I went there when I was a little kid. The upper floor had become an ice skating rink but the salt water baths were still in use. I used to go with one of pals (age ten or less) and our mothers had no qualms about letting us walk there, so it must have still been a pretty safe place. We were never bothered by anybody..
Some people suspect it was arson and some people speculate that this is the reason. It is reputed to have become "run down" and no longer a place people wanted to bring their families. My dad and grandfather both learned to swim at Sutro's but stopped going in its later years.
