the ending was to signify that he had joined his family in the heaven's. If it had ended with him alive he would have had to walk the world without his loved ones, which means pain. Not many Directors wanna finish on that note. I would have finished this movie exactly the way it has ended. He's back with he's loved ones where he belongs......He gave his life for a free Rome, And to be freed from his pain.

Intersting, though this film's afterlife portrayal is slightly inconsistent. The Roman's didn't believe the afterlife was the same as Earth, as a parallel universe type afterlife. It was much different, with different levels for those worthy. Major war heroes and legends were reserved a special place in Heaven with the Gods, where they lived in complete luxury, with the chance to be reincarnated up to four times. Maximus would have been there, with his family.

Well if you think about it the Roman army was made up of a lot of different cultures, and Maximus was Spanish, his view of the after life didn't have to be that of the Romans.

Actualy it was roman Elysium is part of Greco-Roman Mythology but is true Rome had many cultures and religions and Maximus was Hispanic-Roman not Spanish Spain didnt exist
