I wrote the very first Amazon review for Corey Glover's one and only solo CD. I even mentioned that he sounded like the guy (Carl Anderson) who played Judas in the Jesus Christ Superstar. Guess what? That was way back in 1998............I must have had a premonition!!!!!
Corey's melismatic delivery (@ 2:52) of the line, "if we go too far" gives me chills every time! I keep replaying it for that feeling...an actual physical reaction...fascinating.
I'm a huge fan of corey glover, but im sorry, this is terrible. He is trying wayyy too hard. The random pitch changes dont suit me too well. Not to mention, on various parts he sings about an octave higher than whats supposed to be there, and it doesnt sound right at all. Stick with Living Colour corey
agreed they need a live band> it's to bad to the vocals are smoking hot. Could have been a good realese in studio with neeley and glover would have been awesume.
Corey is amazing, as everytime he sings... I really love Carl anderson performing judas, but I think it' s interesting and pleasant to hear a wonderful singer giving his charismatic version of this role...
Carl Anderson was the best in this role because he a) orignated the role, and b) was one of the most amazing tenors on the frigging planet.
Don't get me wrong; Corey can sing his little butt off. And Corey studied with Carl for the role when Carl first fell ill, which is probably why you can hear so many similarities in phrasing and inflection. But nobody really compares to Carl Anderson.
@ChrisMagoo99 Not many, really. There was Murray Head and Ben Vereen, really. Anderson did Judas a year after the album was released with his band, Second Eagle. Then, he understudied for Vereen on Broadway in 71. Then, we got all of the other greats, like Jon English.
@sirReginaldFartsalot Well I mean, you're right in the sense that Vereen was the first to play the role on Broadway. But in terms of being first to ever sing it and in doing so, setting the standard, it was Murray Head.
@theanimal6592 No worries. I learned something new. I even found a few YouTube clips of Murray Head singing JCSS. Though, I have to say my fav is still Carl Anderson.
Ive seen Corey perform this live, twice. I wasnt crazy about it. He seemed to yell the parts that he should be telling.. Carl was Perfect at it because he would sing it as if he were speaking..that how this song should be sung.. The new guy who plays the judas role now..does a decent job.. IMHO
I don't understand the complaints. Corey is fantastic and he interpreted this song his own way. I loved Carl but Corey is not Carl. It's always interesting for me to see someone new take on this role with a different passion.
@Chulaan I absolutely agree! I've seen all of the versions many times and I personally appreciate the new interpretations of the song. And it is strange to me why every singer is compared with Carl Anderson when I don't personally think they are comparable...but Carl is still alright to me.
Ive seen Corey perform this Live twice.. and once with the new guy.. Corey sings well but this song works better when sung like your speaking to Him.. (Like Carl did)..rather than just singing the lyrics.. Great singer though...

he completely rewrote the song. There's a difference between improvisation. If we could sing whatever we please then there's no need for composers. But that's not how it is. Glover needs to calm down a little.

I'd say over all this was an incredibly lacking production of a great show. Ted Neeley more or less walked through the role, and a lot of the staging felt tired and over done.
I have no problem with vocal improvisation and vocally making a song your own. I think Corey Glover did some pretty impressive and exciting things with the role in this regard. I'll agree that he's a little green acting wise. Having seen him live, i'll say he has a LOT of passion and with some work and perhaps a better director he could be a GREAT judas!
He sings the whole song at the very top of his belt and it makes those spectacular high notes written into the song not seem special. I wish he had stuck to the written notes just a little bit more, and saved the riffing and high belty parts for the end. Would have made for a more powerful performance.
I could not agree more. Sticking with the Carl Anderson version would have been much better. He starts out on too high an emotional (and vocal) plane and doesn't leave himself much of anywhere to go. He's a great singer, but he oversang this song both figuratively and literally.
I also agree. I hate when singers do this. This is a Tony winning score. Do you really think you're going to improve on it with some vocal acrobatics?
I totally agree, it's simply overdone. He has a very powerful range, but lacks of interpretation. It seems like he just wants to show off. What a pity!
I saw Corey as well... but I don't think he was trying to be the 'villain'. He really seemed like someone stubborn who was trying to show their friend 'Hey! Hey, Jesus, won't you LISTEN to me!? I'm right! Seriously, this won't end well!'. And eventually he gets with the priests and ends up doing something he regrets. I really loved Corey's version. It's different from Carl's, but definitely not bad, in my own opinion of course!
Wow! I'm really amazed that i actually really enjoyed this! I thought that i would never like anyone else playing judas apart from carl anderson, but this guy is amazing! still doesn't compare to carl though!
I saw him in Washington D.C. and fell in love with his Judas. He really did make it his own which is a good things since JCS is one of those plays that can get stale if you see it done the same way too many times
Looks like the place I saw it! I LOVED the Judas. His voice is just so... holy god. It's really haunting, almost. and such an awesome tone. I wish I could see it again- oh, wait, I am, right now XD
I saw him the day after this video was shot. It was fantastic! I love Carl's version and Corey's is right up there. I was impressed. Though I wish I could have seen it live when Carl was still doing it
Ok regardless of anything about his interpretation of the song, can we all agree its literally a miracle for him to have that much weight on his top range? holy shit this guy is literally one of a kind.
This same production came through Des Moines and I went and saw it opening night and I must say that Corey is by far (in my opinion) the best Judas I have seen/heard. This is a lousy recording and it doesn't give justice to what Corey sounds like live. It was very intense and full.
I saw this twice last summer and I had to say I was not particularly impressed with Corey Glover. I mean his voice is awesome but I didn't think he was a great actor.
I have to agree in the sense that the performance needs to be revolutionized over time. I think 35 years is long enough. He made this his own and he did mighty fine. Also, take notice, the orchestration changes to keep in range with his interpretation, I thought that was especially neat. Key in on the piano to really notice it. I also agree that no one can top Murray Head. Pick up the OCC asap if you can, it is really worth it.
I saw Corey Glover when the tour came to San Diego, his voice is SO great and his range is awesome
but the whole melody of Heaven on their mind was lost, i was sad, because if he had followed the melody it would have been AMAZING... but instead it was only great
This production is coming to town and I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a good seat. Now I'm sort of indifferent. This pretentious warbling leaves me cold; it's all flourish and no heat. It's like he's going out of his way to be different. Well, here's a clue. Why do you think virtually every Hollywood remake of a 60s/70s TV show tanks at the Box Office? Think it might be because they are produced by people who go out of their way to "be different".
And I don't want to be misunderstood. I think Corey Glover is probably an otherwise fine performer. By the same token, Luciano Pavarotti was a great singer, but I wouldn't want to see him in "Grease".
Well Jesus Christ Superstar is really a production with no notes for the lyrics, much like productions such as Hairspray, the performers bring their own notes to the roles. Corey is no different, i think the only reason why people put him down or say the melody is off is because everyone is use to hearing Carl Andersons version of it.
No, suicide2003. You're way off-base. Let me prove why. It's not a simple matter of one interp vs another. Most longtime fans have absolutely NO PROBLEM enjoying Murray Head, Ben Vereen OR Carl Andersen (& others). They each bring their distinctive style & energy to the song -- but they DON'T purposely sing against the melody the way Glover does. I'm happy to declare Glover an otherwise talented singer, but in this case he crossed the line and needs to give fidelity to the song -- not his ego.
For me, i've listened to all those versions, i've been devoted to this show for years and have actually done community theater performances under the role of Judas and one performance as Jesus. I consider Ben Vereen and Carl Andersons to be the best performances, I like Glovers version, he just brings his own style to it, much like any other performer who have played that role live. The only problem i have with him is that he lacks the emotion and attitude for the character.
Are you kidding?? Webber watched this at the Kennedy Center Honors and loved his performance. As for his version working with the rest of the music, it fits great if you can just put aside the other versions. Try actually "listening"...there's so much feeling put across in his vocals. And its obviously not too difficult to do it with because he does it really well.
Actually, I like this version only because no one can beat Murray Head [Original Concept Cast], and he at least took a different approach [as oppose to Ben Vereen or Carl Anderson].
Why did the Musical Director allow him to change the vocal line and riff so much? The notes are there for a good reason - to compliment the rest of the music. By allowing him to sing his own version, it has caused some disonance with himself and the rest of the music. His "style" would be ok in other things, but "Superstar" is too notationally difficult to do this - it is written in too specific a way.
Well, my opinion stands. I saw the show last night. It was UNBELIEVABLE! Corey's performance was amazing. This video, nor the Juda's Death video do him justice. He's since refined his performance without those squeals you hear in the video in Judas' death, he really attacks those notes now which was pleasantly surprising to hear. Heaven On Their Minds, yes, is different, but not so much as to call it bad. I'm sure after a few viewings I'd be just as use to it as I am with the original....
You bet it's different, he's changed the entire vocal line, note for note. I was at opening night in Boston, and was impressed with the ensembles and the staging. However, I would have liked a bit more singing and less yelling from the soloists. My benchmark is the 1973 Gillan/Murray recording, and sadly this version doesn't compare.
The OCR is my favorite as well. And I saw it in Boston as well that Saturday. However, the only song he's truly ran away with is Heaven on Their Minds. Every other song was almost note for note with the original. I especially loved Damned For All Time and Judas' Death. By the way, did you think the slo-mo fight at the beginning was awesome or what!? Oh man that was so sick. As well as the Last Supper pose, man two great moments.
I had high expectations for Corey when I saw this tour last year. I mean the 1st time I saw JCS live Carl Anderson was Judas (a couple months before he passed RIP). I was pleasantly surprised how well Corey performed. Sometimes I forgot it wasn't Carl Anderson I was hearing.
I saw this two nights ago in PA. Corey's version of this song is AMAZING! All of you who think you know what your talking about when messing on videos like this donn't know a thing about theatre and making music your own and different. That's exactly what Corey did here and did a wonderful job of it too. Kudos Corey, BRAVO!
I just saw the show last lastnight. Here are my opinions:
I HATED all of Corey's rifs and changing the song. He ruined HotM. Why can't he just sing it regular? He cracked a bunch of times too.
Ted was pretty good I guess. He was really scratchy in the begining, but he got better. Geth was pretty good. Some people gave him a standing ovation after it.
The show was still amazing though! Great lighting. The courus was really good too.
Corey changed it. I mean, it's a great musical, but he made the song his own. If he had sung it 'regular', as you say, it wouldn't be original. It would be like, "Oh, its a guy singing Heaven on Their Minds.". But if you listen to his riffs, they're really well done. His range in his head voice, how's he's able to change it around, and it's a bit more contemporary. If everyone sang it like the original... well, who would want to see it? Seriously. And yeah, I saw Ted as Jesus... he's getting old
ok animal,, your saying that the on screen conection between carl and ted can be replaced? thats the dumbest thing i ever heard, even neeley said that what they had was something special. obviously its editied, everything is edited, and im sure the jabronies performances you mention would be edited as well to make them look better than they really are. nothing is pure in the industry. carl anderson and ted neeleys on screen relationship is something that does not happen very often
Jabronies? So Drew Sarich and THE ORIGINAL JUDAS Murray Head are jabronies now? You sir, are a fool. Drew Sarich is probably the best live performer I've ever seen. Ever. Ever. Ever. And Murray Head was just plain better than Carl Anderson. Hands down. And yes, I'd bet you anything that connection could be replaced. Drew Sarich and Serkan Kaya already accomplished that one.
LOL. Maybe it's "unbeatable" because his on-screen performance is the only on-screen performance lest you consider Jerome Pradon's butchering a "performance". Corey, Drew, and Murray would blow Carl Anderson's performance out of the water if they had an oppurtunity to be Judas on film. Not only that, but films can be edited which I'm sure were in the '73 movie. Tsk tsk sir, you are SORELY mistaken.
ok, gillan was good but his gethsemane sucked major balls, and carl anderson is by far the best judas, not only vocally but his on screen performance is unbeatable
I think that ever once and a while, a performer needs to take a shot at something new. I think Corey has not only done that, but has done it and succeeded. Also, call me crazy, but, I'm not that fond of Carl Anderson. "Started a revolution", excuse me, but that revolution was started by none other than Murray Head. My top 3 Judas' go to Drew Sarich, Murray Head, and Corey Glover. If you haven't heard the original studio album I recommend it, no one will ever replace Gillan either.
jstfrfnnn1 - come one who wouldnt like to hear a different version of Stairway, wouldnt you like to hear a different interpretation, that how classics are kept alive....covers keep the good stuff alive and almost always provide a different angle to look at the original... glovers is soulfull where carls is much more dark and tortured 2 different ways to sing it but still the same great song
pyperticus - I couldn't agree with you more, it's great to hear a variety of interpretations as long as you don't reinvent the wheel. No question Corey has a powerhouse voice, but he's almost completely changed the melody, what's the point? And I like your description of Carl's version which was dark and tortured, the way I have always pictured Judas.
I agree with you in a way, but personally, I've heard many better versions of this song than Carl's. No doubt he started a revolution for this song, but his version is outdated. People like Corey (and more so with Drew Sarich in my opinion) are taking this song to a new level. I don't think anyone does it better than Drew, but this version definitely sent chills down my back the first time I heard it.
For my part this artist carries a boatload of talent, worth the ticket. For years fellow fans and I have been creating that 'dreamcast' for JC you hear about-and he was one choice for Judas. I'll be seeing the production in May and will
have a first-hand response, but looking and
listening to this take I find him just a bit
indulgent-his vox are trumping the role-it'd be nice to see him invest
the same talent & emotion into the written melody to communicate the character.
jstfrfnnn - do you really think it was ultimately up to carey to change the melody of the song? if you saw the production youd know that i was way different than the movie, they even left out the song "then we are decided." carey's version fits his voice so much better than the original would have. this plays been in production since before the movie, why not change it a little and experiment with different sounds, everyone heard the original, im glad they gave me something new to experience
pyperticus - fyi I attended 3 shows of this production last month. I thoroughly enjoyed the shows, but I SORELY MISSED hearing the original melody of both "heaven on their minds" and "superstar" (to which Corey added some sort of really high pitched almost inaudible scream?) If in fact he was not responsible for changing the melody of the songs as you imply, then I will own my words. But we don't know for a fact, and it was like changing the melody to a classic like "stairway to heaven."
I saw this show last night at Providence Performing Arts Center, oh my GOD. My first show. This set the bar high as far as expectations go for other shows. I swear the had Corey Glover hold back on the last number, Superstar, just so he wouldn't steal the show. Because he came damn close from stealing Ted Neeley's spotlight. But Ted sounded incredible. My smile throughout the whole show was from ear to ear, I can't wait to see it again next time it tours.
i just saw this a coupel weekends ago. corey was ok, but this song and the last supepr were the only ones he was good at. sorry corey lovers, but i think drew sarich or tony vincent would've been better
WHY??????? did Corey Glover change the melody of this great song. Why doesn't he save his improvisation for his rock group? He's got to know JCS lovers know the music and songs verbatim, and that includes notes!!!!!!!!!
I am seeing this on Wednesday. I seriously hope the understudies are not in... matinee day and all. My seats are 7th row center. I hope it's a decent view.
It's called a melody. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote this song, and the way he wrote it was beautiful. In my opinion, the emotion evoked from the song is completely destroyed through this awful improvisation. He stays on unnecessarily high notes instead of following the original melody. Two thumbs down.
he can certainly sing, but this is a truly awful vocal interpretation of the song. Basically he departs from the tune far too much, sometimes goes several bars without hitting an 'original' note. It's nice for vocalists too add their own interpretations, but imo this is way over the top. A shame, as he's very talented. He sings Judas' Death really well.
he is awesome, but he he keeps his voice too high up and too many note changes. it doesn't hurt to tone down a bit. but he does a good job. i can't wait to see this in feburary!
Damn. FIERCE!

DizzyBizzy88 3 years ago 3
I also agree. I hate when singers do this. This is a Tony winning score. Do you really think you're going to improve on it with some vocal acrobatics?
Hegder 3 years ago
if you cant see how fucking good his version is as well then you must not be very musical.
meisjekim 3 years ago

He really is amazing! i love his interpretation of this song! one of my favourite vocalists of all time

Ok regardless of anything about his interpretation of the song, can we all agree its literally a miracle for him to have that much weight on his top range? holy shit this guy is literally one of a kind.
or10z2k 3 years ago
This same production came through Des Moines and I went and saw it opening night and I must say that Corey is by far (in my opinion) the best Judas I have seen/heard. This is a lousy recording and it doesn't give justice to what Corey sounds like live. It was very intense and full.
TrainerOsky 3 years ago
I saw this twice last summer and I had to say I was not particularly impressed with Corey Glover. I mean his voice is awesome but I didn't think he was a great actor.

Ya, Corey's great! But if I had to vote on who was best, Carl would always win. But if I couldn't say Carl, Corey'd be it hands down!

hands down best judas. This isnt the best recording though because i saw him live in spokane, and he blew my mind. i loved his performance :]
oliviaphobia 3 years ago
I have to agree in the sense that the performance needs to be revolutionized over time. I think 35 years is long enough. He made this his own and he did mighty fine. Also, take notice, the orchestration changes to keep in range with his interpretation, I thought that was especially neat. Key in on the piano to really notice it. I also agree that no one can top Murray Head. Pick up the OCC asap if you can, it is really worth it.
theanimal6592 3 years ago
Amen. OCC is still by far the best recording.
StarryNight713 3 years ago
I saw Corey Glover when the tour came to San Diego, his voice is SO great and his range is awesome
but the whole melody of Heaven on their mind was lost, i was sad, because if he had followed the melody it would have been AMAZING... but instead it was only great
jonster00 3 years ago
This production is coming to town and I was worried I wouldn't be able to get a good seat. Now I'm sort of indifferent. This pretentious warbling leaves me cold; it's all flourish and no heat. It's like he's going out of his way to be different. Well, here's a clue. Why do you think virtually every Hollywood remake of a 60s/70s TV show tanks at the Box Office? Think it might be because they are produced by people who go out of their way to "be different".
FuDaWei 3 years ago
i totally agree with you there
jonster00 3 years ago
And I don't want to be misunderstood. I think Corey Glover is probably an otherwise fine performer. By the same token, Luciano Pavarotti was a great singer, but I wouldn't want to see him in "Grease".
FuDaWei 3 years ago
Well Jesus Christ Superstar is really a production with no notes for the lyrics, much like productions such as Hairspray, the performers bring their own notes to the roles. Corey is no different, i think the only reason why people put him down or say the melody is off is because everyone is use to hearing Carl Andersons version of it.
suicide2003 3 years ago
No, suicide2003. You're way off-base. Let me prove why. It's not a simple matter of one interp vs another. Most longtime fans have absolutely NO PROBLEM enjoying Murray Head, Ben Vereen OR Carl Andersen (& others). They each bring their distinctive style & energy to the song -- but they DON'T purposely sing against the melody the way Glover does. I'm happy to declare Glover an otherwise talented singer, but in this case he crossed the line and needs to give fidelity to the song -- not his ego.
FuDaWei 3 years ago
For me, i've listened to all those versions, i've been devoted to this show for years and have actually done community theater performances under the role of Judas and one performance as Jesus. I consider Ben Vereen and Carl Andersons to be the best performances, I like Glovers version, he just brings his own style to it, much like any other performer who have played that role live. The only problem i have with him is that he lacks the emotion and attitude for the character.
suicide2003 3 years ago
this guy has an amazing voice! i love his interpretation of this song.
chaotiksin12 3 years ago
Are you kidding?? Webber watched this at the Kennedy Center Honors and loved his performance. As for his version working with the rest of the music, it fits great if you can just put aside the other versions. Try actually "listening"...there's so much feeling put across in his vocals. And its obviously not too difficult to do it with because he does it really well.
AcDcGTRfreAk 3 years ago
...but Webber must be pissed.
He doesn't like people to mess with his shit.
StarryNight713 3 years ago
Actually, I like this version only because no one can beat Murray Head [Original Concept Cast], and he at least took a different approach [as oppose to Ben Vereen or Carl Anderson].
StarryNight713 3 years ago
Why did the Musical Director allow him to change the vocal line and riff so much? The notes are there for a good reason - to compliment the rest of the music. By allowing him to sing his own version, it has caused some disonance with himself and the rest of the music. His "style" would be ok in other things, but "Superstar" is too notationally difficult to do this - it is written in too specific a way.
leeleecohen 3 years ago
horrible version
Darkvirtue9 3 years ago
Well, my opinion stands. I saw the show last night. It was UNBELIEVABLE! Corey's performance was amazing. This video, nor the Juda's Death video do him justice. He's since refined his performance without those squeals you hear in the video in Judas' death, he really attacks those notes now which was pleasantly surprising to hear. Heaven On Their Minds, yes, is different, but not so much as to call it bad. I'm sure after a few viewings I'd be just as use to it as I am with the original....
theanimal6592 3 years ago
You bet it's different, he's changed the entire vocal line, note for note. I was at opening night in Boston, and was impressed with the ensembles and the staging. However, I would have liked a bit more singing and less yelling from the soloists. My benchmark is the 1973 Gillan/Murray recording, and sadly this version doesn't compare.
radsvid 3 years ago
The OCR is my favorite as well. And I saw it in Boston as well that Saturday. However, the only song he's truly ran away with is Heaven on Their Minds. Every other song was almost note for note with the original. I especially loved Damned For All Time and Judas' Death. By the way, did you think the slo-mo fight at the beginning was awesome or what!? Oh man that was so sick. As well as the Last Supper pose, man two great moments.
theanimal6592 3 years ago
I'm so happy. I was able to see him and Ted Neely this Friday. Absolutely amazing!
JulieMorisot1885 3 years ago
I had high expectations for Corey when I saw this tour last year. I mean the 1st time I saw JCS live Carl Anderson was Judas (a couple months before he passed RIP). I was pleasantly surprised how well Corey performed. Sometimes I forgot it wasn't Carl Anderson I was hearing.
ScorpioCutie86 3 years ago
I saw this two nights ago in PA. Corey's version of this song is AMAZING! All of you who think you know what your talking about when messing on videos like this donn't know a thing about theatre and making music your own and different. That's exactly what Corey did here and did a wonderful job of it too. Kudos Corey, BRAVO!

I mean Jesus Christ Super Star he's in the movie. I saw them selling it when I went to see it at the Palace.
YamisPrincess 3 years ago
No, no. That's the '73 version with Carl Anderson, I can see why you'd get confused, there is somewhat of a resemblance between Carl and Corey.
theanimal6592 3 years ago
I just saw the show last lastnight. Here are my opinions:
I HATED all of Corey's rifs and changing the song. He ruined HotM. Why can't he just sing it regular? He cracked a bunch of times too.
Ted was pretty good I guess. He was really scratchy in the begining, but he got better. Geth was pretty good. Some people gave him a standing ovation after it.
The show was still amazing though! Great lighting. The courus was really good too.
My fav Jesus is Steve Balsomo. He is amazing.
actorderick 3 years ago
Corey changed it. I mean, it's a great musical, but he made the song his own. If he had sung it 'regular', as you say, it wouldn't be original. It would be like, "Oh, its a guy singing Heaven on Their Minds.". But if you listen to his riffs, they're really well done. His range in his head voice, how's he's able to change it around, and it's a bit more contemporary. If everyone sang it like the original... well, who would want to see it? Seriously. And yeah, I saw Ted as Jesus... he's getting old
RoadMaster1959 3 years ago 2
ok animal,, your saying that the on screen conection between carl and ted can be replaced? thats the dumbest thing i ever heard, even neeley said that what they had was something special. obviously its editied, everything is edited, and im sure the jabronies performances you mention would be edited as well to make them look better than they really are. nothing is pure in the industry. carl anderson and ted neeleys on screen relationship is something that does not happen very often
pyperiticus 3 years ago
Drew Sarich and Serkan Kaya already accomplished that one.
theanimal6592 3 years ago
I'm seeing this May 16 in Boston!! SoOOOOO EXCITED!!!!!!
shmoogle14 3 years ago
Tsk tsk sir, you are SORELY mistaken.
theanimal6592 3 years ago
ok, gillan was good but his gethsemane sucked major balls, and carl anderson is by far the best judas, not only vocally but his on screen performance is unbeatable
pyperiticus 3 years ago
I think that ever once and a while, a performer needs to take a shot at something new. I think Corey has not only done that, but has done it and succeeded. Also, call me crazy, but, I'm not that fond of Carl Anderson. "Started a revolution", excuse me, but that revolution was started by none other than Murray Head. My top 3 Judas' go to Drew Sarich, Murray Head, and Corey Glover. If you haven't heard the original studio album I recommend it, no one will ever replace Gillan either.
theanimal6592 3 years ago
Isn't there a movie with him in it. They were selling it when I went to see it. Can someone upload it for me please?
YamisPrincess 3 years ago

shmoogle14 3 years ago
jstfrfnnn1 - come one who wouldnt like to hear a different version of Stairway, wouldnt you like to hear a different interpretation, that how classics are kept alive....covers keep the good stuff alive and almost always provide a different angle to look at the original... glovers is soulfull where carls is much more dark and tortured 2 different ways to sing it but still the same great song
pyperiticus 3 years ago
pyperticus - I couldn't agree with you more, it's great to hear a variety of interpretations as long as you don't reinvent the wheel. No question Corey has a powerhouse voice, but he's almost completely changed the melody, what's the point? And I like your description of Carl's version which was dark and tortured, the way I have always pictured Judas.
jstfrfnnn1 3 years ago
I agree with you in a way, but personally, I've heard many better versions of this song than Carl's. No doubt he started a revolution for this song, but his version is outdated. People like Corey (and more so with Drew Sarich in my opinion) are taking this song to a new level. I don't think anyone does it better than Drew, but this version definitely sent chills down my back the first time I heard it.

Volendammtje 3 years ago
For my part this artist carries a boatload of talent, worth the ticket. For years fellow fans and I have been creating that 'dreamcast' for JC you hear about-and he was one choice for Judas. I'll be seeing the production in May and will
have a first-hand response, but looking and
listening to this take I find him just a bit
indulgent-his vox are trumping the role-it'd be nice to see him invest
the same talent & emotion into the written melody to communicate the character.
artwings 3 years ago
jstfrfnnn - do you really think it was ultimately up to carey to change the melody of the song? if you saw the production youd know that i was way different than the movie, they even left out the song "then we are decided." carey's version fits his voice so much better than the original would have. this plays been in production since before the movie, why not change it a little and experiment with different sounds, everyone heard the original, im glad they gave me something new to experience
pyperiticus 4 years ago
pyperticus - fyi I attended 3 shows of this production last month. But we don't know for a fact, and it was like changing the melody to a classic like "stairway to heaven."
jstfrfnnn1 4 years ago
In my opinion, Glover's interpretation adds a fresh spin on the song. Mr. Anderson played with the melody during the AD Tour. It adds soul to it.
