@Rydek133 im not beeing disrespectful, if i sound like that i'm sorry. I respect the time these guys put in so i can watch them on Sundays. And i now understan that this is a form of technique based on football. Because most of the time ppl bring the weight down and hold it for one second, but in football the opponent is not gonna wait 1 second for you before he tries to get to the QB. I now see why they are doing it different :)
this video is bullcrap. he weighs 136kg and he is bench pressing 100kg (-36kg bodyweight) for 50 reps... I weigh 80kg, now if I take -36kg off my weight thats 44kg......... I can do probably 100 reps with that weight. so in short, I'm twice as strong as this overpaid player. Not impressed at all. My one rep max is 175kg @ 80kg. Put that on your little playing field.
as a bear fan i hope he continues to improve but all this video does is confirm that weight room strength does not translate on the field to football strength most times. pause at 1:29 and look at that list ....how many of those guys are pro bowlers or household names? none. Reggie white was the strongest "on field" D linemen i ever saw
225 is probably an appropriate weight to test skill position players but for lineman they should be tested at least 315. Whats the point of seeing how many times a 350 pound guy can lift 225 pounds.
@lothario427 point taken but he weighs 300, i think they keep the weight 225 as a strength measure for smaller players and probably a good measure of muscular endurance for the big guys
Watch Jacko Gill's videos up on youtube, he max benches 192kg (423lb) and is only 16 YEARS OLD! He's a shot putter from New Zealand and just qualified for the London Olympics. BEAST!
I believe he said in an interview that he wasnt 100% at the combine, because he was recovering from knee surgery. He said at 100% he could have pulled off 54-55 reps. Crazy strength.
@GoMongolBench225 That is not the same at all. 49 reps of 225 would give him a max upwards of at least 500 lbs, we'll say 525ish conservatively. that means he can bench 225 more lbs than his bodyweight. can you bench 425? not to bore you with physiological bs but there are many reasons why benching 125 for 40 is not the same as 225 for 40, regardless of weight. you can't just take 75 lbs of your bw and say it's the same.
@13148HSRC I agree with you? How is benching 125 lbs for 40 reps impressive or anything similar? Size factors little into this.
Also, he's probably much higher than 500 lbs, because this only demonstrates power and endurance, not pure strength. For instance, Larry Allen bench presses 700 lbs, yet he only managed to get to around 42 reps of 225 lbs?
@blueSa09 He says that he is Tongan and that he grew up playing rugby in Tonga so I don't think Samoan is what he claims. Samoan or not he claims Tongan.
I do agree jonah lomu would eat this record in his prime... however poly's are beast's you want protein and u want to know the secret? ready EAT HORSE!
I don't get how this is the record when back in 1999 DT Justin Ernest from Eastern Kentucky did 51 reps. Somebody pease explain this to me. I know at 1:31 it says since 2000 but people have to stop saying it broke the recordfor the NFL combine. It did not break the record.
There's probably a lot of Polynesians who could do this. Manu Tuilagi in Rugby is only 220lbs and repped 200lb x 40 not so long ago as a 19 year old. Paea has close to 100lb on him.
@z0mgrugbyreturns Paea is clearly strong, but don't be fooled into believing that this test represents strength specifically; It's combination of strength and endurance. Rugby will have big guys with more endurance, and football will have have bigger guys with more strength.
@chriserwalk4386 Of course. What I was getting at with my comment though is that in Rugby alot of the Polynesian boys have strength near this, WITH endurance. So what I'm saying is watch out for this record to be broken a few times when more Samoans start being better represented.
Another thing is weight-strength or gym-strength isn't everything. Some guys have superficial strength but aren't strong on the field in situations that require it. Not this guy, just speaking generally
The guy counting the reps said to paea "there you go horse"1:21. bears defense gets a run plugger. Paea with peppers on the d line is ALRIGHT compared to the my GIANTS d-line, although we could've used paea.
@pacman2326 Don't worry with Vernon Gholston and.... erm, don't know who else you have at DT apart from this dude, teams will basically be able to triple team Peppers and double team this guy. A sneeze or fart in the general direction of your other D-line men will be enough to knock them to the floor.
@frobishero We have amobi okoye from Houston who is a solid NFL starter no superstar, and Anthony adams who is also a solid NFL starter. Along with good reserves like matt toeina and henry melton(very good player) we should be ok up the middle.
@mwyatt787 Want to see how this guy works out. Just trolling a bit before. I'm a Lions fan. Thought he might have been a reach for you guys as his stats in college weren''t exactly stunning and I've not heard anything about him coming out of ur camp reports. Gotta keep an eye on the enemy lol.
@frobishero Yeah your right, that detriot dline is pretty close to being the best in the league, especially up the middle if fairley can comeback healthy from his latest injury situation. We need more Oline help in chicago than anything.
for his weight of 303lbs this is nothing special... everybody who is little more in training can bench press cca 40 times 80lbs or 35kg below him self
I agree to some extent. But the muscle endurance needed to perform 49 reps with anything 75% BW is awesome. Now on the negative side, I agree, I've seen guys at BW of 240+ or- do 30-35 reps with the same weight, and thats 93% of their BW, does that make they're lifts more impressive? Not really, but this is still impressive.
I played against this guy and he is without a doubt not only strong but he plays strong as fuck, he looped out to me on a play and I never saw him coming and he smashed me to the ground, I thought he used his shoulder but when I looked at the film he just clubbed me with one arm to the ground like a paper doll, and I'm 6'7" 320 pounds!!!

I went to high school with his wife and still keep in touch with her through FB whenever i can. This must be a very exciting time for them. I know she is very proud.
this dude better not be another jarron gilbert (bears drafted him in 09 because he could jump out of a pool)....just look at that list of players @ 1:30, none of those names stand out to me. I just hope he isnt only a workout warrior....welcome to the bears tho
Yea, but he had a damn good career.... probably not as stellar as some people would think. That's probably another thing that attracted them. BEAR DOWN BABY!
@ratttttyyy When you're doing something that light, something of high repetitions, you don't need to do full range of motions. He's not training if you realized. That's BABY WEIGHT to him. He just wants the most reps.

Whats the deal with reps in the combine? Cause he sure doesn't do a full range of motion?
ratttttyyy 10 months ago
@ratttttyyy When you're doing something that light, something of high repetitions, you don't need to do full range of motions. He's not training if you realized. That's BABY WEIGHT to him. He just wants the most reps.
Durrrr.
