Come on, guys, this is really just.. basic understanding of maths .. You learn these things in the 5th grade at worst, it's not an "algebra class" ..
Anyways, back on topic, you forgot a small note: you don't always get 1089 if a is greater than c; you will get 0 if (a-c)=1 (say for the number 271); that is because (a-c)-1 will be 0 and hence at 1:44 you no longer get a 3 digit number, you get 99..

So 1 hundred is taken of, but that has to be compensated with another hundred, so its: 100d-d-100+90+10.. Hence -100+90+10 at the end. (it makes no difference because it's 0) For short that's 100d-100+90+10-d, or 100(d-1)+90+10-d, exactly what he said (I'm not really sure about this but i think I'm right)
I prefer his model of thinking of it as a number between 1 and 9 times 99 - looking at the possible three digit solutions of that 198, 297, 396, 495, 594, 693, 792, 891 - notice that the first and last digits add up to 9 so reversing it and adding will mean you have 900 + 2*90 + 9 = 1089
It saves on some of the algebra but is more natural.

@shikoco as he said it only comes out to 1089 if the first number is greater than the last number. if they are equal the answer will always be 0.
