ever since i started riding many many moons ago i have always learned something new with the stirrups and then without. it is an excellent exercise for balance and developing your seat. you did good. your probably a lot better now too since this is old. :)
@craisydazy18 You do learn a lot without stirrups! Haha, yes I've improved a ton. I can stay on without stirrups during upwards transitions but staying on during a downward transition is harder for me, haha.
@izzy123wizzy Unfortunately you failed to notice that this video is over 3 years old and you also failed to notice that this was my 3rd time trying to post at the trot without stirrups so it was difficult for me to keep my leg on and post at the same time. Last but not least it's not any of your business. Thanks ;)
You did good :) Yesterday was my first time posting without stirrups and I liked it but I hate sitting lol and cantering is so much easier, does anyone else find that?
@xoxMusicalHorsexox I definitely find that to be true lol until it comes time to stop... I always almost fall off when I go down to a walk or a trot haha
Sitting trot is fine to me, but without stirrups I don't want to try much xD Just like posting while not having your stirrups on - the first time I did that, I really had aching inner legs, haha xD
I did that Sunday and I'm still sore. I always pinch with my knees when rising! I can't do it! Like i feel like dying after one time around the ring! Does anyone have any tips for rising without stirrups? I have been riding for about one year at this barn and a year before that i was riding for 2 years at a different barn
Lol thanks :) Good luck with it. I love posting trot without stirrups except I got super hurt last time I did it. Horse spooked at something, took off, and threw me into the wall! Ouch. (Not the same horse in this video)
Haha yeah, I feel like that happens :) Especially when you're first doing it! That's pretty much all I'm doing in the video xD Though now I'm a lot better. It hurts soooo bad tho!!
Good job, this can be so hard and depending on the horse it can be nerve racking. Some horses give you all the bounce you need and some make you work through every post. Its a great work out for your legs as far as strength and creating a "long leg"... Keep trying, and it will get much much easier (and more fun) once you get your legs used to working harder =)
I used to have a fear of posting w/out stirrups because when I was 10 or something I was riding a retired racehorse without stirrups and I gave him a leg cue to make him canter by accident, so he cantered (he goes really really fast) and I stayed on half of the way before I fell. He was all, "I'm sorry!" and he nudged me and everything. He's really sweet. But I had a fear of it for half a year.
Yeah it can be scary sometimes... especially when the horse is known to get fast randomly or take off... or spook... haha. I love riding without stirrups though, it's really fun :)
Yeah, I'd carry a crop if I were you. Except once in a while you get a horse that kicks out when you smack them on the butt, so try a light tap on the shoulder. If that doesn't, do it harder- if that still doesn't work, then give his butt a smack.
i remember when i first trotted without stirrups(: we had to pass a canter test too! but it makes your legs alot strongger and cantering is so much fun!
haha, yea! I have like, awesome legs now, and if I stumble and lose both my stirrups when jumping, I can stay on like, perfectly XD it funny lol.
My trainer in the video was having me practice my "canter test" which is a test you had to pass before you were allowed to start cantering, to make sure your legs were strong enough. :)
Well done! I cant trot on a horse without stirrups without freaking out. I had a really horrible fall off a tall horse when I was nine years old. It was without stirrups and my helmet cracked because i fell on hard ground. Now I have a horrible fear of trotting without stirrups :(
Aaaw I'm sorry to hear that D= Things like that can really ruin a persons confidence about certain things.. I know, cause when I was learning to canter the horse bucked and I fell off, it was my first fall so yea. But now I'm cantering fine and jumping :)
I would suggest you try it again, though! :) Or maybe not, cause its not fun.. it hurts your abs sometimes xD
Yeah. I guess I was getting better *slowly* because i started trotting without stirrups on two sweet horses which were reaLly comfy to trot on. Otherwise, i'll have to try on a horse i really trust and get better eventually :)
haha CWIT07 I did that once! i was cantering and lost a stirrup so i went down to the trot to get it back and starting posting. it's strange only having one. lol.
no stirrup work is just LOADS of fun! :] My trainer used to have no stirrup WINTERS. she would just take the stirrups off all the saddles and hide them. 0.0
lol! nice i was doing this today for only like 10 minutes and i was like okay ! thats it! my thighs are burning like crazy! lol posting with no stirrups is painful :P nice job thought!!
No offence but you should cross your stirrups over the front of the saddle, sit back and deep in the saddle, elbows by side and bent and shoulders back, also toes up.Makes it easier.

and if ur horse doesn't listen! :P he wont trot no matter how much i kick him and if he does he stops
Bloodless9Mare 2 years ago
Lol, is he a school horse? A lot of times school horses get really desensitized to leg and stop listening.
Do you carry a crop? Give him a big 'old smack on the butt with one :P
shiiuza 2 years ago
yeh he is a school horse, i don't think he's desensitized though i heard he's realy naughty ! :p and i should carry a whip? that's fine yeh?

I've improved a ton though.. now I could go around that ring like 6 times before I even started to get tired xD

Yeah. It really helps you work on balance!
CWIT07 3 years ago
nope, it's at Stoneleigh Burnham. =]
shiiuza 3 years ago
my issue with dangling is that sometimes the stirrup can hit the horse and the horse thinks you are kicking them forward.
that happened to me when i was riding jester and he started to canter and that was before i had ever cantered...
so it works both ways but i like to cross them
