@9LC Maybe you should go back with me to Allan Holdsworth and Robert Fripp, if you know who they are. Technique itself is not sufficient to make music. You need to put some ideas in, some breathing, some phrasing, some expression. Petrucci and Portnoy are producing only speed here. You can say "bla-bla-bla" a hundred times per second and still you are not saying anything interesting. Music is about expression, it is not a sport.

@ivandksd If you haven't already, look up Dream Theater too. 3 of the 4 members of this band are in it (all but the bassist, though DT's bassist is better imo). They aren't strictly instrumental, but they have plenty of that to go around. I'd recommend the songs: "Stream of Consciousness," "Dance of Eternity," and "Ytse Jam."

@Eduardot12345556 Yes and no. The bassist for DT is John Myung, but the bass player here is the equally legendary Tony Levin. Also, at the time the album was written and recorded, Jordan was not part of DT. He didn't join the band until a few years later. So it started out as 2 of 4 being DT, and now it's 3 of 4. Jaw dropping music in either band's case though :D
