NYC's really caring and talented kids tv hosts.NYC kids tv would never be fun again..until"The DJ Kat Show"and "Steampipe Alley"came on the air a decade later.

Dear 1952 Kid,
"Capt.Jack"McCarthy didn't host"The Popeye Show"..until Monday September 26,1960..You're mistaking"Capt.Allen"Swift(Who mc'd"The Popeye Show" weekday
evenings)and"Capt.Ray"Heatherton..who hosted the program Weekend evenings
in the late 1950's with"Capt.Jack"McCarthy.
