Gilmour just makes anything sound good because he's got so much emotion that it rubs off onto the listeners. Clapton just rips the guitar and shreds. That's kind of how I view them. They're both amazing in their own unique ways.
imo Clapton is incredible, Gilmour is incredible. AS presviously posted, 2 songs is not enough. Had I developed this w/ only 2 songs I would have chose crossroads for EC and for Gilmour echoes. Presently I have been working on ALL Oinkfloyds (not a typo I love the pig) stuff, built a Gilmour strat to exact spec, and the Clapton signature strat would have been much easier. Both have Jammed w/ the best of the best IE: BB king, SIR Paul, the list goes on. To ask me to decide between the 2? I cant!
some songs are dust, woman of a thousand years, and bob welch's future games includes a fine danny kirwan solo. earl grey, sunny side of heaven are 2 nice instrumentals.his solo work showcases his singing and songwriting , and the live fleetwood mac sessions are on many cd's including boston blues, and bbc sessions.
A simple 2 song comparison is not good enough. These two giants play the stratocaster better than 99.99% of players in general. They each have their own approach to soloing, because their music styles are diverse. I have heard both live, and I can say there are times when Eric just creates some beautiful solos that rival David Gilmour's solos. For just pure rock beauty, David wins. For blues, and blues-rock, Eric wins. In my humble opinion! Thanks for the post!
everyone on earth knows these two , david is more likely to generate loving tears, eric has a different blissful love and emotion, but i prefer danny kirwan , and both of these giants would understand. kirwan's love is beyond the infinite
everyone on earth knows these two , david is more likely to generate loving tears, eric has a different blissful love and emotion, but i prefer to danny kirwan , and both of these giants would understand. kirwan's love is beyond the infinite
i think they are both great and are important in rock history. Clapton just blew the scene when he came in with the yardbirds, john mayall, cream, blind faith derek, solo. He is one of the best blues rock and important in rock n roll dna. But for me David just blows my mind and just gives me goosebumbs and be like shit how is he doing that? how does he bend those notes so much, he guitar work really does take you to space. I think david is better and his strat sounds amazing!
Clapton can hit 32nd flourishes like no one's business and I believe he is still the king of clean chops but, david is just so good. Dave knows how to populate a measure with as little as possible while saying as much as he can. Case in point, the another brick in the wall solo. There are licks that consist of a single bend, a couple of trucks, and a few quarters here and there. It's the kind of complicated minimalism that clapton just can't replicate.

I have listened to all of Gilmours solos a thousand times or better on ALL of his stuff... solo work.. PF stuff.. guest star stuff.. but this particular solo on Pulse is his very best .. enough to make you cry.. and that is saying a hell of alot for someone as talented as he is.. Clapton is great as well.. but does he ever make you cry when he plays? Nope.. think not! If an artist can reach in and bring tears to your eyes.. he wins!
The thing about Clapton is he did his best on drugs unfortunately. The Cream-Blind Faith years to be exact. D & The Dominoes was all Duane. But if you listen to Eric today, it's rather tame and not IN YOU FACE Gilmour has actually matured and like a fine wine. He has a very very distinct sound and unlike Clapton. I firmly believe Clapton would loose if they both had a Guitar War. Jimi was The 60's,Blackmore 70's, Clapton 80's Gilmour from there on is The King Of Stratocaster land
Power tube saturation is awesome!!! Thumbs up if you have any idea what I'm talking about (P.S. Gilmour and Clapton both utilize the aforementioned power tube saturation.)
Clapton's music reaches a visceral part of your being in a very intense way. Gilmour on the other hand, enraptures your entire being as we all become Comfortably Numb in eloquence and in a stately manner of sort.
I believe Eric might have to stand on his mothers shoulders just to kiss Davids butt. I have listened to both for years and Clapton has his moments BUT, David Gilmour`s moment started the first time he picked up a guitar and has never stopped.Of course this is just my personal opinion, what say you?
clapton is a faster more knowledgeable player where as gilmour takes his time with a lot of bends and drawn out solos! Id have to say clapton has his own style and so does gilmour but i love both of them but id have to say clapton is quite a bit better!
@geoff101001 I would tend to disagree. I think that they are both very knowledgeable players, though Clapton is more steeped in the blues than Gilmour. With regards to Clapton's speed, it only presents itself when he is playing cliched lines that he has rehearsed to death. A guitarist can employ speed all he likes, but if he simply plays the same three note phrases repeatedly, it sounds infantile. Gilmour is simply a more musically adventurous soloist with a languid style. (My opinion only)
This comparison is so stupid. Clapton's solos are almost always improvisational, while Gilmours are not. Clapton is just a true blues man, he would never play the same solo over and over again, whats the point in that!
@spiffication i never said they said they were exactly the same, im just saying their pretty similiar each time. Don't get me wrong, I love david gilmour and i think he's amazing, Im just trying to point out that clapton's and gilmours styles are completely different
Gilmour is #1. But wait... on second thought Eric is #1 ...but then again David is the best... so he is #1... But Eric is the greatest ... so Eric is #1. Eric - David - Eric - David - Eric - David -Eric...David - - oh hell.
Why bother comparing. Combined, they'd be the best guitar player. I think skill wise, Clapton may have an edge. Don't get me wrong, it hurts me to say it being such a huge Floyd fan, but Gilmour seems to have the ability to select the very best notes in a beautiful untouched way. But for me personally, I'll take Gilmour bending one note over Claptons fretting anyday....
In his Cream incarnation, people were often spotted carrying banners reading "Clapton is God", listen to his blistering solo on "Deserted Cities of the Heart" on "Wheels of Fire" and you'll know why. No comparison, just two of the all time greats!
lets face it. theres one that gilmour did that clapton cant is write the worlds greatest solo. but gilmour is so beyond comfortably much just listen to the solo of echoes its almost as good as c. numb.
good hell my two top guitarist and i must pick, .. well Gilmour is obviously good at just letting licks fall out of his guitar spur of the moment where eric doesnt seem to change much from the album version. David is so emotional when playing its like it just happens and each time its better and better. Eric I love your skills but i have to hand it to Mr. Gimour, he has my vote! nothing comes close to the floyd taste that only Gilmour can produce. david you move my soul when I hear you play!
Gilmour is always best. more emotion, more tecnique, just a better guitarist. Clapton was great in his day, but never evolved...you don't see petrucci cover "clap's" music
Both are amazing Im a huge blues guy so your thinking Im going to pick Erich well wrong because David in his own right is a great Blues guitar player, its just covered by the floyd sound but you can hear it all over his playing, i love them both period!!
clapton is doing the same blues routine (ALL these later) that floyd had already so perfected in the late sixties. floyd played it till it had to be evolved, clapton has just been kicking the old blues horse to death his entire career. I do respect clapton as a guitarist, but i like that floyd took things to another level. just my opinion... and btw, should we be comparing them alone or with their bands? a real *blues off* between them would be nice, (and friendly or it wouldnt be worth it....)
Clapton is better guitarist, technically. But Gilmour better fits to the compositions by PF, and sounds better with other instruments. I can't imagine they both playn' together - they're totally different. But i'd like to see Gilmour and Clapton on one stage. It could be very interesting show :>
4:45 everybody is hypnotized by the solo!!!! the only thing you can do when you listen gilmours guitar is to open your mouth and stay like that until it stops. then you can party with clapton :P both great but gilmour is from another planet! he got the blues in to psychedelic rock .. thats a big music step imo.
Eric Clapton not by far though, just a little bit. Eric and David are truely two of the guitar greats at there genre but if I go with feeling and playing im with Eric but for music im still going with Eric..
