This is one of those games that's seriously fun even for modern gamers, and has graphics "good enough" that you don't realise it's a PS1. It is the best R-Type game hands down; this is arcade action at its very finest. Not played Final, but I doubt it can beat Delta...

So if you have a PS2/PS3 (or any device with a PS1 emulator), then get this now!!! It even has "achievements" long before most other games adopted them, although many are very hard to get :)

I recall another side scrolling shooter for the PSOne released in the same year as R Type Delta (I think). Very simlar, albeit a little less dystopian with not much of a 'Streets of Rage' feel to it.

This game is still pretty epic, even graphically its still bearable. I have it on Ps3 via the Japanese Store. I also own Einhander and I rate Delta to be superior.

Probably my fave horizontal shooter.

It sadly has become ultra-rare and usually sells for $40-60 unless you're lucky. What's worse for American PS fans is that Sony hasn't shown any intent to release it on the PSOne Classics store online, even though it's been out in Japan for some time.

You should certainly at least play the game. There are already enough money-grubbing EBay insects out there who spend all their time trying to turn profits on old games instead of, well, playing the fucking things. For fans of shmups, I've heard that this game is particularly amazing to play. I just bought a near-mint copy from somebody for $35 with no case/booklet. I intend to play the game until I've mastered it (and since it's R-Type, this will likely take the rest of my life to accomplish!).

I'm always suprised to see no RX love on these videos - I'd pick that ship over the other three any day.

It looks cool and quirky (I LIKE the pink canopy!), it has the best lasers, its force hunts the enemies for you, the Depth Bomb is powerful and the Burst Cannon has more destructive potential R9s Energy Bolt or R13s Lightning - whats not to love? :-)

It depends entirely on your play style. I don't like the RX very much. I think the weapons are difficult to use and the homing capability of the Force throws me sometimes because it won't do what I want. I can't use the R13 at all. Neither ship is bad; they're both great in the right hands.

I have a lot of love for the R9. It's very versatile, and I love the classic play.
