a wise lesson. kinda hard to imagine yourself beside him actually focusing on what hes saying lol. but right at the end, i think i understand what he means.
Doesn't matter. Whichever hand you want to turn the handle with but check the reel is set up correctly i.e the drag should operate when the line is being pulled off. You can reset it, usually by removing the spool and changing a pawl or something similar inside the reel.
Thanks for the vid's Boonie. Bought my first fly rod today, gave it a shot.. I caught a pretty big tree branch. :P
I couldn't figure out how to find my rhythm. Only way I could get the distance or shoot line was with the whipping, spooking method. Was just happy to be out there trying though. I've only watched the first four lessons and I already feel like I could start catching fish and look like a legit fly fisher. Thanks for the scientific approach towards fly fishing. :)
i just got a nice fly rod handed down to me from my dad and im kinda starting to get it but im still confused, i can get the fly out but not that far, well i have alot of trees to watch out for, im gonna be salt water fly fishing, and tips?
m1garand77, i don't saltwater fly fish, but i can tell you to wash your reel with fresh water after use, get a saltwater tippet and leader, and depending on the fish get the right lines (lbs.) or it might cost you.
thank you very much, yes i do know to wash it off, and about the tippet thing, i have just been using some regular mono leader of oprprian size, i know its not the best but it sure works, thanks -M1
...i was testing this in my backyard before I ever went to a river(just using a sinker instead of an actual fly) lol dunno what was going on but the result was me getting hit in the face with a small piece of metal!
lol, i was going to use yarn before i used the sinker but decided against it.. eh, now i just go to the river and hope i get lucky and dont hit myself and or the trees.
i just bought a fly rod for 10$ at a yard sale. im not sure if its too good, but i suppose its fine to start out with. any seasoned veterans at fly-fishing out there: any tips for a teen who is eagerto learn and hit the river? i appreciate it.
Just get out and fish. There are usually some good regional magazines to help you decide good times/fly selection. I started out by asking around at the local fly shops and striking up conversations with other fisherman on the river. If you are polite and honest about your abilities you will be amazed how willing people are to pass along some knowledge. Good luck and tight loops.
the whipping is caused by you not waiting long enough in the back cast so the line does not have time to completely make its turn. The whipping on the water means your accelerating to much and if its making whipping sounds its not having enough time on the back cast. Start slower then go faster. Make sure the loop size is perfect.
You're not pausing after your back cast. Start slow, then fling back the rod, pause and watch your fly, then go forward again. Get a rhythm going and you'll eventually get the line to lay down properly.
dale and ardeth, my bet would be that your backcast angle is too steep, and/or that you apply force a bit too late. both these things can send your fly to the ground. by applying some decent acceleration to your rod right at the start of your backcast, you'll give your line some upward momentum that will help. for the angle, look at your rod all the way through till a good one becomes a second nature. curling simply = too little or too much velocity, only practice will help there.
You are putting your power into the centre of the rod, this whips the line and gives the cracking sound. You need to practise flicking just the top 3rd of the rod.
Starting at horizontal or below, yes, but try starting with the rod tip just above the water's surface like an inch off.You will notice the difference dramatically in the back cast. Also notice where the wind was coming from in the video ? its a lot different harder with no wind at all.

can you practise without a hook?
M0vir 1 year ago
@M0vir Sure just bind a tiny piece of wood at the end of the line or something that has similar size and weight as the hook

I have the same problem. And the line and fly whips the ground behind me so they both get destroyed after a while

@dale4167 you do not wait long enough on your back cast, you need to let the line get straight before to push foward,
