This is actually my favorite song in the play. l actually like the play version better since they have the cast singing his part.
l can really relate to him but now l truly understand his mother as well. Obviously being an only child (like me) the mother has a vice grip on him resulting in the child rebelling & breaking free like an escaped prisoner. lt's hard 4 some mothers to let go of their kids. ln those cases, they nee 2 QUICKLY produce a grand kid 4 the mom 2 have 2 replace them!
@Sogwa this is my fav song in the play too...but I don't think it is just about the mother's letting go...it is also about the son's inner conflict of wanting to go and yet himself having trouble letting go just like the mother...that is my read on it...I think all those voices toward the end invoke this conflict and confusion for the young man
I'm a hardcore classical musical theatre fan, and it just didn't float my boat so to speak. I didn't like the whole "storyline blended into a rock concert" thing.
Towards the end, there's the mom singing, Youth singing "gotta get away," and Stew and the band singing "this is your life, it's the only one you've got. this is your life, there ain't no way out." A bit too much going on. That Daniel Breaker sounded great though, from what I could hear of it.
Thanks for posting this. I had missed it when it was televised.

I saw the show and didn't like it much, but I loved Daniel Breaker, so it was okay. Daniel graduated from my high school, so I was very proud of him.

I disagree, I think that it brings across a kind of confused and trapped tone.
