He was mentally insane. Whenever something dramatic happens in his life(his father dies in an accident at the slaughter house) he makes himself think that he Is an alien friend helping himself cope. He put himself into this mind set after his wife and daughter were raped and killed. So when they interviewed him and hypnotized him, they were talking to his delusional state and not actually him.

The movie makes you think prot was a schizo, that's where the film truly succeeds. Please don't be confused though, as I'm seeing a lot of posters completely getting the concept wrong. Go read the 4 volumes of K-PAX novel and you will understand. prot in fact is an Alien, I know the movie is good at mixin' it up, but really... there should of been 0 doubt after prot plotted his home-world on the star dome. regardless of whats in the novel i think the idea of the movie was to make people think, to not give a definitive answer either way but to let it depend on the person as to what answer they decide upon....within the movie the doctor and the patients symbolise the potential difference in audience reactions, one would cling to logic the other would be more open to the idea of prot being an alien.

nobody knows if prot was a made up character Robert made up so he wouldn't have to deal with his problems

yet we also don't know if prot was really in Robert's body and he was telling the truth.

There are many scenes in the movie where we see that there's evidence prot is an alien, but there is also evidence that suggests Robert had gone mad and created the character

i think that the message of this movie is to not underestimate anybody. he is very very smart, and he is just toying with everybody. he convinced everybody, even the doctor that he's from k-pax, and the message of underestimation comes from the part where the doctor hypnotizes him, and says that his friend was a "cow striker", but he was referring to himself

He Knew all that information. When he left robert porter´s body didnt react, because of the trauma that he had suffered from that incident. When Prot was taking control of his body, everything went smooth. However, when they tried to refresh Robert´s memories. he went haywire. It WAS however

When I saw this in theaters, I saw the "deleted scenes" version where Prot DISAPPEARS at the end - FOR GOOD, body and all! There was NO shot of Prot under the bed and no "wheelchair ending" in the movie I saw in theaters. Watch the DVD deleted scenes, note the surveillance VCR scence and the scene where they are searching the hospital. That's what I saw in theaters! (NOT to be confused with the "alternate ending" feature on the DVD.) Did anyone else see the version I describe?

heres what i got out of this movie and the ending. The person we see throughout the movie is Prot using Roberts body to manifest a physical being. He uses a human body because it is the easiest way to interac with others, much like his explanation of why a bubble forms a cirlce. When Prot is under hypnosis there is a sort of clash between Robert and Prot's memories. At the end of the movie Prot returns to K-pax, and Robert regains control of his body, but is in a catatonic state.

In the second and third book a DNA test is done. It shows that Robert P. and prot are different persons. And he goes on TV and performs light travel, which works: he is suddenly at the other side of the stage.

that body is Robert Porter, but it is Prot's spirit. Prot's in his body. Prot goes back to K-PAX. Porter asked for help, that's where Prot came in. Prot took control over Porter's body. That's why the rest of the Ward is like 'That's NOT Prot!' They knew, because Prot wasn't inside of Porter.

Prot is an alien entity from the planet K-Pax who has travelled to Earth to study our race. He is inhabiting the body of a human male named Robert Porter, which is why he looks human.
