I met Maj Richard Winters about 10 years ago, you cant help but feel honored. he was a very humble gentleman and it was a priviledge to talk to him, rest in peace sir.
Couldn't help but get teary eyed on this one. Such a brave and humble man. It's a shame that he wasn't awarded the medal of honor even though he rightfully deserve it.
As surely as the Major and his men were heroes, there are men of his equal in our military today. I'm sure that Major Winters would say, "Even better!"
This man was always one of my heroes, and is my personal role model. I recently enlisted, inspired greatly by him. I've read his book numerous times. It is an honor to live in his, and enlist from his hometown. 11x Infantry Recruit, Fort Benning, GA, February 14, 2012. Hooah Major Winters. And of course, Currahee!
You are my biggest inspiration. Your incredible stories displays the brutality, reality & disparity of the battlefield & the significant sacrifices you embarked. For your efforts, I'll like to thankyou for such remarkable will, perseverance & courage throughout the war. As consequence for your extraordinary exertions & endeavors, we now & future generations to come live in liberty & freedom amongst each others & for that I salute you! Currahee!
I watch this interview every Veterans Day and Memorial Day. I feel it summarizes servicemen and women, past and present who have helped keep us free and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Thank a vet or a service member for keeping you safe in this country.
I just learned of Major Dick Winters' death maybe five minutes ago and i always knew that i'd get teary-eyed. We all watched "Band of Brothers" and i guess we all felt the same about this man: he was a great, extremely competent leader and yet, a very, very humble man. Gentlemen like him should be idols for other people. I'm sure he was a great person although i never met him personally. R.I.P. and CUR-RA-HEEEE!!! From Germany
Just finished reading his memoir, he is the most deserving of a medal of honor, why it escaped him is mind boggling, he will always be my hero and a role model to me. I wish i had got to talk to him as me being some what of a historian/collector myself. If you haven't read his memoirs read them, and you'll really realize like i did what these men and men of other wars went through, it is eye opening. Godspeed Major Winters
I can't here this, cause now he is dead. I feel especially bad for the rest of easy who had to hear about his death. I just can't listen; or I will cry.
i would make joke abaut the 4 dislikes but they can go play some halo or killzone because without those men and women wee would be hitlers slaves, and no iphones, ipads, macbooks, computers,t.v,videogames, consoles etc.
i would make joke abaut the 4 dislikes but they can go play some halo or killzone because without those men and women wee would be hitlers slaves, and no iphones, ipads, macbooks, computers,t.v,videogames, consoles etc.
The most memorable scene in the series is when he took a train to Paris and checked in to a hotel to have a warm shower. Your unselfish heroism and leadership of war will never be forgotten. The war was won cos of people like you. May you rest in peace in the hands of God.
Everytime I hear these words it makes me cry as the grief after those he's lost at the war is so visible and so piercing on that face.
RIP on behalf of every nation because it trully does not matter where we're from when it comes to being a good man. I wish I could to talk him and experience the wisdom he carried his entire life.
After watching "band of brothers", i bought his biography. Dick Winters was a strong, good person. i'm sure that the young soldiers respected him for his fairness. he was a real "brother"! i wished that modern managers and leaders would work with the strategy of Dick Winters: a combination of competence, emotional intelligence and heart!
ATTENTION TO ORDERS: Major Dick Winters, by order of your fallen brethren you are hereby awarded an immortal place in the memories of the people of the world. For your selfless actions that resulted in millions of lives being saved in Europe. For getting 120 men through hell and back. And for being one of the best role models today. We Salute You.
How can anyone dislike this? This man was one of the finest men ever to walk the earth. To fight with such courage on foreign shores in the name of freedom and justice is a godly thing to do. God bless him, and god bless all his brothers who fell all those years ago.
My prayers go out to the family. They were greatly blessed to have such a man in their lives. May GOD bless you at this time of sorrow. Thank you Major Winters for your service to man kind.
Its pathetic what this country glorifies today (American idol, Lady GaGa, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, the latest hollywood trend or the newest cell phones and gadjets) I think everyone should stop and think about where we came from. Its a sad fact that there aren't many of these men left alive today. God Bless them all and always remember whats important in live.
I agree with what your saying but its not the country who glorifies them, its just the uneducated idiots. Many people including myself have a massive ammount of respect for all the soldiers who fought in both World Wars for their country.
Although it is a shame that 'High profile' people such as Jusin Bieber and others get so much money/recognition when there's men who risked their lives for their countries in some cases twice! and dont have the money to pay for simple things such as heating
@AdoreYouInAshXI I couldn't agree with you more. This generation of Americans certainly wouldn't come close to that "Greatest Generation". Reality tv watching, materialistic, self centered ego-driven liberals. I was born way too late. I would have preferred to live (and even die) back in those days. That was the America I would like to have lived in. Not what we have today.
@AdoreYouInAshXI God Bless you for not be caught up in the latest gadgets and for taking time and realizing this! You are right, we will never forget and we should always remember whats important in life
@AdoreYouInAshXI We've dumbed down our history teachings, fallen victim to PC and moral relativist crap in our classrooms and abdicated parental responsibility...and that's the result; a young generation that knows nothing of the sacrifice that came before it or how to tell good from evil or even right from wrong. Values are screwed up, the old is forgotten and the same mistakes are bound to be repeated.
"We will never forget" is right; we (few) should be ashamed if we did.
@AdoreYouInAshXI Can you think of anybody in this day and age even a little bit like him? Perhaps a few, but not many. I wish people were more like him and cared more, instead of only caring about hollywood and these stupid celebrities like you said. R.I.P. Dick Winters, You are loved and will never be forgotten by any soldier that ever served under you, I would follow you into hell.
"Dear lord, thank you for saving me through D Day and if I live through the war I hope to go home and find a quiet peace of land somewhere and have peace and quiet for the rest of my life. I'm proud of the fact I did exactly that." Richard Winters
He's never going to be forgotten. And when I die I hope to be near him and his company of heros, that would be the heaven.
I just read this news on the Internet. I am deeply grateful that these men have given so much for mankind, some - too many - even making the ultimate sacrifice. Germany, Europe and the world owes so much to so few. Rest in peace. Regards from Germany
Dick Winters is wrong. You were a hero! I salute you. Thank you....from the UK. We owe you and your comrades a deep debt of gratitude. Your bravery is matched only by your modesty. Rest In Pease SIr.
Being a grown man I do not show emotion easy, when I heard of Major winters passing I stopped what I was doing because of the tear running down my face. America lost its silent hero as well as another of a generation that unfortunately we will never see again. My grandfather told me many stories and had nothing but modest humble words to share of you. You are a hero to many and will always be remembered. God Bless you Richard, and may you now be in peace.
RIP Major Winters ,You and your fellas did so much for my country's freedom .I'll always been faithfull ,I'm French and so sad ! It's like loosing a great friend .You'll always be in our minds .A true hero !!
Maj. Winters represented the highest values in a human being. His qualities made him a great leader of men. His humility added to his greatness. His example will doubtless have inspired many others to try to emulate him & to lead their lives in the exemplary way that he did. An enormouse debt of gratitude also goes to Stephen Ambrose who told his story, Stephen Spielberg & Tom Hanks who gave us the greatest retelling of a war story that has ever been made and HBO for broadcasting it.
Later in the war, one of Mr. Winters's soldiers, Floyd Talbert, wrote a letter to the officer from a hospital in Indiana expressing gratitude for his loyalty and leadership.
"You are loved and will never be forgotten by any soldier that ever served under you," Talbert wrote to Mr. Winters in 1945. "I would follow you into hell."
If that doesn't describe this man's bravery & excellence, nothing does
I been balling my eyes out all morning since I heard the news. I'm going to Fort Benning
for basic, AIT, and basic airborne training. Already passed the Army MEPS for it with flying colors. He shall live with me in body and mind when I go to Afghanistan.
So sad to hear the news today. What a great great humble man who did extraordinary things so we could lives the life most of us live today. Possibly the last great righteous war. RIP Maj Winters.
Rest In Peace Major Winters. A truly great man that will be very sadly missed. A true hero that will never be forgotten. It is our generations job to keep the memories alive. One day there will not be any veterans left and it is up to us to pass on the story of what these brave men did to future generations so that people like Major Winters will never be forgotten.
Sad day - We've lost a hero, although he wouldn't admit to being one. Many young men - and older ones too - would do well to aspire, not so much to his combat bravery (let's hope we're spared such a challenge), but rather to his unassuming nature and his ability to hold himself to a high moral standard without judging the failings of others.
This man was a great man, not a moviehero or a Hollywood-hero, he was an true hero. The world is going to miss this man, I wish more people can be like Winters - Being true heroes. Winters and the rest of all men who fought in ww2, are my heroes, I think I speak for a lot of people now. The world salutes You, Major Richard Winters!
@MrErasmie well said and very true.....This man even the though of him gives me goosebumps, only found out yesterday that he had passed away....very sad ....The love he had for his men and the respect they had for him is beautiful..Major Winters is more than a hero to me i did get a chance 2 yrs ago to write major Winters a letter...he replied back to me thanking me for my comments towards him , very humble man...God im going to miss him.!
After Band of Brothers came out, I located Maj. Winters at his home in Pennsylvania and we wrote one another several times. He was a gentleman in our correspndence just as he was in the book and mini-series. Rest in peace, Sir.
Please support my film on a world war 2 hero.. go to kickstarter d o t com and type WW2 on the search box thanks... :)

Thumbs up if you were shocked to hear that he died.

From the United Kingdom, thankyou for your help in defeting the enemy during the second world war. From one great nation to another.
