Greg played wrong notes in a lot of his solos. I think back in the Black Flag days he didn't fully understand the science behind what chords and scales you can play together. Some say "It's jazz" but I don't buy it! That said, Greg Ginn is still one of my favorite guitar players who influenced me tremendously on guitar for many years. He's a brilliant and creative man! I love his riffs, song writing, and his "whacky" solos.
This I can say...being a life-long Black Flag fan, NO ONE that was ever in the band was ever, nor ever tried to be top anything on any level...the mere gusto of their attitude paved the way for many 'o bands to find success. Greg was not your typical "winner" but made our music scene better by trying harder. Thanks to Henry for allowing us to understand their last stand. Cheers!
Aztecasteve you stupid shithead, Rollins had almost nothing to do with the band's different sound from '83 onwards. Greg Ginn was THE man behind all this, as he composed the songs and wrote 90% of the lyrics. And frankly, as much as I like all the other Flag singers (especially Dez and Keith), Henry had an intensity that just made him better suited for the "different" BF sound.
I'd love to see this effect free but still, it's Black Flag. I gotta get all of this old footage of them. I saw them in Montreal on the Slip It In tour, December of '84.
I love Black Flag, honestly who watched a HARDCORE PUNK BAND VIDEO and complains about quality? I know how I like my punk and hardcore punk and it's not THX, remastered HD digital, thank you very much, it's raw and unhinged, visceral and brutal and nothing refined about it. Great video. Five fuckin' stars.
The mere fact that Black Flag chose to further expand on its musical foundation (and alienate those such as you) is an indication that those albums were indeed valuable.
YOU perceive as much but that's not an assessment that's either accurate or fair. The poetry by Rollins was hardly a catastrophe (but Ron Reyes was). At any rate- Ginn wrote almost all of Black Flag's material and no one could inject as much venom in it as the aforementioned. The band was unfairly maligned thanks to hardcore punk purists such as yourself but as it turns out- it was Black Flag's most influential period (and it's not as if the transformation was anything to apologize for).
Demo version with dez is the best

Why don't people admit Greg is the greatest guitarist, punk or otherwise?

Ginn = God

@LTopomcFly He definitely needs a spot in the creative and influential guitarists of all time. Guitar World never talks about him. They should!

Before henry the band had a tight punk sound when henry came in the picture they went a different direction
In my head album----Henry
Family Man----Henry
Loose Nut-----Henry
Annihilate This Week---Henry
all these albums weren't that good to tell you the truth
Damage was probably the only respectable album

You idiot! Rollins was there because the band progressed way past the Morris era songs! Handle it, or fuck off!!!

I don't give a shit about the quality....thanks for posting! Always great to hear and see new classic flag footage. Ginn is the man!
