    I LIKED YOU RUSSIA

  • Arrow to the Beiber lightsaber like bar sent me here thumbs up THUMBS UP THUMBS UUUUUP!

  • "The only winning move is not to play" - Joshua

"PLAY THE GAME" 1-50 INF REGT

  • That would be an awesome game to play. What is that? 90 inch flat screen tvs?

  • I'm in a conversation with cleverbot he says he has a son named joshua...

  • I don't understand pretty well the far east strategy :/ it´s weird

  • "How about a game of chess"

  • R.I.P. John Wood.

  • i wonder if someone is crazy enought to write down all simulation name that appear on that scene

  • @athomicritics Yeah, sadly I did, about 25 years ago....FML

  • @Thetrumanunit damn did you watch the scene frame by frame ? because it so fast and if you have writing it down could you send me a pm with the names of the simulations that would be great

  • @athomicritics Sorry, it was a long time ago - I did it so I could include the names in a ZX Spectrum game I wrote.....I rented the VCR tape and paused it to copy the names onto paper. Over. And Over. And Over :)

  • i don't know why but i thought all strategies were sex positions

  • Even if the US successfully nuke Moscow and eliminates the upper echelons of the Russian government, the Russians has the Dead Hand (also known as Perimeter) which is designed to launch nuke in an event that Moscow is nuked and the upper echelon of the Russian military and government wiped out...

  • The only winning move is not to play.

The Game. You just lost it.

(Now we know where its origins are from)

  • the only winning move to redirect the screen to a porn site and have a jerk-off-fest.

  • Heres my strategy.

USA launch single nuke at Justin Bieber

USSR impressed by the USA's sensibility

USA and USSR rule the world in happiness and without bad singing

  • @LiverP00LFTW1 USA changes target to rebecca black instead...

  • @LiverP00LFTW1 like how you call yourself "LiverP00lFTW1" and yet you think america can be world dominant?

so your age is about 15 im guessing

  • this movie is my all time favourite

  • See - "11 Weirdest Imaginary Wars Dreamed Up By the Computer in WarGames"

"DENMARK MASSIVE - Call me crazy, but if there's going to be a "Global Thermonuclear War" that results in complete extinction, I just don't think the epicenter is going to be Denmark. Last time I checked the world's superpowers aren't fighting over Legos."

  • The U.S. First Strike started with a single missile launched by accident. The Democrats wanted to self-destruct it, but the Republicans in Congress filibustered until it was too late.

  • Middle East Offensive? It sure is!

  • Hey, who wants some Sudan Surprise? I made it special!

    BEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

  • man sometimes i think my country is stupid, i have an idea U.S EMP defensive airburst,or ICBM EMP warhead

  • 0:40 most of Brazil,Madagascar,Greenland, and New Guinea escape destruction.

So would they be the winners in that simulation run?

  • I'm surprised that everybody in the room didn't get seizures after seeing all the flashes

  • 4 People had seizures while watching this video.

  • Who really thinks that the cold war is over and we have avoided nuclear annihilation? NOT! There's still enough missiles to destroy the world at least twice, and what's worst now is that instead of just dealing with the Soviet Union, we have to deal with multiple countries, and now Pakistan and India. But, I loved this movie.

  • Goes straight to playing DEFCON...

  • fuck, when is this game coming out on atari?

  • Does anyone else wonder why in the U.S. First Strike scenario, the United States only launches one ICBM to start with, and in the U.S.S.R. first strike, the Soviet Union launches massively?

  • @nukewarfare2,

That always surprised me - I always figured that whichever side launched first, it would be a MASSIVE, full-scale strike. Thank goodness the leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union heeded Joshua's words - "The ONLY winning move is NOT TO PLAY."

  • @nukewarfare2 Simple. US believes in "surgical precision". All of our bombs are extremley precise to about a few KM. the USSR has a preference on "Strength in numbers" whch is true with Tsar bomba, AK-47's and other russian military weapons

  • @Globalnet626 But that doesn't explain why the U.S. First Strike started with a single ICBM. If it were a decapitation strike, it wouldn't be efficient. ICBMs take 25-30 minutes to reach the U.S.S.R. from the U.S. That gives them plenty of time to respond. And because Moscow is located far from shore, our SLBMs would take 15-20 minutes to reach the Kremlin. A decapitation strike needs to be very swift. NATO had Pershing MRBMs that could reach Moscow in 6-8 minutes, so that would make more sense.

  • @Globalnet626 And, anyway, this was 1983, so the Soviets had increased their ICBM/SLBM accuracies greatly. The SS-18s had what? A C.E.P. of 350 meters? I'd say that's fairly accurate for ten 500-kiloton MIRV warheads.

  • How much fun would it have been to come up with all the strategy names. "Mexican takeover" lol

  • CE1704TKS

  • Best Strategies: Mexican Takeover (he he he) Chad Alert. Middle East Offensive.

  • the should of just had a bucket of water and throw it on joshua

  • @pokamonmaster1997 The missiles would launch assuming loss of NORAD.

  • This is on google earth yeah what's the KML file?

    Please

  • Sound editing was on fire for this scene. Added some serious tension to our spines in the theaters.

  • WINNER: NONE

This movie was under rated. Profound statement if there ever was.

  • Best strategies

    1)Sudan Surprise

    2)Turkish Heavy

    3)Bangladesh Thrust

  • Are the lines drawn on the maps legitimate Great Circle lines between each pair of points?

  • sudan surprise :D

  • just unplug the goddamn thing!

  • OMG that is the most brilliant idea ever. Even I never thought of that!

  • If you would, the computer will fire the rockets though. That's said in the film.

  • I love this movie, saw it when I was little, no didn't check it out just cuz of the hottie in it :P

  • "how about a nice game of chess?"

  • 1:37 Mexican Takover, lol.

  • Rofl,

    NATO Decapatation

    Far East Surprise

  • good video , i seen it on the TV not so long time ago

  • LETS ALL GET LAID!!!!!

  • god i LOVE this movie!

i have a older vhs, a newer vhs version of it and i just got it brand new on dvd with bonus features!

  • how about a nice game of chess

  • I'd have loved if the Professor just said, 'NO! YOU'RE GROUNDED FOR NEARLY TERMINATING ALL HUMAN LIFE, MISTER!'

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, thats the entire point of MAD and why it exists.

  • MAD is relatively pointless after the cold war, now that non-state actors can get access to nukes or bioweapons.

  • is this the end of the movie? if it is, you just ruined it for me =(

  • They spend the entire movie trying to disable Joshua and stop him from initiating World War 3... Has no-one over there heard of Ctrl-Alt-Del?

  • It's not running on windows...

  • It was a joke...

  • and it didnt work

  • And I suppose CP/M has Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Oh wait, those keys aren't on the keyboard yet.

  • actually those keys were on the keyboard, at least on my Atari 400xl home computer.

they even released a game on it based after this movie called Computer War.

  • This is how to end it:

    C:\>exit_

    Are you sure? Y/N

  • Anyone ever notice how on "U.S. First Strike" only one missile is first launched at the USSR, but in "USSR First Strike" vitually all the missiles are launched in one-shot?

  • Probably a play on the tactic difference between US and Russia. US believes in "surgical" precision strike, while Russia believes in "Strength in numbers". This can be observed in their respective weapon designs, such as M-16 vs. AK-47, F-15 vs. Mig-29 etc.

That or Joshua just thinks he could take out Moscow in one shot and get away with it. :P

  • It's realistic. The first strike is actually Slim Pickens riding the bomb down like a bronco ;)

  • lol this is a great film it was on the TV Today

  • i watched it too lolz CHANNEL 4 FTW lolz

  • WHAT LOL!

dont say channel 4 in the uk....ive been trying to find the original for ages ... and it was on last week!

    ffs :(:L

  • It was on AMC several weeks ago

  • SUDAN SURPRISE AND ATLANTIC HEAVY sound like kick as strategies. Anyone else look at the board at the list of strategies. Which one stood out to you.

  • English Thrust.

  • The sad fact is that anyone with any intelligence would ban nukes, but anyone with any chutzpah would keep their nukes. The reason it's a losing strategy is because it's an American movie. Just listen to the song American Pie.... "Helter Skelter in a fallout shelter." The future is already known to some. The one unfortunate side effect to global thermonuclear war that prevents it is the fact that in every scenario Israel gets nuked, which is why it hasn't happened yet.

  • Yay someone who thinks.

  • Israel gets nuked, lol good thing we still have Israel.

  • I think the idea is that possessing these weapons ensures that they will never be used (Mutually Assured Destruction), but there are always chances that the system can fail.

  • Don't you think it's funny, that a computer can learn that nuclear war should be avoided at all costs and we can't?

  • The methods depend on the likely responses of the other nations. For example you can choose to nuke the central command base, or the launch sites themselves. Either way there is a likely response. If you could somehow nuke every single offensive capability before they could launch a retaliatory strike then you'd fire immediately. Of course knowing that you could, your opponent would nuke you to prevent this.

  • And this is how the world will end once computers can learn for there self's.

  • The world hasn't ended, the computer has realised what we do not - that you simply can't win a nuclear war. We still believe there is some way to 'win' and that you can have acceptable losses in the millions.

  • The cold war was so strategic. This was true, the only winning move was not to play.

  • controol alt deleeeette!!!

  • This is how to end it:

    C:\>exit_

    Are you sure? Y/N

  • One of the most important lessons in Game Theory.

  • Joshua gives probably the most profound statement on Nuclear Wwar.

"A strange game.... The only winning move is not to play."

  • Beat's HAL 9000's last words, as he gradually decends into robo-dumbness.

'DAIZEE DAIZEE TELL ME YOR LUV IS TROO. EYEM ARF CRAIZY ALL FOUR THA LUV OF UUU...'

  • @lordsmokeadoob420 And dating!

  • @lordsmokeadoob420 That's the point of the whole movie.

  • when Broderick was relevant

  • this game was tic tac toe

  • "How about a nice game of chess?"

how about ncie game of DEFCON: Everybody Dies, Joshua will overlaod and explode, sicne you can win nuclear war in that game :P

  • u gus know wargames 2 : the dead code justcame out??? ITS A FUCKING AWESOME MOVIE!!! its just as good as the orig !! u can watch it on ur computer if u have netflix

  • "How about a nice game of chess?"

I saw this movie earlier today. And its good for a movie from the 90's.

  • close 1983

  • Oh, okay. I didn't know really so I just guessed. But thanks for the correction :)

  • no problem i dont know the year for everything i just happen to know this one, also the movie "The Day After" in which an 'actual' nuclear exchange is depicted was on tv in 1983. 1983 had a lot of nuclear arms talk going on hence the films

  • I notice most of Greenland doesn't get hit during "all" simulations.

  • It's not worth hitting! :)

  • Plus most of it is uninhabited.

  • I still want to know wtf a Sudan Surprise is. Sounds like a Dirty Sanchez.

  • MY NAME IS JOSHUA

  • love it

  • i have see that film very cool but the computer is cooler

  • The WOPR voice always scared me as a kid... still kind of does.

  • get a bloody epileptic fit of those flashing lights man.

  • what would happen if the Blue Screen of Death appeared? O.o

  • the human race would be whipped from the face of this planet.

  • "a strange game" is a fragment, consider revising.

piece of shit, must be a windows 98 or something

  • More like Windows 83...xD

  • A strange game, the only winning move is not to play.

How about a nice game of chess?

    lol i luv that line

  • I loved this part of the movie!

  • those strategies wre so cool but it seemed that most of the missiles were comin' from Russia

  • Hint: Reagan Era!

  • holy shit, that part was like a seizure inducing mod of defcon

  • best movie of the 80's. norad had to change all their security after this film,as it exposed an actual weakness!!

  • so how many seizures do u think were caused by this scene? haha

  • Over 9000

  • Wat? 9000??!?!?!

  • thats no way that can be right!!!

  • holy shit the computer is right...the only way to win a nuke-ular war is to not start at all...damn i can't even imagine what would happen if that weretrue and they were actual missiles...there would be no youtube...no humans...ever..

  • It's possible to win a nuclear war, but the chances are slim. You would have to pull off an attack on an enemy without giving him a chance to strike back - the ultimate sneak attack.

This is where stealth bombers come in. Stealth bombers give the United States a huge advantage, as they (theoretically) can paralyze an enemy without him seeing it coming. But in practice, the US has only 20 B-2s and that is insufficient to launch a reliable preemptive strike. And what about Russian SSBNs?

  • Ergo, there is no way to win a nuclear war.

  • Pretty much. It's possible to win, but the chances are so slim, and the risk so horrific, that nobody wants to do it. It's like playing Russian roulette with five bullets loaded into 6 chambers.

  • like DannoHung said it is not possible 'cause there is no chance but only in DEFCON there's a way to win but they only measure how many are projected dead!

  • If you can disable an enemy's entire nuclear arsenal in one quick blow, then it's plausible to win a war. It is just extremely difficult to do so.

  • especially since the silos are shielded...with a saboteur on the inside it would be quite plausible however.

  • Nobody would win. Somebody may lose slightly less, but that's as good as it gets.

  • You can't load 5 bullets into 6 chambers!

  • What I mean is, 1 of the 6 chambers is empty. There are five bullets loaded into the gun.

  • Say you do somehow nuke whatever country you're fighting. Wouldn't other nations fight back in retaliation? What are you going to do, nuke the whole world?

  • This *may* be possible, but the scenario is highly unlikely.

If the Serbian Army can (and did) hit and destroy an F117 Stealth Bomber with an outdated SA-6 Gainful during the Bosnian Escalation, I happen to think an S-300 or S-400 which boasts over 250km in cruise attack range, and the ability to hit "stealth" technology, in the CIS- I scratch my head, considering the wreckage of it is on public display in a museum in Belegrade.

It's best to not try it to find out if we're right or not.

  • 1983 "War Games" then 1984 "Red Dawn" 1985 Rocky 4??? What happened to Global Thermo Nuclear Warfare and they had Rocky talk about "Everyone can change" at the end of the movie?? Love this movie but when Joshua was trying to find the lauch sequence - PEOPLE - how many characters are there in the alphabet and numbers are there .... did anyone notice that Joshua was just locking each individual character one by one??? If that was the case it should have got that launch code within a nanosecond??

  • We're talking the age of the apple //c, dude.

  • Not really, get your calendar straight:

    • Wargames was released in june '83.

    • The Apple //c was introduced in april '84.

But even at the time, Lightman's computer was a bit of a dinosaur: an IMSAI 8080, introduced in december '75. That acoustic coupler was just as obsolete, but it was used so non-nerds could see the computer/phone connection. That would be less obvious with a "pure" modem.

  • They used the IMSAI for a couple of reasons.

It looked cool had lots of blinking lights. Also they wanted it to look like he obtained a used computer or constructed it from old parts people threw out which would have been fairly realistic for a high school kid.

  • Ireland gets nuked....NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • it clearly doesn't liek Guinness

  • but...but...who doesnt like guiness...for gods sake whoooooooooooooo!!!!

  • lol i remember watchin this on new years eve on ITV3

  • yes,you won ww2,but why?i mean germany was in war since 1939 and the usa got in 1941,if the usa got in 1939,things would changed, and probably they lost

  • Why?

  • well, after 3 years of war....the army just imagine it if the usa had 6 years since the beggining..they probably lost.

  • One of the best movies EVER!!!!

  • Nobody wins in a war.

  • Tell that to the Germans.

  • Joshua has a cute personality.

    Reminds me of myself. lol

  • Hahahah, your funny. What are you, 10?

  • the ultimate gaming room

  • Why is it that in the U.S. first strike a single ICBM is launched by America, but in the U.S.S.R. first strike, a large salvo of ICBMs are launched? Surely the U.S. has a massive attack option available.

  • A great film!!!

  • According to Wikipedia, this part deals with Game Theory. Backward induction leads to the strategy of "Not to Play"?
