In the cannon drawings she's just a small chick ( ever known a lady who stopped growing at about 4'8"? ) whereas Ichigo is Tall, wide in the shoulders, and of european decent. I think it's meant to be a yin/yang kind of contrast, as well as reinforce how well they go together.
