AFAIK this has never been sung better. Emma Kirkby sings this not only beautifully but with appropriate humor. Too many soloists render the Coffee Cantata as if it were a sacred cantata. That's esp. wrong here, where the virginal Liesgen delivers some accidentally (?) sly comments, e.g. that her father should find her a man "eh' ich noch zu Bette geh'" ("before I go to bed again"). In this performance all the soloists help us enjoy both the music and comedy. The orchestra is also unsurpassed.
I think that in this case her voice suits the one of a very young girl juxtaposed to the bass one of her father's... In my humble opinion Bach's music needs clear and agile voice, harmony is so complex that a redundant voice would exceed.
you are right =) but I think the opera is another art, maybe imposible for the genius of bach... the art opera is always of humanity, and is not of god =)
No the reason why Bach wrote no Opera in contrast to his saxonian landsman Händel is more simple. None of the towns in which he worked had an opera house. Hamburg was the first town in Germany when Händel visited it in1709.
mmm alone I think, the BEST Bach interpret is Magdalena Kozenà for technique, voice and art... only she is capable of understand very well the Bach music
Ein süßer Sopran - bezaubernd! Wer ist diese herausragende Sängerin? Entzückend! Und der große BACH konnte auch weltliche Kantaten komponieren - und wie ...

I want to hear it with Magdalena but by the way but unfortunately she is a mezzo-soprano.
I like Emma Kirkby, not so much

Don't really like the soprano. Magdalena Kozena is no comparison. Kirkby's voice is thin as compared to Kozena's thick mellifluous voice. :)

Why did he wrote this? Thought cantatas where more of a religious thing.

Is a Kantate "profana", not religious... In early XVIII° century coffee was trendy in Europe.

Bach wrote no operas? This cantata can really performed as a little funny opera! BTW the soprano is awesome.

Magdalena Kozenà its a great singer too.
I love her work in the St Matthew Passion of Paul McCreesh.
But, I dont know yet her singer work about to the "coffee" cantata.

@Mozartharmony I prefer Eli Hammeling on this performance

Nice--this is the one with the harpsichord obligato, which I once had the fun of sight-reading with a full orchestra!
I believe this is the Academy of Ancient Music, with Emma Kirkby and David Thomas. Just a guess. . .

@Flautenist Es gibt so wie so keine Unterschiedung zwischen weltliche und religiöse, musikalicherweise. Nur der Text macht die Unterschiedung!
