can someone please help me whenever i go into face mode or any mode and try to select a face an edge or a vertice the whole object goes red and i cant edit individual faces or verts. p.s. im working in 2011
Great Demo - If you could Please Please do detailed step by step tutorials here on Youtube using the MAYA 2011 platform tutorials in the maya program - You can find them by being in Maya and then go up to Help and then click on Getting Started with Maya - then start making tutorials that coinside step by step with those long drawn out reading tutorials - we need to get to the point and do these tutorials using visual step by steps rather than reading all the mumbo jumbo .. Thanks
I have a question. Everytime I use Maya on my computer a portion of the panel's view is blocked on the right side by a gray box. There are no problems with my far clip plane. Any suggestions?
There's no difference. A company called Alias origanally made Maya, but it was taken over by Autodesk a couple of years ago. So you won't see "Autodesk Maya" on older books, or on older versions of the software.

um, ur kinda dumb, no offense, this looks nothing like blender, I have blender and IT IS THE WORST PROGRAM IN HISTORY! ALL THE GRAPHICS ARE FUCKING POLYGONAL, LIKE WTF IS THE POINT OF MAKING A POLYGONAL GAME? R U GONNA MAKE ANOTHER FUCKING RUNESCAPE OR SOMETHING?
Great tutorial. Helped me learn the layout and hotkeys very quickly however, I have a really big problem with my copy of Maya 8.5 Personal learning edition. I only get about half of the workspace and the rest is cut out. Is there a way of sorting this out? Cheers :)

maya's interface is dull, boring and lots of icons that makes it confusing, a complete turn-off, XSI's interface in the other hand is waaaaaaay ahead and more intuitive.
It's just a tool. Different users like different ways of doing things. When you get down to it, inside of Maya you can customize it any way you want. For instance if you hit ctrl+space it will completely get rid of all of the icons and confusing clutter. That's how I work most of the time because I agree with you, it does get confusing. :P
Whenever i create an object in maya 8 using polygon it allways appears in wireframe mode, even if i put object when clicked in right mouse button or whatever. It just allways stays in wireframe. Is there anything im missing ?? please help if u can :p
Pretty sweet. I got the Personal Learning Edition quite a few months ago and was toying with it but never could really get things to work. Thanks for the overview, great intro.
i want a good introduction tutorial. does anybody know where i can find one? this was so friggin complicated, the guy assumed i knew way more than i know. i thought this was very very poor
i the main difference was they'd set out the menus differently...but basically it stayed the same. however the latest version is supposed to have a new imbuilt muscle system which should be worth upgrading for!
In Maya 2008 there are a few features that I especially like. Like how in NURBS if you hit 3 you get a smoothed version of your NURBS surface you can now do the same in polygons to give you a preview of the smooth outcome. It uses a different algorithm but what it shows is very close. Good alternative and time saver than smoothing and undoing every time. Maybe not work all that money though. :P
awesome video. i have a question though. i bought a book and am trying to build a church. the book tells me to choose Edit Mesh and then Exrude. i've looked everywhere and can't understand/find where those keys are. please help im lost!-Ian also if you can email me that would be terrific. just email me on youtube. thank you very much-Ian
Just wanted to add that you can press ctrl+spacebar to go in and out of a sort of "expert" mode where it instantly cleans up all of the UI elements and give you a lot of real estate to work with.
When I model I like to stay in expert mode and use the hotbox to access all the functions.
Very nice tutorial, thanks very much. I just downloaded the student trial version of Maya because I need to learn to model (my level design career won't go anywhere otherwise :P) and you really helped me get into it.
We're glad you liked it! If you're interested in level design you should check out our "Advanced Level Design" DVD. You can find it in the "Products" section of our website.
Maya is a great place to start modeling characters and props but most of the actual level is built within the video game engine. For example, the Source engine has the Hammer Level Editor, the Crytek engine has Sandbox etc. Good luck with the 3D and stick with it!!
Heh, funny, you just mentioned both of the tools I'm currently using. Hammer mostly uses brushwork, so Maya is almost irrelevant for creating anything but props, but the CryEngine 2 relies almost entirely on 3D models for buildings.
My professor introduced me to Zbrush the other day... and boy is it great! REALLY useful way of keeping that poly count low, just like the art directors like it!!!^^ Works really well with gaming... although many companies don't use Zbrush, or Maya! These tools are just starting to "surface" in the gaming industry. I know Final Fantasy 13 was all done using MAYA, and they used Zbrush in Assassin's Creed!!! It's only a matter of time before these tools take over ^^
Glad we could help a little bit. For more advanced Maya tutorials be sure to check out both the "Character Design and Integration with Half-Life 2 and Maya" and "Custom Props and Animation for Source Powered Games with Maya" training DVDs from Noesis Interactive!
thanks for the tutorial .
it helped me a lot

Any long term Maya users know if it's worth it to upgrade from Maya 8 to 8.5 or 2008?
I'm just learning Maya 8 now and I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time learning on "outdated" version 8.
I'm basically modeling in Maya 8 and planning to export my models to Zbrush 3.1.
