@NsOSnipSU how about wildlife photographers, bird photography seems to come to mind over most else. not to mention, shooting large untamed predatory animals up close can be a very risky and life altering thing to do. Put a 2x extender on a F4 lens and there you have it, F8.
I guess good info about something you have not seen or used in person? I gues that breaksdown to speculation about speculation. Kinda like me describing your wanker without actually seeing it....
@thatnikonguy Good on you, Matt, not rising to this empty wagon's bait. Frankly, sounds like he's fishing for an invitation to see your wanker. Not how I flirt, but what the heck! Guess everyone has a different kink, right?
Also, for those of you complaining about the resolution: there is the D800/D800E for that now, to replace the D3X. It's 36 mp. And for video these two new Nikons are putting the Canons to shame, as they now have live headphone outputs and some really great crop modes.
Doesn't matter which of these are better, everyone already pre-ordered a Nikon D800 or 800E today! Heh.
Anyway, the D4 is sure to be the new low light king, and according to Nikon, this camera's auto focus in the dark completely blows anything made before out of the water, it's not just a small improvement. The built-in wireless in the D4 also sounds great, no more hotshoe flash controllers. And it also lets you upload to an FTP server while you shoot so you can clear the CF card as you go.
@MrSonday I found this rather informative. He is comparing two extremely high spec camera bodies which necessitates a long video. It's your comment which is wasting room on the internet, not this video. I suspect you know nothing about photography and are simply commenting out of frustration as you have no idea what most of what he says actually means.
Comparing cameras on spec sheets alone. Useless video. I can read two pages of spec on my own. Sorry but just save your effort for when you have had the chance to use both of them.
Nikon D4 has an advantage over Canon, Nikon allows uncompressed output via HDMI while canon doesn't. Also Both Canon and Nikon have merged their top of the line segment into one top-end camera instead of two separate cameras. Both are too expensive for me. I will save my money for good glass.
Canon 1D is 5 YEARS AWAY from NIKON d4 ! See better and HONEST pro reviews at nikond4price. com and you'll see that they are not even a "match"! BOOM! (love the coupons in that site as well!! lol)
My experience with Canon has been that their specs have always been really good, but they don't live up to them and perform poorly in comparison, the bodies are also seem to be made very inexpensively. Nikon lives up to the specs, and has a very nice strong build.
@Ullimately yes but the d4 is a low light monster with its crazy high ISO that blows the d3x out of the water. They are both pro cameras two is for low light and the other is for massive prints.
@thestevo893dude the D5100 also goes to 100k+ ISO level but for me personally that is of no interest. I am rather looking for low ISO levels, more detail and less noise for big prints.
@Ullimately You can upres any quality file. When I was shooting a display booth - essentially a small billboard size that would be viewed from just a couple of meters away, even using the D3x I was upresing over 200%. For a normal bill board you can print it from a 10mp file easily.
@thatnikonguy sometimes I get agitated looking at those billboard where people have expanded their photos to double or triple of the original size resulting in a lot of visible colour noise. I am talking about life size people and if it can be done from a 10mp pic easily I am asking myself for what I have that 40 mp Aptus-II 8 back for my Hasselblad.
@Ullimately I 've been a photographer for 25 years, and one of my first digital cameras was a D2h and it made very reasonable enlargements. As you should know, it was only a 4.1 mega pixel camera! The cameras in question are both full frame, a larger sensor, than that of an aps-c sensor. You should also know , as you claim to have a Hasselblad, that sensor size in relation to pixel count accounts for the larger part of the equation.Pixels act as big buckets (metaphor) to collect light.
@bmecalgaryPut to many on a small sensor, they cant collect as much light as the same number of pixels on a larger sensor. The law of diminishing returns comes into play at some point.
@bmecalgaryThere is much dispute just what that point is, but I have printed, professionally, poster size prints off of a 12 megapixel camera many times with results that I am confident very few people could contest the pixel count of the camera.
@bmecalgary It comes down to a good exposure and a good sensor and who are we kidding anything Nikon or Cannon has developed in the professional segment exceeds the ability of some who have the cash to acquire them. There are a lot of dough heads here that claim many things and it's easy to see the ones who simply don't understand. I guess a definition of poster size would be in order.
@bmecalgary 17x24 is poster size, are you saying you can't achieve that with the cameras in question? If not, well...... in my mind I don't think you're a credible source of information!
@bmecalgary Both cameras can easily print larger than anything most people, who buy the camera, would want. Remember the market their developed for. Your Hasselblad is a very different beast! It has a much larger sensor, therefore the pixels are bigger, giving it better resolution. Disagree?
@bmecalgary My first digital camera was from Agfa. It didnt focus and I got 640x480px out of it. I did some nice macros with it using a watch makers lens in front of it.
In any case the D4 should have continued where the D3Xstopped, with 24.5mp. They could have gotten high iso out of it by using 24.5mp for ISO up to 6400 and for high iso values they could have switched to 12.1mp. That way they could probably have gotten ISO 307200 out of it.
@Ullimately Dude, almost no one really needs more then 10Mpix even for prints. Almost all computer displays are less then two megapixels. Low light sensitivity and dynamic range matter way more then the megapixel count. Megapixels are not a way .of counting a cameras picture quality...
@thatnikonguy I would say the Canon has the advantage in video just based on precedent, Canon's video has been drastically superior to Nikon's on every camera to date. as EX canon user i go for the D4, see the HD promotion movie and you will freak out... specs is 1 thing... material quality another... main reason to switch to Nikon
@WaWoWieWa Have u ever heard of Canon 5D Mark II which is 3 years old and produces equally if not better HD video than Nikon D4. Oh and did I mention it is widely used in TV shows and some movies. 3 years old!!!!! and alot lot cheaper than Nikon D4. Nikon D4 video modes have nothing new for Canon users, new only for Nikon users.
just found out a pretty cool feature on the 1dx when it comes to video. i guess when your recording video the wheel on the back will become touch sensitive so no more clicking sounds in your vids
10 to 20 cross-type AF points at f/4, and 15 to 21 cross-type AF points at f/5.6. (The number of cross-type AF points will differ depending on the lens.)
No need to say one is better than the other. They match up evenly enough that it does't even matter. Just stick to the brand you're already using. Arguing over it and nitpicking at this stage is stupid. I'm a Canon user and even though it shows that the Canon is slightly better on paper I know that it honestly doesn't matter. Chill out everyone
@Synnergy08 Indeed Nikon makes rational decisions, where as Canon makes decisions based on marketing. Canon wants to claim 14 FPS (very crippled; af+ae locked and only jpg), where as Nikon did what was important made a 110 frame RAW buffer, where the 1D-X's RAW buffer is a measly 36 frames.
Also the 1D-X native ISO 51200 is just marketing hype.
@thelegoplokoon Every generation gets better - early 5mp cameras were terrible at 400. Now 12mp is awesome up to 12,800! In time, 100mp at a million ISO will be possible, in time.
@thelegoplokoon if you've been paying attention, both companies released a "one-fer" type body and kept MP at 16, 18 (nikon, canon). I was in the same boat and glad they didn't go much higher than that "magical" 12MP rating.
What about the uncompressed video from Nikon. Really, u missed the most important point + to elaborate on the true advantages of the crop mod. Hoe about the connectivity of the Nikon and I am a Canon fanboy...what u really did was just read and compared the specs.
When you do a head-to head please test their low light shooting ability. Though, with the 1D-X's max native ISO of 51,200 probably betters the D4 up to 12,800 and beyond. I was hoping the D800 would have more native ISO...making it a D4 in a smaller camera body (minus a few pro features). Will the 5D3 have good low light shooting ability? Or will it be a studio camera?
I'm not sure if this is right, but it's my opinion: I think Canon is a brand that makes rational decisions, they just make sense. They don't stick a +18MP sensor into a camera that doesn't need one. They're burst rates are fast, but who needs 11 fps like the Nikon offers? I think nikon just tries to make the camera specs higher than Canon, without thinking of the cons and problems. I'd say Nikon just offers stuff people don't necessarily need. Just my opinion. I like Canon's 50mm f/1.2L though.
@oinkoinkschwein Having 2 MP less is a GOOD thing. It makes for better dynamic range, IQ and noise-performance. Yes the 1D-X can shoot 14 fps with AF and AE locked, and ONLY in jpg. The more important fact is that the 1D-X's buffer is capped at 36 frames RAW, whereas the D4 will do 110 frames RAW.
The three comments below me are terrible to read, it looks like they have tried to type as fast as possible and missed out crucial parts of each sentence that would help it make sense lol. It would be understandable if they were 9 years old.
@speckyprick My theory is that rikkinadir2 has a fixation of numbers and, due to the high volume of number trafficing (illegal in 100% of the internet) in their comments, I demand justice in the form of them being "thumbed down". You hear me, rikkinadir2? Consider yourself vertically thumb challenged!
New D4 is right way ahead for Nikon!! It has "only" 16,1 MPix, but this is very satisfactory for semi-pro users in combination with much better qualities of sensor, most at poor light conditions, for example taking photos at night. Already Nikon D3s have assumed this right way and his endurance at poor light conditions has been exceptional. I think, that D4 has developed this philosophy and that is the right way ! :-) I hope for good bulid quality of the new Nikon and then its alright.
@rikkinadir2 16,1 MP is in no way shape or form a low number for an ISO machine like this. I'm thrilled Nikon didn't go 18 MP like Canon, as it would mean worse ISO performance, IQ and Dynamic range.
@ramanmono By my belief this higer resolution is needed, with top glasses like Zeiss and high requred formats on publishing is 34MPix almost neccesary. But I have idea, that eventually D4x has came after D800/D900 - similarity with releasing D3 and D700, after that D3x and then D3s for much better sensitivity and lower noise for taking night photos. At this discipline (for example) has my D700 big problems with noise and picture artefacts at exposures about 10 minutes...
@ramanmono And more probably will be resolution of D4x twiced D4, which means about 32,2 Mpix. By my opinion. Fact, that D4 will have been 16,1 MPix have rumored about almost 2 years after release D3s (lower noise, much sensitivity, stop pursuit for high resolutin, etc.), altough many said that will be 34-36 Mpix in the near past at 12/2011, in the end will D4 have 16,1 MPix come true with my long expects :-))
@ramanmono So what about us pros shooting on location? What about shooting lifestyle work where the models are in "action" such as playing University Volley Ball or track? There is so much use for a pro high res body outside of the studio that it isn't even funny. The reason people don't use one, is only because one doesn't exist. The D3x is too slow, and the 1DIII could use a healthy update. There is no question whether or not a pro, fast, high res body is needed in the field.
Isn't it amazing how photography go to this point without all this geekery? I'm a Nikon user with a D700 (formerly D70, D200 and D300) and I don't see anything here that makes me want to spend umpteen thousand pounds just to buy a new "toy". These pieces of kit are for the pros. Few amateurs will ever get their money's worth, so I'll probably pass on this one.
Who cares about the slight difference in specs? When the two cameras get compared side by side the Nikon will take better pictures, just like last generation. Unless your shooting sports as your profession, buy Nikon.
D4 is a cross between a D7000 and a D3s with FX sensor ,ppl who have a D3 and really need an upgrade should go for the more video marketed D4 ,as for me (still photography) I'll wait to see what a D700 or D3x's upgrade is in bag
Canon still meters in black n white while the Nikon 3D matrix metering is in color ,that is the major plus point to Nikon beside better glass and in camera LCA correction and Nikon tries to retain more detail on high ISO while Canon losses detail trying to suppress noise
Thanks for the great comparison. The price is a little out of my range $6,000.00 for Nikon. Its always nice to dream, but for now I will have to stick with my D5100 that does a excellent job.
I feel Nikon D4 is ready for Press, sports photographers taking their industry needs....ready to export the content to net which means a lot for them....and the fact being this one is aiming at the Olympics and even the feature of controlling the unit or multiple units with a ipod is great for many pro shooters....And the illuminated buttons and multiple crops still and video shooting and the improved RGB sensor are like icing on the cake ! i am getting it once it is out :)
The Nikon D4 has a clean HDMI output for video now this could be a game changer for videographers as none of the current DSLR's have clean HDMI out. This could also be a much affordable competitor to the Canon C300 and the RED Sacrlet-X.
@green235 its gonna be hard almost imposible to beat canon at dslr video and the 1dx is not gonna be the top dslr for video they make i beleave the 5d mark 3 will be better and ive heard that they have a 4k eos dslr comming to.
it really does not matter canon/nikon we are all gonna be happy and be able to use are tools in new ways i have the 1dx on pre order and will be doing my first unboxing video on it also field test like landscape/sports/studio and im sure matt will be hitting up the d4 for sure.
Most people don't know this but I know film makers who are going to buy the 1DX to make 10K video. They'll use the 1Dx at 12fps to film video and up it 24fps. Essentially 10x the resolution of 1080p
@michaelhtvr yup your right and both are gonna be awsome but there are other things that make these cam's awsome like the person behind them shooting the pics and the glass in front. the body's by them selfs cant do anything

It looks like the canon is 'better' but as you said bumbing the iso doesn't mean the shots are going to be clean and since nikon is famous for the good ISO i think the D4 wins there. Can't wait for your d4 videos.
The best thing said was,"Let's be fair they will both be great cameras."

WaWoWieWa 1 month ago
@WaWoWieWa Have u ever heard of Canon 5D Mark II which is 3 years old and produces equally if not better HD video than Nikon D4. Oh and did I mention it is widely used in TV shows and some movies. 3 years old!!!!! and alot lot cheaper than Nikon D4. Nikon D4 video modes have nothing new for Canon users, new only for Nikon users.

Canon 1Dx is a beast!! Win for Canon. Whopping 61 AF points with 41!!!! crosstypes in 1Dx compared to 51 AF points with only 15 crosstypes in D4.
daas8214 1 month ago 2
@daas8214
no, i read this online. for Canon 1Dx ....
1 to 5 cross-type AF points at f/2.8

High megapixel usual leads to bad low light and bad color so I hope cannon and Nikon won't go much higher
thelegoplokoon 1 month ago 5
@thelegoplokoon Every generation gets better - early 5mp cameras were terrible at 400. Now 12mp is awesome up to 12,800! In time, 100mp at a million ISO will be possible, in time.
thatnikonguy 1 month ago 2
@thatnikonguy No lens on earth can resolute 100MP on 35mm film.
uhohoverflow 1 month ago
@thelegoplokoon if you've been paying attention, both companies released a "one-fer" type body and kept MP at 16, 18 (nikon, canon). I was in the same boat and glad they didn't go much higher than that "magical" 12MP rating.

What about the uncompressed video from Nikon. Really, u missed the most important point + to elaborate on the true advantages of the crop mod. Hoe about the connectivity of the Nikon and I am a Canon fanboy...what u really did was just read and compared the specs.

Also, please test the 1D-X and D4 AF tracking. Which does a better job?
AGC828 1 month ago
When you do a head-to head please test their low light shooting ability. Though, with the 1D-X's max native ISO of 51,200 probably betters the D4 up to 12,800 and beyond. I was hoping the D800 would have more native ISO...making it a D4 in a smaller camera body (minus a few pro features). Will the 5D3 have good low light shooting ability? Or will it be a studio camera?

@AGC828 It's just numbers. Despite having the same maximum native ISO setting, the D4 should have around a stop better ISO performance than the D3s.
The fact that the Canon 1D-X is able to go to ISO 51200 natively does not nessecerily mean that it will produce less noise than the D4.

Wait for the dxo sensor measurements and see if canon has caught up or not. They have been behind for a long time.
DesignVisStudios 1 month ago
I'm not sure if this is right, but it's my opinion: I think Canon is a brand that makes rational decisions, they just make sense. They don't stick a +18MP sensor into a camera that doesn't need one. They're burst rates are fast, but who needs 11 fps like the Nikon offers? I think nikon just tries to make the camera specs higher than Canon, without thinking of the cons and problems. I'd say Nikon just offers stuff people don't necessarily need. Just my opinion. I like Canon's 50mm f/1.2L though.
yuasahil 1 month ago
@yuasahil I think your wrong.
Look at the specs of the Nikon and than the Canon:
Nikon 'only' 16 Megapixels and Canon will have 18.
Canon is still trying to improve customers bei high specs.
The 1Dx can shoot 14fps with mirror up.
They're pushing themselfe up.
But Canon still has and will have higher megapixels.
oinkoinkschwein 1 month ago
@oinkoinkschwein Having 2 MP less is a GOOD thing. It makes for better dynamic range, IQ and noise-performance. Yes the 1D-X can shoot 14 fps with AF and AE locked, and ONLY in jpg. The more important fact is that the 1D-X's buffer is capped at 36 frames RAW, whereas the D4 will do 110 frames RAW.
DinosaursOnceRuled 1 month ago
@yuasahil If that was the case, then why was the D3 an industry game changer?

New D4 is right way ahead for Nikon!! It has "only" 16,1 MPix, but this is very satisfactory for semi-pro users in combination with much better qualities of sensor, most at poor light conditions, for example taking photos at night. Already Nikon D3s have assumed this right way and his endurance at poor light conditions has been exceptional. I think, that D4 has developed this philosophy and that is the right way ! :-) I hope for good bulid quality of the new Nikon and then its alright.
rikkinadir2 1 month ago
@rikkinadir2 16,1 MP is in no way shape or form a low number for an ISO machine like this. I'm thrilled Nikon didn't go 18 MP like Canon, as it would mean worse ISO performance, IQ and Dynamic range.

D4X will probably won't be released, because the D800 will be the new high res model (34MP). And there isn't much need for a full body studio camera.
ramanmono 1 month ago 14
@ramanmono interesting - you may be right, I think they will go another direction though.
thatnikonguy 1 month ago
@ramanmono By my belief this higer resolution is needed, with top glasses like Zeiss and high requred formats on publishing is 34MPix almost neccesary. But I have idea, that eventually D4x has came after D800/D900 - similarity with releasing D3 and D700, after that D3x and then D3s for much better sensitivity and lower noise for taking night photos. At this discipline (for example) has my D700 big problems with noise and picture artefacts at exposures about 10 minutes...
rikkinadir2 1 month ago
@ramanmono And more probably will be resolution of D4x twiced D4, which means about 32,2 Mpix. By my opinion. Fact, that D4 will have been 16,1 MPix have rumored about almost 2 years after release D3s (lower noise, much sensitivity, stop pursuit for high resolutin, etc.), altough many said that will be 34-36 Mpix in the near past at 12/2011, in the end will D4 have 16,1 MPix come true with my long expects :-))
rikkinadir2 1 month ago

I feel Nikon D4 is ready for Press, sports photographers taking their industry needs....ready to export the content to net which means a lot for them....and the fact being this one is aiming at the Olympics and even the feature of controlling the unit or multiple units with a ipod is great for many pro shooters....And the illuminated buttons and multiple crops still and video shooting and the improved RGB sensor are like icing on the cake ! i am getting it once it is out :)
komalkumarputtu 1 month ago
The Nikon D4 has a clean HDMI output for video now this could be a game changer for videographers as none of the current DSLR's have clean HDMI out. This could also be a much affordable competitor to the Canon C300 and the RED Sacrlet-X.

Most people don't know this but I know film makers who are going to buy the 1DX to make 10K video. They'll use the 1Dx at 12fps to film video and up it 24fps. Essentially 10x the resolution of 1080p

The NIkon D4 is two cameras in one camera for still photos. For video, the Nikon D4 is three cameras in one camera, all able to use 1080p!!
The Nikon D4 metering is likely better, as it was already very good in previous iterations!
The flash system in Nikon is better than what Canon has.
For the Canon 1DX compared to the Nikon D4, the higher MP, higher fps, and especially higher focus points do not matter at all!!
Having said that, the Canon 1DX should be a great camera.
