You've shown us the activites you guys do inside. The typical everyday stuff we do at home. But what about outside activities like sledding? Isn't that a hill back there @ 3:33 ?
Not entirely accurate, but good enough to show friends/fam the gist of it. I did a year at pole in 05/06 and I'm PQ'd for 10/11 see you guys there. Getting pretty excited all over again. Cheers
To @Hunnenhorst and @GravityGrave: I just found these youtube videos. I am in the process of getting PQed and hoping I pass for the Winter-over 2010-2011 at the pole! Perhaps we will meet! :) Good Luck to you both! Toni
@Hunnenhorst Haha, well perhaps I'm getting a little ahead of myself, I just submitted my offer letter, and I'm receiving the large packet of forms sometime today. I haven't gone through any tests as of yet. Also, right now I'm an Alternate, but James (manager) was telling me that my chances of going down there as a Primary are very good.
Oh right, I'm probably going to need on of those huh...
I am a lic 100 gross ton capt ..US Merchant Marine I speak Spanish and English great!!!I commercial crabbed for over 10 years in the Bering sea.....so Im as tough as any south pole wieny ....so if you need a seasoned galactic analyst sign me up....been there done that......I will bring the my world famous Lasagnia recipe!! you guys looking for high mountainess properties right about now with deep silver mine caverns.......yeeeehaaaa!!!!
Whats the story behind the subice lake under the south pole?I read about it then it disapeared from the news..the dome under the ice?? have you found signs of Atlantis below the ice cap..buried after the last pole change.I believe that every pole change buries the most consuming nation ..because of the great amount of natural resources moved to said nation.thus when the wheel is balanced the most industrial consuming nation and its people end up on the bottom !!!huh ...wheres Nibiru now bro...
You would have thought after 50 odd years they would have had plenty of time to build a tunnel through the ice to the permafrost surface of the continent. It would be very interesting to have a glimpse at a perfectly preserved earth from a distant epoch.
I realize that the ice is some two miles thick and even a modest tunnel to the basement involves a large volume of water. But it's easier than tunneling rock.
The mysteries that lay beneath may be more startling than we could ever imagine.
3rd Coast, This is fascinating. Thank you so much for posting!
Right now I'm reading "Ice Bound" by Dr. Jerri Nielsen. At the time she was stationed at Pole, the new base was still being built, so she lived in the dome. Now I'd like to read a book about life in the new facility... or visit there myself someday if I'm ever that fortunate.
Y'know what? I think Rutgers U. (my school) ought to spend money on putting up a "campus" in Antarctica (ok, it could be just one building, given the costs, but, still... I'd like to see more places built by colleges rather than directly by national governments). Let's face it, since the Antarctica Treaty, the whole continent is a college town anyhow, so we might as well be more open about that fact.
Ive been trying to get a job in Antartica for 5 years now. First off, it helps if you have a science degree or Phd in at least one scientific field. Secondly, you need to be physically and mentally fit to cope with the extremes of temperature and sense of isolation.
Its a fantastic place, but ive heard that it can become loathsome after a few weeks.
Yes but to look at the south pole would be the same as walking out your back garden and staring at the ground. Its just earth. There wont be anything more than flags. And I would rather watch a video about the surrounding area not a two minute close up of snow.
That was very cool, enlightening. I always wondered what it was all about down there. There are quite a few good questions on the comments.. Please keep us posted. Stay warm..
I actually wonder how cool it feels down there. If you've ever experienced a winter in the southern US, it's actually much more uncomfortable in comparison to the northern US, and this is because of the humidity. I can't expect that it's humid down at the pole.
This video is fantastic. I have always been attracted to hostile weather environments, especially those where individuals could retain certain conveniences from home. Very nicely done!
HEY Tom good to see you I had a great time insulating your telescop and my wife wants to thank you for getting me hooked on merlot you SPT guys n gals take care
amazing...thanks for your time and effort...I do wonder about pollution though, all that light and heat....having said that I would love to join you guys.....
How interesting the video !!!!my cousin from argentina has been in Sobral BASE Latitud 82 south in 1967....please post more videos about the regular day there, with such low temperatures.....i live in miami now.... quite a diference !
Thanks for sharing.... you people must be Darn cold down there... the things I want to know... What do you guys see coming from the south at about a 30 degree angle from us????
The old station looks like it would suck to live in. That's awesome y'all brought your guitars. It must be a real bummer when you loses a pick or break a string. Thanks for the vid.
You sound like you do the world a favour by naming the station as Amundsen-Scott, but in reality it is an obligation. Regarding the flag, it doesnt have to be the original, as long as it is Norwegian. The South Pole is not U.S. land
i guess the only thing they could find to film with in antartica was a potato

They go off Christchurch New Zealand time. Because it is the last place you go before comming to Antarctica.
ratsdp 2 years ago
For simplicity purposes, they go off from New Zealand time, because all flights to the base come through Christchurch, New Zealand.

What are you hoping to find, and what advantage view of space do you have from there ?
And Lastly... Have you seen this rouge planet people are speaking of called Nibiru or Planet X...?
