@Thetrumanunit damn did you watch the scene frame by frame ? because it so fast and if you have writing it down could you send me a pm with the names of the simulations that would be great
@athomicritics Sorry, it was a long time ago - I did it so I could include the names in a ZX Spectrum game I wrote.....I rented the VCR tape and paused it to copy the names onto paper. Over. And Over. And Over :)
Even if the US successfully nuke Moscow and eliminates the upper echelons of the Russian government, the Russians has the Dead Hand (also known as Perimeter) which is designed to launch nuke in an event that Moscow is nuked and the upper echelon of the Russian military and government wiped out...
See - "11 Weirdest Imaginary Wars Dreamed Up By the Computer in WarGames"
"DENMARK MASSIVE - Call me crazy, but if there's going to be a "Global Thermonuclear War" that results in complete extinction, I just don't think the epicenter is going to be Denmark. Last time I checked the world's superpowers aren't fighting over Legos."
The U.S. First Strike started with a single missile launched by accident. The Democrats wanted to self-destruct it, but the Republicans in Congress filibustered until it was too late.
Who really thinks that the cold war is over and we have avoided nuclear annihilation? NOT! There's still enough missiles to destroy the world at least twice, and what's worst now is that instead of just dealing with the Soviet Union, we have to deal with multiple countries, and now Pakistan and India. But, I loved this movie.
Does anyone else wonder why in the U.S. First Strike scenario, the United States only launches one ICBM to start with, and in the U.S.S.R. first strike, the Soviet Union launches massively?
That always surprised me - I always figured that whichever side launched first, it would be a MASSIVE, full-scale strike. Thank goodness the leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union heeded Joshua's words - "The ONLY winning move is NOT TO PLAY."
@nukewarfare2 Simple. US believes in "surgical precision". All of our bombs are extremley precise to about a few KM. the USSR has a preference on "Strength in numbers" whch is true with Tsar bomba, AK-47's and other russian military weapons
@Globalnet626 But that doesn't explain why the U.S. First Strike started with a single ICBM. If it were a decapitation strike, it wouldn't be efficient. ICBMs take 25-30 minutes to reach the U.S.S.R. from the U.S. That gives them plenty of time to respond. And because Moscow is located far from shore, our SLBMs would take 15-20 minutes to reach the Kremlin. A decapitation strike needs to be very swift. NATO had Pershing MRBMs that could reach Moscow in 6-8 minutes, so that would make more sense.
@Globalnet626 And, anyway, this was 1983, so the Soviets had increased their ICBM/SLBM accuracies greatly. The SS-18s had what? A C.E.P. of 350 meters? I'd say that's fairly accurate for ten 500-kiloton MIRV warheads.
Anyone ever notice how on "U.S. First Strike" only one missile is first launched at the USSR, but in "USSR First Strike" vitually all the missiles are launched in one-shot?
Probably a play on the tactic difference between US and Russia. US believes in "surgical" precision strike, while Russia believes in "Strength in numbers". This can be observed in their respective weapon designs, such as M-16 vs. AK-47, F-15 vs. Mig-29 etc.
That or Joshua just thinks he could take out Moscow in one shot and get away with it. :P
The sad fact is that anyone with any intelligence would ban nukes, but anyone with any chutzpah would keep their nukes. The reason it's a losing strategy is because it's an American movie. Just listen to the song American Pie.... "Helter Skelter in a fallout shelter." The future is already known to some. The one unfortunate side effect to global thermonuclear war that prevents it is the fact that in every scenario Israel gets nuked, which is why it hasn't happened yet.
I think the idea is that possessing these weapons ensures that they will never be used (Mutually Assured Destruction), but there are always chances that the system can fail.
The methods depend on the likely responses of the other nations. For example you can choose to nuke the central command base, or the launch sites themselves. Either way there is a likely response. If you could somehow nuke every single offensive capability before they could launch a retaliatory strike then you'd fire immediately. Of course knowing that you could, your opponent would nuke you to prevent this.
The world hasn't ended, the computer has realised what we do not - that you simply can't win a nuclear war. We still believe there is some way to 'win' and that you can have acceptable losses in the millions.

Why is it that in the U.S. first strike a single ICBM is launched by America, but in the U.S.S.R. first strike, a large salvo of ICBMs are launched? Surely the U.S. has a massive attack option available.
