Momenteel is er geen interrese in een vliegkampschip, we hebben de Rotterdam klasse heeft de rol van helikopter vliegdekschip heeft. Het ontwerp is zelfs door Japan en Amerika over genomen. Er zijn dus echt wel schepen in onze vloot die een dergelijke rol spelen. Er was inderdaad spraken van een tweede schip dat naast de Karel Doorman II zou komen, deze is niet afgemaakt, de vervangers van de Rotterdam klasse komen er wel aan en zal Zuiderkruis klasse gaan heten

1960, tijdens de Wereldreis, zat toen ook aan boord, net terug van Valparaiso Chili, lang Vuurland en Punta Arena.

It was a treat to find this video, as I thought there was no film footage of the event. Checking my log-book from that time, it WAS me that piloted the Seahawk registration 130 over Rio on that day.

Must have been a great experience to fly from our Dutch carrier! I wouldn't have the skills for that, but I admire those who can or could! Where did you convert to when the Karel Doorman was sold? MLD Neptunes? Helo's or maybe the air force?

@Change6609 After leaving Squadron 860 I was posted to Squadron 5 for a short while onto the Beechcraft L18 (SNB 5) and the Neptune, but was then offered a helicopter conversion. Flew the Sikorsky SH34J in Squadron 8 and made again many trips on the Karel Doorman and the Poolster. Other types flown were Bell 204 and S2A Tracker S2A Tracker. Left MLD in '69 to civil aviation.

After engine fire in Karel Doorman left MLD in '69 to civil aviation and flew many types of helicopters for the next 25 years in many countries for Bristow.

Het vliegschip lag bij ons aan de kade, als we de straat uit zouden lopen liep je tegen het schip aan, ik woon zelf nog op het noordereiland in Rotterdam, en het schip lag er van 1964 t/m 1968 aan de kade.

@noobmodeNL: er zijn nog genoeg propeller vliegtuigen bij verschillende (moderne) krijgsmachten in dienst (denk aan transport vliegtuigen, trainings vliegtuigen, onderzeeboot-bestrijdings vliegtuigen en verkennings vliegtuigen).

Remember it wasn't just the Americans who gave us freedom. The Netherlands was liberated by the Canadians, Brits, and Americans, but mostly the Canadians. But you should be thankful to all the allies because no country could have done it on their own, and we Dutch never stopped fighting btw in the Pacific too.
