  • I had to do this in Maths!!!!! Happy Numbers and Happy Prime numbers!

  • my fav ep w Martha :-))

  • This episode shook me up...and solidified the fact that David Tennant's one of my favorite actors.

  • My maths tutor had no idea what the heck I was talking about when I asked him to explain happy primes to me :)

  • I Like this episode but it's quite disturbing

  • i tried this and either this information was inacurate or i did something wrong because it didnt reduce down to one.... :( i've failed the doctor

  • @phantomsonlylove if it's not a happy number, it doesn't go down to one, and goes in a loop. these are called sad numbers. 4 is a sad number 7 is a happy number

  • Always a favorite in episodes

  • New goal in life: Memorize this speech so that if I'm ever in a class where there's a unit on happy numbers, I can give this answer.

  • I want to become a math teacher and randomly prank my students by going "and these are the rainbow numbers"

  • I dunno what the big deal it, happy numbers REALLY aren't that hard to understand.

  • They're real. I really want to learn them but DAYUM, its incredibly mind boggling. Shows how intelligent the writers of Doctor Who are.

  • I'd love to storm through their quiz.

  • im probably an extreme dork for this but i googled happy primes and clicked on the wikipedia link and they had a list of happy primes and some were skipped in dw cuz there are some inbetween 313 331 367 and 379

  • lol, we do exercises like this in school, i luv happy numbers :D and the one he said is just a basic theoretica elimination.

  • I swear that guy plays Mr Mead in waterloo road? or is that just me?

  • He's so cute when he talks that fast in maths giberish :-)

  • Hmm... how about

    313+(1*18) = 331

    331+(2*18) = 367

    367+(3*18) = 421

Doctor failed, door shut, everybody died :)

  • @jester742 I have to say I still don't get it. This isn't how I was thinking the math went. Then again I was lost at sqare of its digits :p

  • @jester742

    313,331,367,379,383,397...... 907,937, 1009, 1033, 1039, 1093 ...... 10000000000411

  • Lol, after I saw this episode I had to look up happy primes to see if there was actually such a thing. I'd never heard of them. I supposed they just don't teach recreational mathematics anymore.

  • @BeginXtheXBegin Talk about dumbing down ^^.

  • ohh, happy primes, happy times. :)

  • I know all of the 1st 2nd and 3rd series off by heart , and i'm learning 4th and specials!

  • it's scary that i know this off by heart

"any number that reduces to one when you take the sum of the square of it's digits and continue iterating until it yeilds 1 is a happy number. Any number that doesn't, isn't. A happy prime is a number that's both happy and prime, now TYPE IT IN. I dunno, talk about dumbing down. Don't they teach recreational mathematics any more?"

^all from memory. ^ It was a sad year of complete obsession last year

  • @holly4davidt Thanks for posting that i was just about to look it up cuz i dont understand david when he says that

  • @holly4davidt I wouldn't call it sad.

  • @holly4davidt It's still an obsession for me. It kinda freaks out my family, I can recite almost any episode of doctor who...

  • Hi, from Master the Mainframe Part 2 Website.

  • hi master the mainframe :)

  • Loooove Doctor Who--and series three is my fav. Then two... brilliant!

  • "Don't they teach recreational mathematics any more?"

    :)

  • LOL..I love the "talk about dumbing down". This is one of my fav eps from this season

  • erm... wtf?

  • He he he. The doctor had a time lords upbringing. That included "Recreational Math" and playing around with massive amounts of radiation in the nursery. Back when he was a young child of 89.

  • "Don't the teach recreational mathematics anymore!?" XD I love The Doctor.

  • Happy Primes?

How can a number be happy?

  • take for example the number 7.

    7squared = 49

    4squared + 9squared = 97

    9squared + 7squared = 130

    1squared + 3squared + 0squared = 10

    1squared + 0squared = 1.

if the answer is 1 then it is happy.

  • 4 squared = 16

    1 squared + 6 squared = 37

    3 squared + 7 squared = 58

    5 squared + 8 squared = 89

    8 squared + 9 squared = 145

    1 squared + 4 squared + 5 squared = 42

    4 squared + 2 squared = 20

    2 squared + 0 squared = 4!

Then the number is not happy! Numbers is this cycle or that get caught in it are not happy (this cycle is unique apart from 1 squared =1)

  • Cool.

  • all u gys r in high school ? what a group here

  • What gives you that idea?

  • I was so surprised when I heard that Happy Primes were real. I mean, DAMN. Imaginary numbers, happy numbers? Those math people must be really bored.

  • happy numbers are easy aint they...not when he explains it! :| lol

  • very funny loved that ep

  • DOCTOR:Any number that reduces to one when you take the sum of the square of its digits and continue iterating until it yields 1 is a happy number, any number that doesn't, isn't. A happy prime is both happy and prime. NOW TYPE IT IN! lol

  • I am so glad he is not my maths teacher!

  • if he was my maths teacher i would become the ultimate teachers pet

  • But I bet you still wouldn't understand a word he says! That the only reason I don't want him as my maths teacher! lol.

  • Who cares about understanding what he says? The whole purpose he would make a brilliant ANYTHING teacher (never mind maths!) is that he's wonderful to drool after :)

  • I would be too distracted to listen to anything he says and when it comes to tests I would have to take horse tranquilises to calm down as I would be sure I would fail. I've had it drilled into me all my life that if I fail tests I am doomed to an unhappy and jobless life. But he still would be fun to have as a teacher!

  • Yeah, same here...my parents are super strict with grades...especially since my older brothers are all geniuses..

But still...David Tennant as a teacher...I can't help but drool over the idea :)

  • Try having my uncle! He's a Doctor (not the fly around in a TARDIS type, the medical one) and my cousins are under huge pressure, never mind me! The idea of him helping me revise makes me scream.

  • i totally agree. my friends and i are always hoping for the doctor when we here there's a sub.

I researched the consept of happy primes and recreational mathematics, i luv the 4th dimension(not time unfortunatly, but that's only a theory)

i luv scaring people with it

  • i cnt believe he can talk that fast!! lmao

  • Actually- I can think of another sci-fi David that can speak just as fast (if not faster)- David Hewlett... aka Rodney McKay from Stargate Atlantis.

  • lol
