If you've seen other vids with him and Victor Wooten and/or The Flecktones, he doesn't chew gum and has solid timing. There is no percussionist for DMB. The metronome is set to the sound of a cowbell. Matter of fact, check out them in the studio recording Shake Me Like A Monkey on the Big Whiskey DVD extra: you can hear the metronome as a cowbell loud and clear while the whole band is playing.

I've found that drummers like this, Carter, Danny Carey (tool), Neil Peart, etc. - all of the BEST, the gods of drumming - all have one thing that makes them just that. It's not their mind blowing talent as much as it is that they all pioneer a different way of playing. They are all different in their techniques. They all play a certain way that is unique to them and them alone.

I just love the fact that his high hat and his ride are on the same side of the kit. And that he plays open instead of crossing his arms. It enables him to do all sorts of effects that you wouldn't be able to do if it was set up and played "traditionally" For example watch when he's riding with his left hand he accents the high hat in between snare hits with his right. It would be much much more difficult if your hands werent close together like that.
