hey steve, i am trying to build muscle and lose a the left over of my lower belly fat. Ii workout at night and i eat enough through out the day. If im feeling like really hungry after my workout at night, should i eat a small meal again? or will it just be adding more calories. I want to build muscle not fat.
HOW many questions can we ask? I have issues with my blood sugar. I faint when my sugar is too low or too high. I know that one has to control if but I want to know if muscle growth can help that? I am a female.

@baseballme1t A pump doesn't not indicate muscle growth or intense contraction. If sonebody is very strong you can do a bunch of push-ups, get a pump but no muscle growth.
@Kelvin702 30 minutes of HIIT LMAO! Get outta here man that sounds more like endurance training aerobic not anaerobic you would be in the hospital if you did that
hey my question to you is about carbs. Is there a limit to the amount of carbs a person should intake to lose weight? I do a 1 hour full body weight training session once every 3 days because I'm just starting out, but in another week I'm switching to a split routine. I also do 30-50 minutes of cardio twice a day. I usually do HIIT for 20-40 mins for each cardio session depending on what I can handle at that time, but sometimes I just do a moderate pace on the elyptical with resistance for 60

Hey Steve I wanted to know if weight training like at 8pm to 9pm will effect results because since you have already used some energy during the day will it effect your performance? Thanks
wasap steve..ur videos have helped me alot in achieving my ripped abs... Im a 19 year old, 145 pound soccer player...I would like to add some bulk to my frame. i love doing my cardio, but do i have to stop cardio and just stick to weight training to get bigger in time for the new season? Would weight training 3 times a week and HIIT 3 times a week help me get bigger?

how about planning cheat days? let's say your goal is to eat 1500 calories per day, then just eat 1000 calories for four days in a row, then on the fifth day you can add in those 2000 extra calories. 2000+1500=3500! Boom! you got yourself a badass cheat days with 3500 calories :D

i find for me the best results come from a sugary protein drink (such as gatorade and whey, or even fat free icream (which is loaded with maltrodextrin) with whey mixed into a shake) I do this not so much for restoring(which it accomplishes to do) but in order to create an insulin spike that drives the vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and amino acids as soon as possible into my muscle cells so they can return to an anabolic state and start protein synthesis as soon as possible.
Why listen to anti-steroid spammers and mistakes of god like steroidsR4? Check steroidTRUTH channel for the honest TRUTH about the positive effects of anabolic steroids.
Always ThumbsDown and hit "Spam" on all SteroidsR4/AreFor and her girlsfriends posts.
That whole sugar reason is why i like to take my creatine drink right after my workout because it's loaded with like 30 grams of sugar, it's basically kool-aid with creatine. Do you think an energy drink would benefit someone who has a very high intensity cardio/weight training program? I do understand that they have a lot of caffeine and everything.. Oh and your videos are EXTREMELY detailed i'm so glad i came across them! Thanks!
Love all your videos. Just a question: can I replace my glycogen storage with high-glucose foods after a workout? You mentioned drinks. I was wondering if it also applies to food. Perhaps it takes longer to digest and doesn't have the same impact as the drinks.
I'm into bodybuilding (not professionally or competitively). But I have intense, compound exercise-based routines. Deadlifts, bench press, squat, military press, standing v bar rows, leg presses, fewer isolation, etc.
I don't recommend having a coke. Your muscles need a nutrient-dense carbohydrate source after an intense workout. Eat fruit instead to replenish your glycogen stores.
Hi steve, Im a med school student and avid lifter. Ive been maintaining my size for years. Im happy at 5"10, 168lbs, 8%BF. Recently I begain doing HIT. Finished my 1st cycle of 5 weeks. I have always cycled exersize routines. I understand the principles of utilizing different fibers / etc. but thats the whole goal of HIT (not hiit). To exhaust every aspect / fiber of your muscle in an intense and short workout. For the first time in years I gained str. Should I still cycle it?
I'm also a HIT lifter. I tend to do HIT most of the time,..and VOLUME 12 weeks a year. But that's me. I like the HIT approach, it suits my time schedule very well. I believe very much in the " Less..but Harder = More" equation. I don't cycle that much because I like to reap the benefits from ONE 12 week cycle of training,..and then use them in the next cycles of training. Nevertheless, when I switch back to volume the variety makes it all interesting and fun. You get the best of both worlds!
" Steve, you're a clever man." That's an odd opening statement. I'll give you my opinion on his qualifications. I've been involved with sports and physical fitness for over 30 years now. Studied quite a bit and have competed in multitudes of sports..one at the professional level. I DO know a lot, but I've learned, re-learned, and clarified quite a few points on things that I thought I knew..here at BodyPerformance. TRUST ME, he's qualified to speak.
I dont think akastanley was attacking Steve, I think the opening statement was a complement actually.
He didnt ask for your opinion on Steves quals.
I too am a competitive athlete, perhaps you should stop blowing your own trumpet. Maybe akastanley just wants to increase his knowledge further and is curious on what to read, am I right?
PS Steve, well done on yet anohter 5* video. Continue to bring the light to the fitness world, the first man since Mike Mentzer to do so.
I like to drink a 12 ounce Steel Reserve 211, 8.1%, immediately after my weightlifting workouts while I'm doing my stretches. It works- I can still deadlift 400 pounds for 10 reps at 43 with no steroids, ever. The Steel has the carbs everybody is talking about and it lowers the weightlifting induced hypertension. Steel Reserve is like a poor man's steroid- why do you think it is the beer of choice of America's homeless?
My brother did P90X for 2 rounds (180 days), he also became weaker. He was doing so well with solid free weight lifting. I was training him via email. He's an open minded guy so he just sort of decided ot give P90X a try. His interval intensity on stationary bike dropped somewhat. His lower body leg strength only droppped slightly, but there were NO improvements in these categories. His smaller UPPER BODY muscles however, lost muscle mass and strength to a larger degree. I know why and I was mad!
let me start out by saying im 41 years old and getting back in shape. Steve, i have tried the p90x and when i did the system i feel like ive become weaker.why is this?? i know 130 lbs dumbbells arent that heavy, but i was benching this before. now ive tried it and it is very difficult. why? i would like to thank you (steve) for taking the time to help us on our fitness journey and all the good information you provide us. take care.
Zaharah, I think you're right about protein shakes and amino acids. But creatine has some real benefits. It's one of the few supplements that actually can help.
Guys you need to read some real exercise and nutrition books and I am not talking fitness mags. I talking about the ones that have documented case studies showing the results. If you are lifting heavy and training hard you better be getting in a protein/carb DRINK within 20 minutes of finishing your workout. The protein helps to blunt the catabolic effects of cortisol which becomes elevated from your workout and the carbs replace muscle and liver glycogen stores.
man that is very true, i always get tiered the second week. i drink protein shakes and take amino acid, creatine...etc. these products are just advertizments and a waste of mony nothing more. chiken breast and orange jiuce sounds amazing. thank you steve, your biggest fan.
Dude, amino acids are found in meat! Taking BCAA's is important if your goal is to build muscle. How much meat are you willing to eat? There is a lot of hype on supps but if you educate yourself you can sort through the garbage. Creatine is a must for anyone trying to build muscle and not doing roids. You need to read some good supplement books and one on nutrient timing.
There's always going to be some protein in your post workout meal. The emphasis should be replacing glycogen of course. I shoot for the 20 minute time limit as well. I no longer believe in BCAA's supplementation. I took them for years. I've found NO difference between taking and not taking them. When you start talking about nutrient timing and cortisol, you're starting to get off into some areas very questionable science. A lot of nonsense being sold and preached in "nutrition" books.
Nutrient timing and cortisol is not questionable at all. It is documented and proven for a fact with the studies showing the results. As for BCAA's, most respected people in the field will tell you that if you are after size you should take these before and after your workout. As a matter of fact they suggest taking the carb/protein during your workout but I prefer right after.
Ditto's geobros! Hard to get through to people, but you keep trying because you want to help them. I still can't believe I'm seeing these videos on the net,..on Youtube, by someone who's so informed. It's almost odd,..but here he is.
I love people who understand, I do jiu jitsu and after I eat pasta and have gatorade ect lots of carbs and guys at the gym cant believe thats what I eat they are brain washed by this protien after work out and this stupid Atkins diet, carbs are bad, carbs are fattning.. good job steve, i get sick of trying to explain this stuff to people
Thanks, but I have one question. If I were to do a routine that focuses on strength (rippetoe's starting strength) would I also see size gains from it or just strength gains?
Hey Steve, Josh here Im from England and I don't know if you guys have it over there, but my bible to gaining muscle is a magazine called "Mens Health", which is full of quick fix method articles to building muscle fast, yet most of the advice you advocate conflicts with the majority of information I have read, however you seem to be the Zen master in the art of building muscle and keeping fit.
I can do 65's for 8 reps if I do of course 1 arm at a time AND hold a 65 lbs. DB in the opposite hand. I did 75's once for 4 reps but I think my form sucked. A buddy of mine who weighs at least 30 lbs. less then me can do 75's for 8 strict reps. LOL..God that pisses me off. He's just got real big and strong biceps. I'm much stronger then him on shoulders however. Steve's got big Bi's. He can can do 85's,.. I can see that from here.
I can only do 55s...Im jealous lol. I seem to have plateaued. I've been at 8 reps of 55s for a couple weeks now. Then my form starts to go south. I think Im going to pick up the 50s, do a few more reps (12) and pick up the 60s and try to get 5-6 good reps.
Yes he's definitely right about this. I actually let the protein wait until the next meal. There's actually plenty of time for that as it takes like 2-3 days to repair those muscles. But getting glycogen replaced post workout in that 2 hour window is real important and simple carbs really do it best. I don't even look for the 2 hour window. I try to get that meal consumed in less then 30 minutes after workout...or even 20 minutes.
1. You DON"T need electrolytes from a simple workout therefore adding SALT to OJ is not needed.
2. OJ has fructose. Not bad BUT much too slow when it comes to ABSORPTION after a workout.
3. AND Coke would be fine for an in-shape athlete after and INTENSE workout. These are the scientific concepts so called trainers and arm chair experts don't understand!!!!!
the best post workout drink after an intense workout would be a ratio of 4:1 carbs to protein; I mix around 350 mL of orange juice with a tiny bit of protein powder with a tiny bit of creatine. also, electrolytes are crucial. adding a tiny bit of salt to the orange juice will help that. since the orange juice has potassium, you receive electrolytes, glycogen, replenishment, carbs, and a little protein. Coke does NOT have pottasium, "good" carbs, or protein. Coke is out of the question
fitagent, I responded to you other post as well. P90X unfortunately is an inferior short term program that WILL lose you some weight, but not as efficiently or for as long as the program Steve will set up for you. You'll spend $140 dollars for P90X, and that's just for the openers. If you spent the same $140 at Body Performance, you'd come out the other side leaner, with more muscle and better overall shape, and with the ability to also help and teach others about real training. BP is better!
I want to increase muscle, but burn fat, should I do 90x? I'm 160 and want to loose fat percentage, will I drop in weight by loosing muscle? I'm slim but my belly is still pudgy.
this question is regarding the post workout meal, its the sugar spiking the insulin creating gycogen faster right? and if thats the case does it have to be a sugary drink or can it be just fruit? thanks steve
Jda, Izzy wrote you a good idea to get things going. He's right, but there's more to it. You need a more comphrensive answer. That's the problem with the Youtube stuff, people are looking for 1 paragraph to solve their entire training regime. It's so much more involved. Get a complete bench program and all over training regime set up for you. If I were you Jda, I'd join Steve's site for a short time and get a complete overhaul of things. Otherwise, you're just going to remain in "question mode."
You know WIGTRON5000, what you said stunningly profound and correct. I do it, but as I look around the gym,....98% do not. That IS how you gain size and strength, and no one follows it. Totally right.
Thanks Steve- i drink a high sugar content drink with 30g protein- helps with recovery and prevents too much muscle soreness-you reckon the protein is a waste at this point?
im hoping at least someone on here can answer my question on how to improve my bench (or even perhaps overhead press too) i start out with like 145lbs on the bar but i can only do 5 reps my first set and it hasn't improved in a long time. after, i decrease the weight on the bar for a few more sets with relatively the same amount of reps. but it has not improved in a long time.i've been doing this stuff for about 9 months now. can ANYONE help me? i would appreciate any help i can get.
Incorporate NEGATIVES, they work like magic. For example, if you can do 135 for 5 reps. Example, Set 1 125x6, Set 2 135 x5, then set 3, Have someone spot you and try 145 for as many reps as you can (these are your negatives, FOCUS on lowering the weight SLOWLY). You Lower the weith SLOWLY, count 1, 1000, 2, 1000 and touch you chest lightly, then a buddy pulls the weight up at the same time you push up. The point is to get your muscles accustomed to lifting heavier weigth, hence, stronger.
if you've been doing 145 lbs for the past 9 months with no progress, you're probably not giving yourself enough time to recover. also, be careful not to incorporate TOO many intensity boosters, like negatives or forced reps. negatives are good at times, i wouldn't ever advise anybody to use forced reps, unless you're taking steroids that is. you're body just doesn't recover well after forced reps, assuming steroids arent involved
How well you do in fitness and health is a testament not to what you can do, but to-what-you-understand. Knowledge is power. Consider a few months on Steve's site.Think of it like taking a semester college class..but only for $80 bucks! You'll come to really understand this whole thing and take your body wherever you want it to go while helping others do the same. You'll attract the opposite sex with ease. You'll be the person people consult, instead of always being the one looking for an answer.
I've been around lifting and competitive sports since the mid 70's. I've come to know quite a bit. In 1999, I got a chance to speak over the phone (for one hour) with a nationally known fitness writer/athlete. He's known for teaching ultra-leanness. Even though I read 9 of his books, the phone cosultation was the final clarification on so many points. It was $150 dollars for one hour (like $200 today). I JUMPED at the chance!! Had to wait 3 weeks to get in. BEST $150 dollars I've ever spent!!!!
That's why the his interactive site is SO GOOD! The site allows you DAILY access to Steve, videos, insight from others and a place where you can ask a myriad of questions and receive detail answers. You can go to the gym that day and try them out and report back later with your results and experience. How's you're diet coming along? Is your bodyfat dropping and small ajustments you can make to keep in dropping. Steve, and everyone else on site lends a hand to guide you to your fitness goals.
I think the questions & Answers on Youtube does at least get peoples attention and shows Steve's dedication to working with and backing up anyone who seeks out top conditioning. BUT, I don't think people realize that you can't solve and design lifetime " big picture " fitness programs one question here..one answer there. You have to be taught the larger concepts on which the smaller answers are formulated. You'll always be the one asking question instead of being the one who can give the answers.
I'm stunned how many people keep firing off these questions like Steve has nothing to do all day but sit on Youtube and answer them. It's VERY time consuming and difficult to not only write out the answer, but write it out in just such a way that the person asking can understand. You also don't know if the person asking is ever going to come back to get their answer. NO ONE is going to continually do that for FREE. Steve answers are spot on, but you can't "piece-meal" the big picture solutions.
So true! These are the main reasons I started my website. To help people who really wanted to change their lives and who were willing to work for their goals. What they don't understand is I answer ALL questions on my website using audio files so members can listen to them. But your help and support is greatly appreciated!
I think he has already answered to every possible question in his previous questions but if for someone it is not enough why not ask money for it, it's job after all.
Steve, I am looking to lose about 10-15 lbs but am wanting to not only tone but possibly build a bit of muscle at the same time. My question is is this even possible at the same time? say if i needed 3000 calories for the day to build muscle and I only take in 2500 will my body take from fat storage to make up the extra 500 calories?
Yes you can do it, I do it all the time. You have to lift heavy and still cut calories, mostly carbs in the form of starches. Play with your macro nutrient ratios to see what works best for you since everyone is different. I can go as low at 15% of my diet on carbs and still function but other can only go to about 30%.
Pax you make some good points, but I gotta tell ya I've had just as much success in muscle gain and/or fat loss with BCAA's and attention to supplements, and when I did not. I don't take BCAA's anymore, I don't take protein powder anymore, I don't consume protein bars anymore, and a whole host of other things I took in the past. I focus more on what I'm DOING, instead of what I'm TAKING. Creatine however is good if you don't eat much red meat. I take fewer supplements, but plan and train better.
i know that. what i want to know is how to get bigger legs at home becoz in teh gym i don't do much on my legs only the quadricep lft and the hamstring pull machines..
Does anyone know how to get bigger legs without squats? I've got a bad knee (skiing accident and blew out my knee) hasn't been the same since. I can handle some weight, but if too much It pops out of place and hurts like hell. Ugh! Thanks everyone!
Mzjacky7, I'm not Steve but I think I can help here. First off, I was wondering if you exercise? I'm guessing you do. When someone says they want to get tight and toned, it really means they want to get lean and strong. Getting lean and strong...or as you say, " Toned and Tight," means incorporating a some progressive resistance along with a bit of cardio work, and then taking in a few less calories then you're burning over time. Over weeks of doing this properly, you will get toned and tight.
i have one question for you i am teenager want to know how i can get tight im not over weight or anything i just want my whole body to be tight ..do i diet and exercise or how much exercise am i supposed to be doing in order ot get toned and tight ...please please answer my question im really frustrated right now because i feel like im not improving at all..
Steve, would Ensure (plus) be a good post work out drink since it's relatively high in sugar? Also I typically work out at 4am in the morning before going to sleep, should I change that up? (I usually get my 7 hours of sleep either way) lol
Muscle tone is a function of body fat percentage? Creating a calorie deficit is the only way to reduce bodyfat,...that's correct. You see your muscle more obviously with lower bodyfat. But muscle tone refers to the number of muscle fibers recruited to perform an activity. The more intense the stress on the muscle, The more fibers recruited, which results in a higher degree of Tone. I don't know, you'll have to explain that bodyfat-tone one again. I don't get it?
I think we just have a different definition of muscle tone. ;) High reps with less weight increases muscular endurance, but doesn't influence the surrounding fat tissue, the loss of which gives you a toned look. The concept of toning is highly suspicious anyways imo, so let's leave it at that.
The suggestion below is only one variation and is not the safest if you train alone. You could do and should do more than three sets sometimes. Your muscles are dumb and only understand one thing and that is pressure. That can come in the form of more weight or more time under tension (isometric holds) with less weight. Map out your workout and do some program design for variation.
oh yeh and when i'm benching i do 1 high set then 1 low set, to rip and tone.. a PTI in the TA showed me that, i usually do 8 on 80kg then 8 on 15kg and repeat, i'm 5'7 and 16 and 65kg (10.5 stone)
is this good ? any tips? i'd subscribe to your website but i've got no money
Steve is the man. Seriously go pay $20 better than having a personal trainer.

hey my question to you is about carbs. Is there a limit to the amount of carbs a person should intake to lose weight? I do a 1 hour full body weight training session once every 3 days because I'm just starting out, but in another week I'm switching to a split routine. I also do 30-50 minutes of cardio twice a day. I usually do HIIT for 20-40 mins for each cardio session depending on what I can handle at that time, but sometimes I just do a moderate pace on the elyptical with resistance for 60

i find for me the best results come from a sugary protein drink (such as gatorade and whey, or even fat free icream (which is loaded with maltrodextrin) with whey mixed into a shake) I do this not so much for restoring(which it accomplishes to do) but in order to create an insulin spike that drives the vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and amino acids as soon as possible into my muscle cells so they can return to an anabolic state and start protein synthesis as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Steve,
Love all your videos.
Thanks!

Should I still cycle it?
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
I'm also a HIT lifter. I tend to do HIT most of the time,..and VOLUME 12 weeks a year. But that's me. I like the HIT approach, it suits my time schedule very well. I believe very much in the " Less..but Harder = More" equation. I don't cycle that much because I like to reap the benefits from ONE 12 week cycle of training,..and then use them in the next cycles of training. Nevertheless, when I switch back to volume the variety makes it all interesting and fun. You get the best of both worlds!

Zaharah, I think you're right about protein shakes and amino acids. But creatine has some real benefits. It's one of the few supplements that actually can help.
brushfour 2 years ago
Guys you need to read some real exercise and nutrition books and I am not talking fitness mags. I talking about the ones that have documented case studies showing the results. If you are lifting heavy and training hard you better be getting in a protein/carb DRINK within 20 minutes of finishing your workout. The protein helps to blunt the catabolic effects of cortisol which becomes elevated from your workout and the carbs replace muscle and liver glycogen stores.
pax41 2 years ago
man that is very true, i always get tiered the second week. i drink protein shakes and take amino acid, creatine...etc. these products are just advertizments and a waste of mony nothing more. chiken breast and orange jiuce sounds amazing. thank you steve, your biggest fan.
zakarnah 2 years ago
Dude, amino acids are found in meat! Taking BCAA's is important if your goal is to build muscle. How much meat are you willing to eat? There is a lot of hype on supps but if you educate yourself you can sort through the garbage. Creatine is a must for anyone trying to build muscle and not doing roids. You need to read some good supplement books and one on nutrient timing.
pax41 2 years ago
There's always going to be some protein in your post workout meal. The emphasis should be replacing glycogen of course. I shoot for the 20 minute time limit as well. I no longer believe in BCAA's supplementation. I took them for years. I've found NO difference between taking and not taking them. When you start talking about nutrient timing and cortisol, you're starting to get off into some areas very questionable science. A lot of nonsense being sold and preached in "nutrition" books.
brushfour 2 years ago
Nutrient timing and cortisol is not questionable at all. It is documented and proven for a fact with the studies showing the results. As for BCAA's, most respected people in the field will tell you that if you are after size you should take these before and after your workout. As a matter of fact they suggest taking the carb/protein during your workout but I prefer right after.

wigglecat122111 2 years ago
Yes he's definitely right about this. I actually let the protein wait until the next meal. There's actually plenty of time for that as it takes like 2-3 days to repair those muscles. But getting glycogen replaced post workout in that 2 hour window is real important and simple carbs really do it best. I don't even look for the 2 hour window. I try to get that meal consumed in less then 30 minutes after workout...or even 20 minutes.

BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
That is absolutely correct cokburn625. When intensity goes up, more rest is needed. Most people err on the side of over-training and don't know it.
brushfour 2 years ago
BodyPerformanceTV 2 years ago
the best post workout drink after an intense workout would be a ratio of 4:1 carbs to protein; I mix around 350 mL of orange juice with a tiny bit of protein powder with a tiny bit of creatine. also, electrolytes are crucial. adding a tiny bit of salt to the orange juice will help that. since the orange juice has potassium, you receive electrolytes, glycogen, replenishment, carbs, and a little protein.

People are always discussing if it is possible to train inner and outer chest or lower and upper parts of muscles.
What do you think?
WasGibtsLeute 2 years ago
Absolutely NOT!! You can gain muscle AND lose fat, or keep your fat level the same as you put on muscle.
brushfour 2 years ago
Jda, Izzy wrote you a good idea to get things going. He's right, but there's more to it. You need a more comphrensive answer. That's the problem with the Youtube stuff, people are looking for 1 paragraph to solve their entire training regime. It's so much more involved. Get a complete bench program and all over training regime set up for you. If I were you Jda, I'd join Steve's site for a short time and get a complete overhaul of things. Otherwise, you're just going to remain in "question mode."

Thanks Steve- i drink a high sugar content drink with 30g protein- helps with recovery and prevents too much muscle soreness-you reckon the protein is a waste at this point?
rccaulfield 2 years ago
that recovery and muscle soreness is mainly from the protein. Sugar is just so u don't get fatigue etc.
if u work out at night like i do i wouldn't recommend taking sugar since u might gain weigh while u sleep so i take something sweet during the day.

im hoping at least someone on here can answer my question on how to improve my bench (or even perhaps overhead press too) i start out with like 145lbs on the bar but i can only do 5 reps my first set and it hasn't improved in a long time. after, i decrease the weight on the bar for a few more sets with relatively the same amount of reps. but it has not improved in a long time.i've been doing this stuff for about 9 months now. can ANYONE help me? i would appreciate any help i can get.
Jda4160 2 years ago
Incorporate NEGATIVES, they work like magic. For example, if you can do 135 for 5 reps. Example, Set 1 125x6, Set 2 135 x5, then set 3, Have someone spot you and try 145 for as many reps as you can (these are your negatives, FOCUS on lowering the weight SLOWLY). You Lower the weith SLOWLY, count 1, 1000, 2, 1000 and touch you chest lightly, then a buddy pulls the weight up at the same time you push up. The point is to get your muscles accustomed to lifting heavier weigth, hence, stronger.
izzyironmaidenfan 2 years ago
thank you very much! only 1 thing though..i don't really have anyone who can spot me cause i work out in my home.
Jda4160 2 years ago
if you've been doing 145 lbs for the past 9 months with no progress, you're probably not giving yourself enough time to recover. also, be careful not to incorporate TOO many intensity boosters, like negatives or forced reps. negatives are good at times, i wouldn't ever advise anybody to use forced reps, unless you're taking steroids that is. you're body just doesn't recover well after forced reps, assuming steroids arent involved

My question is is this even possible at the same time? say if i needed 3000 calories for the day to build muscle and I only take in 2500 will my body take from fat storage to make up the extra 500 calories?
calgaryman2583 2 years ago
Yes you can do it, I do it all the time. You have to lift heavy and still cut calories, mostly carbs in the form of starches. Play with your macro nutrient ratios to see what works best for you since everyone is different. I can go as low at 15% of my diet on carbs and still function but other can only go to about 30%.
pax41 2 years ago
Pax you make some good points, but I gotta tell ya I've had just as much success in muscle gain and/or fat loss with BCAA's and attention to supplements, and when I did not. I don't take BCAA's anymore, I don't take protein powder anymore, I don't consume protein bars anymore, and a whole host of other things I took in the past. I focus more on what I'm DOING, instead of what I'm TAKING. Creatine however is good if you don't eat much red meat. I take fewer supplements, but plan and train better.

Steve, would Ensure (plus) be a good post work out drink since it's relatively high in sugar? Also I typically work out at 4am in the morning before going to sleep, should I change that up? (I usually get my 7 hours of sleep either way) lol
Great advice as always, thank you.

can u help me? i want to increase muscle mass on my legs especially my calves. what kind of body weight workout for legs do u suggest?
prinnybaal1990 2 years ago
Stick to 3 sets of 6-8 reps. If you can go beyond that many reps, increase your weight.
Less weight, more reps = more endurance and tone.
Less reps, more weight = larger muscle mass.
Arnie is known for doing this in his bodybuilding days.

Muscle tone is a function of body fat percentage, creating a calorie deficit is the only way to "tone".
