Two reasons: One, that's how it's done in the demo I based this version off of. Two, I like playing exactly what the musicians play, and they seldom play the melody because they sing it. When I watch music covers on Youtube I like them better without the melody so I can sing along. It sounds robotic and contrived when you add the melody.
