The word 'blue' in this context is a play-on-words from 'blues' which was a mellow genre of music. If you say somebody is 'blue' it usually refers to them being depressed, and 'blues' music usually featured lyrics about discrimination against black Americans in the early part of the 20th Century. The genre was a big influence on Jazz and Miles Davis.
Some once said...I can't quote this verbatim but it's near enough: 'Most jazz musicians play like they're grasping a glass of whisky, Miles plays like he's stroking a Ming vase'. Can anyone give me the exact quote and / or tell me who said it. How true, by the way.
I had never heard of this untl tonight after I had purchased a couple of jazz CD compliations. A friend who was with me told me about KIND OF BLUE and said I HAD to get/hear the original. It is very nice (from what I hear here). Thanks
Yes it is. All CD versions starting with the 1992 Mastersound edition are in the correct speed. The recent Classic records LP reissues are also correct.
Great. Now Ive got a question. I also have the 6 eye Davis...have a couple of them. How do I know if they're first pressings??? I have trouble knowing. Could you help me please.
Hi crooner2007, my name is Raphael, and I'm Brazilian. First, this album is pretty amazing. Thanks for putting the original LP. Second, I'd like to know from you if the word "blue" is a slang in the context of the album title or it is just the color itself.
It's a little bit of both. But I'm sure Miles wanted the mood of the album to evoke the traditional Blues form. Blues is an important influence in Jazz.
I find whistleing this haunting tune helpful to to my spirit. Worked very well in the tunnel lof New Haven station.(CT, USA, appended as a kindness for foreign readers).
Nice tiles, good bounce. Fewer folks, better acoustics. Some Mozart works; most doesn't; same w/ Miles. Thanks for getting this great work posted.
I don't want to sound like digital technology is bad, specially because we all know the digital era has been a continuous (r)evolution. That said: my goodness, I am convinced the sound of the CD is not as nearly as rich as the LP, particularly in a case like this where recording engineers were using the best of the best in terms of mics and equipment. Listen to the timbres: all frequencies are there, but there is more, there is an extra layer that brings an incredible depth to the sound. Bravo!
50 years have already past, but what is the best jazz record ever can't get old, it's such an eternal reason to be grateful for! It caresses my spirit and soul. This is some of the best music ever written and performed in centuries.
This is why sharing works - I've heard this recording before but never with that true sound you remember from raiding your parents LP case. I understand this is a rarity I can't pretend to know entirely but thank you for giving me insight.
Thanks for the comment. This is a classic, and most probably the most recognizable jazz tune of all time. Loved by pretty much everybody. It crosses musical boundaries!
You must get it, and when you get it, could you please do that with the christmas lights blinking behind the platter the only way to listen to that album, you would really make my day!!! Thank You so much!!!!
I have the cd but as we all know VINYL is better!! You have some really nice lps! Do you have "Love Unlimited Orchestra" "My Musical Bouquet" a Great Lp!! It will test your system to the lowest lows to the high string section, a must have!!!
Thanks for your kind comments. I don't have the record, but I will check it out. So far, the most dynamic records I have are, of all things, the early Soundstream digital derived Telarcs. They have subterranean lows, amazing crescendos and superb imaging.
This is a good album. I was wondering if you knew anything about the actual label. A long time ago, I came across a promo pressing of this same record. It has the Columbia label on it, but it has a white background w/ black lettering on it. How many different pressings of this record exist? Is that a blue vinyl pressing of 'Kind of Blue' I see in the background? That Dave Brubeck is killer too.
Of the six eye, you have the deep groove version on both regular black/red/white and white/black promo. There's a later Six Eye, non deep groove, with "CBS" on the 12 o' clock position. All sound superb.
Yeah, I posted some pics of the blue vinyl version release by Classic Records in 2003. Those have become collectible as well.
Incidentally, this video is in stereo sound, which is not easy to do, specially now with certain YouTube processing changes. Enjoy!
Agreed. That's what I heard about posting the videos. If interested, I can send you scans and pics of the one I have. The album cover of mine looks like the one at 2:01-2:17 into the video and the record label looks similar to the one at 0:48-1:06 into the video. However, mine is a demonstration copy w/ only black/white. It can even be that someone changed the album cover. Nonetheless, it's still a gem in its own. I wonder what that reel to reel deck @ 1:07-1:24 into the video is all about?
I could've figured that's what it was. I just wanted to ask to be sure. It's hard to believe this great Jazz album is almost 50 years old. Maybe next year a 50th anniv. release will be available from SONY Legacy. Thanks for letting me know. Keep up the good work.
saw a copy of this at the flea market once. six eyes and all. $3. didn't buy it cause the cover was bad. STUPIDSTUPIDSTUPIDSTUPIDSTUPID

Does anybody know what time Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane play? I still can't distinguish the altosax from a tenor >.<
noasthings 1 year ago
@noasthings John Coltrane appears on minute 3:25. The sound of the tenor sax is more full bodied. He's on the left channel of the stereo mix.
Cannonball solos at minute 5:13 and appears on the right channel.
Hope this helps!

Is this the version that's off pitch? The liner notes to the CD issue say that the vinyl edition was too fast or too slow, i can't remember.

They should have the deep groove on the record label and the dead wax should read 1A, 1B, 1C, 1AB, etc. 1A's could be expensive.

Thank you very much. I'm in luck then.
