one question about teramoto's hiki men. his left fist is almost underneath his right elbow, at the very right position of his chest. Is it really a good way to use a katana? it's a solid shinai strike, true; a good katana cut? i don't know. i would appreciate some opinions about this.
I wouldn't go quite as far to say that the referees were terrible. Looking at Park's hikimen, the shimpan might've thought that it was a little shallow and not quite with the monouchi or that it was too far down on Teramoto's head for it to be a good yoko-men. Teramoto's hiki-men was solid, right on the center, and completely with the monuchi.
I was scoring the points in the "chart" (don't know if the name is right) of the court A (final match court) and I can say that Park's hikimen was to be ippon. I saw, earlier that day, some other hikimens like Park's one that the referees had counted as ippon.
I could see that the referees do not score ippon against japaneses unless it is very clear!
Teramoto's men was perfect.
5:07 counter by Park was too deep on the shinai. Not for ippon.
Impressive counter at 5:07 by Park but unfortunately I do not think it was done with the monouchi (the front 1/3 of the shinai) or so the Judges decided and hence no ippon. Teramoto was just too close by the time Park struck. Just a point I would like to add to this discussion. Exciting shiai, I would be happy just to have the level of concentration displayed by both contestants here.
A very balanced match! Both players displayed good seme, but also very cautious and aware that the SLIGHTEST distraction would be disastrous. Notice the way Teramoto breaks away from tsuba-zeriai: ducking and pointing the shinai at Park's throat. This match may not be one of the most exciting ever, but it displays the great class and skill level of both players....
The final hiki-men by Teramoto may be debatable but the counter-men by Park at 5:07 is obviously an ippon - can't believe any judges can miss that...very disappointing.
actually, if you listen carefully you can hear the shinai clash, so it doesn't seem to be that clear. On the other hand, the men strike seems to be very close to Teramoto, which might have been interpreted by the shinpan as too close and, therefore, on the wrong portion of the shinai...
Very debatable shiai, indeed. I don't think there's any foul play though, in fact I think Teramoto deserved the win. Maybe not with the ippon he was given, but still...
6:55 - Teramoto's men. A little short, but quite confident.
8:01 - Teramoto's hiki-men. I thought this was perfect when watching the clip by other person, but in this clip, it seems to be a bit blocked by Park's shinai and the hit was made on off the center, right side (same as Park's previous hiki-men)
All in all, great match. For Park, there'll be a better chance as he is only 24-year old yet. Cant' wait to see a team match tomorrow!!!

6:24>>
Why is white hiki-men no use?
It is because he did not have strength as he can cut it.
When he beat, he had a hesitation.
Therefore he became hiki-men which had weak power.
8:01>>
His red hiki-men has strength to be able to cut.

Actually, nowadays, the monouchi is the 1/4 of the blade

i think 5:07 counter men deserves an ippon, a very inpressive strike. 5:33 kote seemed to have hit teramoto's tsuba. i don't like both hiki mens.

hm...judges... what can we say...
shame on this....
teramoto also know that was ippon
it;s not a player's fault...they all did good job.
Who is Next referee?

I do personally like Mr.Teramoto.
He's a great kendo player..
I was expecting him to be the champ or 2nd at least before the match started
But in these semi-final and final matches...
I really can't say I could be on his side.
I am very dissapointed with the Judges here.

Park is so strong! But teramoto seems to be more focused in doing one single decisive blow

5:07 - Park's counter-men. Personally, I think this should've been a score.
5:33 - Park's kote. Zhansin wasn't perfect.
6:25 - Park's hiki-men. Good skill (delayed and waited Teramoto's return), but a bit off to the right side of the head.

I was hoping Japan would win, but that men was obviously blocked... I think Park deserved the title here...
KiyohikoD 2 years ago
no it wasn't blocked, it just seems like that.
but you can see clearly that Park put up his hands after Teramoto hit men. just watch it like 1000 times in repeat^^
then you'll see, I think.

There's a spelling error, it says "Terayama", instead, it should say "Teramoto"

This was a pretty long match with not much action during encho. Somebody has already posted the full match, so you could check that one out.
