I was reading about this in the Internet Movie Database forum for this, in "Did Dickie Mean to Kill Ripley" [I post as gcarras, if you're thinkng of looking me up in the IMDB forums and want to see my psots.), and there was a link to this.
Indeed a beautiful and sensitive trailer, yet it diminishes the depth of Ripley's complex personality accentuating the gay dimension only, while the main fascination of the film lies in a much wider deep and disturbing identity crisis...."I always thought it was better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody" - remember?
Law was born to play Dickie and the boat confrontation was tension at its best. Ok,they turned a stonecold psycho into a man with passion n love but on the plus side, they turned a plot device like Dickie, a somewhat bland character in the book, into vain, and a touch sociopath who has balls to say what he feels n isn´t just a dumb lamb being led to the slaughter. Calculated planned murder in the novel turned into halfaccident/halfself defense which was pussy but the confrontation added so much.
@LDN235 The song it's right at the main titles sequence of the film, just when Matt Damon appears playing the piano. Title: Lullaby for Cain by Sinead O'Connor.
@excebolla You're right. Messed up the production year. I'm going to change it. And I agree, the film was poorly represented as the oscars. To me it's far better than "The English Patient"
@excebolla I was mesmerized by this Movie. Although you're supposed to hate him for everything he does, he can't help but feel sorry for him. He had no Family, No Real Friends, he lived in a Basement Apartment. Hey did you guys know that Patricia Highsmith also wrote The Price Of Salt under the "Alternative" Name Claire Morgan which became one of the First Lesbian Pulp Fiction Novels. Even though he's a SOB, he's so charming, and devious that you can't help but be drawn to him.
@laminage Totally agreed! That's the beauty of Tom Ripley, it's like a fallen angel who can't help to be what he is. Matt Damon't performance and the masterful direction of mr. Anthony Minguella enhances all that contradictions who made a bigger than life character.

This movie is not from 1997, but from 1999. It was poorly represented at the oscars. Such a wonderful film
