I actually think we should raise the retirement age eventually. We might have a surplus now but lots of baby boomers haven't retired yet and our birthrate seems to be staying flat. With all this tax cuts, is there any tax left to cut? Don't conservatives even read books by capitalist economist? There's an elitist economist who said that the rich should only pay the workers just enough so they could survive and keep the rest for themselves, that's not including health care. As far as he cares the poor could go sick and die, and the rich thought it was a good idea.
Economists already predicted this would happen decades ago and it worked until the progressives came in.

What Cenk isn't factoring in is the baby boom generation. When they retire, that is when we will have serious problems with SS. There wont be enough people paying in to cover the SS expense in the near future. I think anyone born after 2010 should receive SS at 70 years old. Just so we can better manage it. Or we can cut military defense (but we know thats not going to happen). Sorry Cenk I don't agree with you this time. But welcome back

The rest of the federal budget. Because the interest payments for Social Security are paid for by the rest of the federal budget. In other words, it's running a surplus because the Social Security trust fund is so large, and the interest payments on that fund are paid directly by tax payer money. As the Social Security trust fund increases and ages, more and more money has to be sent to it to pay the interest.

No. 65 is the usual retirement age. People are still free to work pass that age if they want to (or in many cases, NEED to).

How you ask. It discourages (less profitable) for large businesses to buy out small businesses and ship your jobs China and elsewhere.
Sure Capital Gains Tax will slow small business growth, but growth at the expense of the midlle class is NOT growth.

Social Security is in great shape. Those funds were never invested in the same idiotic things the Fed wastes money on. The Repubs only want to lie about it because they want to steal from it. Just like they lied about Iraq to steal oil from it. SS surplus will run out 2037? Nope, the runout is actually closer to 2042, according to the actual numbers dealing with recent trends. Are things going to change? Yes, but only for the better. So decades from now SS will be in even BETTER shape!

I actually think we should raise the retirement age eventually. We might have a surplus now but lots of baby boomers haven't retired yet and our birthrate seems to be staying flat. Eventually we'll have to address it. I'm 20, and I worry if we don't do some cuts now, there will be much more drastic cuts by the time I am eligible to receive Social Security.
