I´m deeply embarrassed to have skipped this song for many years before I really listened to it with full attention. What have I missed until this moment! One of the strongest songs ever. Such powerful lyrics...
I´ve just uploaded a video of a friend and me playing this song. We don´t try to imitate the original version (which no one can) but to play it completely different only with guitar and nyckelharpa (a key fiddle). Maybe some of you might like to listen to it.
@UnTechWHV sometimes there is just a certain point in ones life when something just suddenly makes sense! Bruce takes you through so many phases of growing up with his music and lyrics... he's the best parental figure next to our own and the best storyteller of all time Bruuuuuce forever <3
Oh my God, I assumed this was going to be a recent live version, I guess b/c of the thumbnail photograph & b/c he's begun to bring out some of the older stuff again. So i was surprised when I heard the album version's beautiful beginning & surprised that I almost started to cry. I have no idea when I last listened to this song, but I listened to this album endlessly the year that it was released. The only reason I lifted this album off the record player was to flip it over to the other side.
Reminds me of hangin' on the jersey shore in the summer of 1978! Stuck in okiefuckinohma right now, but can't wait to return back east. Rock on, Bruce!
This song is so fuking underrated. I love bruce to death and as a 20 year old college kid, cruising around with my buddy late at night inthe summer.. We blast the Darkness album after partying all day to Born To Run.. And when this song comes on..
what is it with his music? I mean you can hear a song for a long time and know its good then one day you really hear it and you get it. if just for yourself you really get it.
Well what can i say.........i used to listen to this when i was getting ready to go out clubbing at the tender age of 17, i am now 37 one failed relationship 3 beautiful kids and now one beautiful marriage later and yet i put this on and it reminds me of those heay days going out clubbing finding my way, wearing Jazz aftershave lol ! Long live bruce u have been there through thick and thin, how my life would have been non existent if it wasnt for u and ur music.
Well I'm riding towards J'ville figuring I'll get a drink. Well I turn the radio up loud so I don't have to think (at all). And I take her to the floor looking for a moment when the world feels rights. And I tear into the guts, hmmmmmm, something in the night.
can't argue with you about most any song on it! (except maybe Factory --I was happy when I would read Charles R. Cross singling that one out as the weakest --cause it is, and it's STILL great!
But Streets Of Fire, OH!
"I walk with angels that have no place"
I LOVE Streets Of Fire!!!! Good pick, probably my second favorite, although Darkness...and then there's.... :)
Please, please, please, does anyone have a decent vid of this from the current tour? (Hamburg ain't it!) SITN is one of Bruce's greatest ballads, but he rarely plays it live. I believe he DID play it in Columbus, OH this spring. If anybody has it, PLEASE PUT IT UP!
I know. right? I listen to this song & I turn the radio up loud so I won't have to think, driving down highway 17 in the country, without another human being in sight, I feel the need to take it to the floor, looking for a moment when the world seems right.
Ever have doubts about choices you've made, where your life's going, if things are going to get any better, been lonely, sad, but not known why, felt that something was missing but not known what.
I suspect everyone has. This song captures these feelings brilliantly. It was written by a young genius.
foppa123: I absolutely agree. I'm also going to have "Darkness" buried w/ me.....but not until it gets played one last time at my funeral. No church hymns for me man.
It's very debatable. Each song of his captures something different. All are lyrically phenomenal. I only discovered Racing in The Street a few weeks back and rocketed itself into my top 5 Bruce songs ever. It is a fantastic song. Definitely up there with the likes of Backstreets, BToR & Jungleland.
The River is solid. (Listening to it now!) If you don't know what to listen to, sit back and slap on the River - it's a good standby. It's grown on me since I loved it the first listen, and it had a lot of energy.
Amazing song! I heard this song for the first time ever performed live at the Asbury Park show on Sept 24, 2007. Amazing! I'll never forget it. I had been waiting to hear it for years and many shows.
It is more than a great song. It's one of Bruce's best. An absolute classic. By the way, he played it on August 1 or 2, 1999 at the Meadowlands during that 15 night, 300,000 person stand that began the USA leg of the Union tour. The Darkness album is a far far more than the sum of the parts.
I first saw Bruce in Philadelphia (May 26, 1978) Darkness Tour. He didn't play this that night, but I finally did get to see & hear it live in Philly during the '99 tour. This chick next to me had to tell me to calm down. LOL. Awesome. Such emotion in those moans & yells. Some people just don't get it.
One of my favo springsteen songs. It's from the album ''Darkness on the Edge of Town" from 1978. It is one of the so many underated springsteen songs.
Bruce, you mean so much to me.
This one and point blank and backstreets and nothing man and ... Oh man, can't stop.

This is the song that made me buy this record... Absolute soul-shaking insanity. Dark, deep and slow like syrup. Like a poison of mad rebirth.
I love you, Bruce.

I agree completely. I played it for an hour solid when the album came out, and find myself doing it again.
I've been to 56 shows over 31 years and only seen it once. Finally, there's a great live version posted. Munich, from about a week or so ago.

Best song from his best album. I mean, maybe some songs on there might be better --live.
He never equaled himself in the studio, did better than this --and this was a demo!
Greatest album of all time.
