Proof once again that TMBG basically throw out songs for fun that are about twenty times more lyrically inventive and ingenious than most bands can muster for a single. Shine on,you crazy fingers.
Actually fuck them on second thought. I went to see them tonight and they played this song and it was good but they were too cool to play most of their hits. I hate old ass bands that think we wants to hear the new bs they make. Play the classics your piece of shit, i payed good money and they didnt play half their hits so fuck them
Really. They did not play any "hits?" On the show I went to on 02/03/2012. They played lots of "hits": Sorry you only want to hear from "Flood", but I know everyone around me was wanting to hear from all their 15 albums. I will list the hits they played:
Cowtown,Can't Keep Johnny Down, Celebration, Istanbul (Not Constantinople), Snowball In Hell (spoken section by The Avatars Of They), James K. Polk, Judy Is Your Viet Nam, Battle For The Planet Of The Apes, Old Pine Box, Marty Beller Mask, Careful What You Pack, Crazy Train, Pandor Jingle (Avatars Of They), Paranoid (Avatars Of They), Spoiler Alert(Avatars Of They),
Crazy Train, Cloisonné, You Probably Get That A Lot, The Guitar, The Future Of Sound, Birdhouse In Your Soul, Damn Good Times, Ana Ng, We Live In A Dump, Fingertips, When Will You Die, How Can I Sing Like A Girl?, Particle Man, Doctor Worm, New York City, and Dead. Is that enough "hits" for you?
If they'd have played Dr worm that would have been cool, they didn't even play a lot of those songs though because they didn't bother to bring any damn horns with them. Instead they brought sock puppets. It was still a decent show but I do feel ripped off that they couldnt play half their decent songs because of the lack of horns, which was a total surprise to me.

Hmm... I kind of see it as the one guy (Linnell) singing about writing a story while driving and the other (Flansburgh) IS the story. But they're both about driving. I guess.
@Technokomodo Really? I thought the lyrics were really clever. They aren't supposed to be eloquent or poetic because they're simply meant represent the inner monologues of two people. Whatever floats your boat though I guess.
This song is just brilliant. The way the seemingly unrelated sets of lyrics play off each other is great, like when they both say "cover my eyes" at the same time. Try listening to the song using headphones sometime, but take one of them out to isolate only one of the Johns (then do it the other way around).
Anyway, it seems to be about two distracted drivers who are about to crash into each other at the end of the song. Very TMBG - upbeat music, dark but funny lyrics.

@Jakdakson I did this...I had listened to it a few times, and wasn't incredibly impressed. Then, I listened with headphones, and that changed my whole perspective on it...lol.
@Papposilenos Quite really! Maybe I exaggerated a bit, but Spoilert Alert, along with Celebration(s?) is the worst song on Join Us. The rest is pretty solid. This video, and the video for Can't Keep Johnny Down, is just lazy.
@ZeroOfBells I quite disagree. Spoiler Alert is one of the best songs on the album. Not only is it masterful in its harmonized vocals, but the whole song is so deliberately detailed and well written that I must protest quite outright. I think the issue is your comprehension, not the material in question.
@ toiletstore, first of all, take a peek at the thumbed-down comments. The three I looked at were not just opinions, but rather mean-spirited and two were indeed out rightly offensive. Next, the popular belief is that TMBG's music is not popular. It's been over 20 years since I stopped trying to convince others that the band is great. The people who don't like it won't like it. Those who do enjoy this band are very tired of the haters. Rock Videos: "Fast, cheap, and good---pick two."
I like this song, but the video was just damned boring. It's a cute idea, but it would have better served a Fingertips song (no pun intended) than a full 2:37 length one. It might as well have just been a still picture for all the lack of variety.
Now, you want a good TMBG video, search for Can't Keep Johnny Down. THAT'S a good TMBG video!
what is with the negative opinions being downvoted to the point of being hidden? it's okay to not like something. this is probably my least favorite album of theirs. who cares? as long as it's not gratuitously offensive, someone should be allowed to think against the popular belief.
Great song - old school TMBG. I can't believe the haters could write any kind of song, let alone one as cleverly and intricately written as this! Nice to see the Johns live too. Lets see a vid for Lady and the Tiger now, please!
I like to imagine that the Johns wrote the music, then each came up with their own melody/lyrics, then met back up and spliced them together. I love this song, get out of here, haters.
Diggin' it! I haven't been a very good TMBG fan as of late. Haven't bought "Join Us" yet and have only heard a few songs from it. So first impression, very positive. :D
The Johns probably feel the songs they spend the longest time learning and writing are better than they actually are. (ie: with the dark) - This might be a good example. But Im pretty happy to see them make any sort of video, even if almost every other song on the new album would have been a better candidate.
Proof once again that TMBG basically throw out songs for fun that are about twenty times more lyrically inventive and ingenious than most bands can muster for a single. Shine on,you crazy fingers.
