simply said yes, not hitting hi hat enough. not enough means in this case hitting too slowly with only 8th notes which is easy and sounds crap.with playing 16th notes you double your speed on hi hat or ride (but you stay still on the same beat speed). check out AT THE GATES "Slaughter of the soul" album which is full of killer 16th notes thrash beats played fuckin fast. and if you can get the good studio sound its the best beat you can play in metal ! no fuckin double bass beats...

Umm......It can be both I guess. 8th notes will be easier for you....But if you practice you'll get up to 16th.....Then that will build up your stamina. It'll just improve your speed etc. But it can be both. I rather 16th notes even though it is harder.
