@raindog951 HAHAHA!!!! It does look like he's working on some Guinness record for world's smallest waist or something. I think he just forgot his guitar strap and found some electrical tape and old inner tubes and made do . . .
Prescott's a sloppy drummer and always has been. I like his sound for organic, grungy sounding bands like Mission of Burma and Volcano Suns, but if Big Black had to have a live drummer, I'd prefer someone precise and machine-like, such as Bill Reiflin or Ted Parsons. Still I like this video just for the genre-bending value. Must have been a real mind-fuck for the lucky audience.
@WilliamDeCntng is far from a moron. he's actually extremely intelligent, but being a cancer, he is a moody, blunt and harsh fucker. a martyr. i think its awesome but i can see how many wouldn't like him... he's one of the only musicians that took the music industry and fucked it in the ass instead of the other way around.. they couldn't touch him. no one ever told him what to do and how to do it.. how many other musicians can honestly say that? yeah... you're very wrong about him.
@chillichomper It's not wanky linear, like Halfords music. Judging by your faves etc, you like very formulaic, easily comprehensible, conventionally structured music. So yeah, one would think a person with that mindset wouldn't get it or that it "sounds bad".
Incredible seeing Big Black with a human drummer! Even more incredible seeing Peter Prescott being that drummer!!! The best footage I've seen on YouTube for many months!
Why do anorexic people look cooler playing angry music? Albini and Justin Broadrick of Godflesh, and Kurt Cobain near the very end. It makes everything seem more desperate.
I was gonna say..what is up with the live drums! I see they took his crashes away. Good job. Keep it simple beat heads! :D Not the best group, but interesting band. Albini was very talented at what he does now.
@HamburgerMartyr Prescott's a great drummer, and I reckon it must've sounded miles better in the room than it does on film, but the ugly industrial thud of the drum machine is missing. It's part of what makes the Big Black sound the Big Black sound.
The reason why the band's drum machine was replaced with Peter Prescott was because Dave Riley(bass player) drunkenly smashed Roland, Albini wanted to strangle him that night.
Definitely a rarity, and it still sounds pretty damn good, considering. Good drummers are like that, too bad there aren't many around, probably a main reason BB used Roland. Thanks for sharing!!
the reason for peter being there is because dave smashed roland while drunk before the show. prescott really didn't know the songs (watch durango giving subtle hints of trying to feel the beat) so the show wasn't really up to par. regardless, fantastic viewing!
I'm the person who shot this footage, and no, you are incorrect. They used the drum machine for the entire show until it malfunctioned, at which point they came back out and played this song with Prescott. I have the entire rest of the show on my original video I shot.
Looks like I stand corrected! In Azerrad's book, he mentions that there was a show were Riley did smash Roland. Looks like it could've been a different night, or (and maybe more likely), Azerrad got some facts wrong. Still a pleasure to watch!
I was at this show too. A Homestead showcase. I was and am a bigger Volcano Suns fan. Any chance anyone has their set from this night or any Volcano Suns?
awsome video. Wasn't even born when this was filmed. But i got to see Shellac here in Ireland last week. Good to hear that good music is coming across the pond and into the new generation right?
I think this was taped a few years' short of a decade before I was born.
No. I wasn't there. Obviously, in order for this music to survive and change more lives and influence music of the future, it has to be appreciated by people who weren't there.
But my God, I'd give all my limbs just to have been there, sweating and jumping and gazing up at Steve, Sant and Dave (and Peter); being deafened by this audible bliss.
Steve Albini may have been thin, but he will probably outlive many of the overweight people in America.

One of the fills is off, but that is a good drummer.
I prefer a drummer unless there's a problem with floating tempo and rushing. Just like a comic with bad timing it ruins performances.

Good. I hate drum machines, only reason it's pretty cool for big black is because they did it on purpose to make that silly, 80's sound.
Holy shit look at Steve back then
And damn, sounds even more abrasive and noisy live.
