Wow. I was just thinking of this the other day, and here it is.
I haven't seen it in a long time, and I can't believe I never noticed before----the two different parts of this are done in completely different styles. The design is different, the painting is different----everything. Either it was two different directors, or the artist was deliberately altering the styles to reflect the places being talked about.
My God... this brings me way back... tear tear... Jim Henson was so innovative for his time... I can remember 3 mentions of Haitians on Sesame street this one, the song Caribbean Amphibian, and a story of a girl who moved from Haiti to New York. Big Hug Sesame Street, the best children's programing EVER.
Ahh...I remember this one sooooo well! What a classic clip this is! I missed sooooo much, but now I'm glad to see it again! BTW, anybody have a clue as to when this first aired? Seems to me like the late 80s-early 90s. Last time I saw it was between 1993-95.
Love this one.....it is on the Bedtime for Elmo video. I love how Sesame Street intersperses the old clips (that parents like me remember and love) with the new videos that our kids watch.
It's always been an old home remedy that a cup of warm milk will put one to sleep very quickly.
And coconut milk does have a lot more sugar in it than animal milk, but in India, people do not consume animal milk -- especially not cow's milk. So coconut milk is probably often used as a substitute.
@rhapsody710 Actually they do drink the cow's milk, but they don't eat the meat of the cow. That is because whilst in Hinduism (a prominant religion in India) the cow is considered sacred (and therefore a sin to kill), it's by products such as milk is actually considered pure and you can drink it. And I just noticed that your comment was made a year ago and you probably no longer care, but in the spirit of Seseme Street, I thought I would clarify a common misconception.
Haiti strictly speaking isn't an island though, it's half of the island of Hispaniola, (the other half being the Dominican Republic ) and Creole is spoken there more widely than French. As a (Caribbean) youth I would contest the points raised, even though overall, the clip is excellent in promoting diversity. Sesame Street was a pioneer in that respect, props for that.
@Thundergod25 Yes we speak more Creole than we do french, but the big difference is the spelling. Any Haitian can have a conversation in "Creole" and it will for the most part sound French. This is why when people hear us speak particularly in the United States they assume that it is strictly French. What the mother said to the little girl in French would be said the same way in Creole. The creole pronunciation will vary by region just as English does in the U.S. or in the U.K.
certain aspects of this clip have been in my memory, probably dormant since childhood, and now that I see this I remember the part where she drinks the milk and I thought when I was a child ''coconut milk?'' that was the first time I heard of the term of milk coming from a cocnut, I had only read about coconuts, I never actually touched one, I still have'nt!
This always reminds me of Mr. Twig tried to sleep, But the man above him will snore. And the man below him will sneeze. "HEY, YOU ABOVE, STOP SNORING!!!" "HEY YOU BELOW, STOP SNEEZING!!!"
Bet that nice Haitian house isnt up no more.......... Earthquake.

Does anyone have the sketch when an African boy puts on his pajamas and goes to bed with his teddy bear, and the teddy bear winks at the end?
Pocockable 1 year ago
My mother does not mind that I have grown.
She will still tuck me into bed.
And when she does, she gives me a big hug,
Along with a kiss on the head.
"Goodnight. I love you." I will hear her say.
That's how she wishes me good sleep.
We live in the United States of America.
English is mostly what we speak.

I don't think drinking before you sleep is a good idea. Your body has to digest it.
