  • They just closed my local track today, the only regularly open one in southern California, so it looks like we'll go back to racing in the streets...

  • I got a sixty-nine Chevy with a 396

Fuelie heads and a Hurst on the floor

She's waiting tonight down in the parking lot

    Outside the Seven-Eleven store

  • great song !!!

  • thanks for posting

  • Its IMPOSSIBLE to have a "396 fuelie heads" Impossible from chevy on that 396 engine, did not exist. Great song though anyways...

  • man this song is so powerful, lyrics like ''But now there's wrinkles around my baby's eyes And she cries herself to sleep at night'' And ''She stares off alone into the night With the eyes of one who hates for just being born'' seriously hit you hard, very powerful song

  • I had a '69 Chevy Malibu SS with a 396. Blew off a Corvette on I-75 between Lexington and Cincinnati. The guy almost died when a 5'2" girl beat him!! Love this song. Good memories.....

  • @Teresaolliz : do you have a photo of your car?

  • I love this song to death, but i blow my eardrums trying to hear it over the roar of my olds 455....worth it!

  • Micsoda dal, micsoda szöveg!

  • This song reminds me of my dad when he used to take me for a ride in his 1981 malibu with a 350 he built that was the strongest running 350 i have ever seen.He would go so fast that the speedometer needle would top out at the 120 mark and we never actually knew how fast we would go.I was 13-14 and that is still my favorite car i have rode in.Thank god for back roads.

  • One of the best songs ever. After all this time I still have my 68 charger. It was a good time back then.

  • how the fuck does he have fuelie heads (for SBC) on a 396 (BBC)?

  • @silverado271 a 396 IS a sbc yo dog home skillett, he needs to put some 22's on that bitch, cany paint and poppin that thing

  • @silverado271 LoL yeah he's a songwriter and not a mechanic... Maybe he's one of thoses guys calling every old school chevy performance heads "fuelie heads".

  • @mat355 he actually dragged

  • Ahh... now I want to go work on my '79 Trans Am. That car will be bad when I get the 403 and 350 turbo built.

  • First song ima play when I get my new tranny n my Porsche and it back on the road

  • @brandonb1944 No offensive or anything but it just doesn't seem like the song you play in a Porsche. More of a Chevy, Ford or Mopar song.

  • The song of the street racer.

  • Live, he flushes the out the gorgous ending with a much richer sound, as instrument by instrument the entire band joins in. Especially beautiful is Bruce, playing his Duane Eddyish twangy guitar. They build to a crescendo, & then back off, only to do it again. It is so georgeous I could listen to for an hour. The Hyde Park (2009) video shows this especially well because you see each members contribution. The whole is far more than the sum of the parts - 3 full of Bruce channeling God.

  • im 17 and im still driving my frist car i got 2 years ago which is a 1965 buick skylark, with a 310 wildcat. i know its not a chevy and i dont race it, but i love this song to death and i ride along the beach with all the windows down listening to it.

thank you bruce. they call you the boss for a reason

  • I'm 25 been listening to bruce for about 3 years now, Never got into this album until I saw the special on HBO. This is real music. It's magic.

  • This is such a great mix. The bass knocks me out every time.

  • Pure Brilliance.

  • Just have to be white, thats reason enough in the southwest.

  • Bruce and his E Street Band have gotten me through so many difficult times in my life. God bless him, for the music he makes!

  • Tonight, tonight the strips just right.

  • @haloP221 +1.

  • @yippee42 'Human trash'? Do me a favor: Take that ignorant garbage somewhere else. That's not what this music is about, and I'm sure it's not what the REST of us are about.

  • @OnlyTy91 Unless you own your own business YOU will have to compete with people trying to work through identity theft(crooks).I don't know where you live but its not easy here in the southwest.Times have changed since this song was put out.Its getting harder to accomplish the completion of a car that is safe with quality parts because of good paying jobs getting harder to come by.I know what I mean.I have been referred to as trash by people that do not like musclecars,H-D,etc.

  • @yippee42 It's no excuse to hate on an entire race of people, though. I've been taken in and treated a lot better by some Mexicans, than I have some people of my own race. I'm sorry to hear about your business woes, but it's no excuse to be bitter against Mexicans. MY main gripe with illegal immigrants, is most of them don't wanna assimilate themselves into the culture. But the majority are good people, trying to escape that horrible drug war, they're having down there.

  • @OnlyTy91 What makes it harder is our president mollycoddles Mexicos president insulting America.Mexicos president saying Americas hunger for thier shitty drugs. Then OUR president drags that POS here to insult this country even more.I have no desire to turn into a primate in my own country because Mexico cannot fix thier own problems.Illegal immigrants can stay in thier own shitty country with thier shitty ways.25 cleaned out of my last job because of stolen ID's.Yeah, they ASSIMILATE-ILLEGALLY.

  • @OnlyTy91 Then you should live in Mexico,so when that drug money comes in you can build your musclecar and even gold plated weapons! I have dealt even with thier loser bitches.Only thing they want is your paycheck, over 10 yrs ago told to me face to face by 1 of them. Now its the other way around.Because the system has been so bled by these bitches/anchor babies my jobless benefits have been gone for the last 4-5 months.Any of THIER bitches can show me THIER money, and with no offspring/thugs.

  • @yippee42 I've got an idea: Maybe if you don't want them and some other people calling you 'trash', you shouldn't ACT like trash. What a stupid comment.

  • @yippee42 Nothing to add, except learn to spell.

  • @MWCR Thanks for the sarcasm ----.

  • @OnlyTy91 Most are trying to escape poverty that most us can't even imagine. I have trouble blaming someone for searching for a better life for themselves, and their families. It easy for politicians to appeal to our worst instincts, to blame our probelms on immigrants. For Pet's sakes, we're all immigrants.

Bruce wrote an entire album about this, "The Ghost of Tom Joad" (1995). Check out, Across the Border, especially the version at Giants stadium, with Emmylou Harris, who covered it.

  • @CPSJSMSUUMUGA Oh yeah, man. I 100% agree with you. And literally like, 50,000 people have died in the past 4 years because of that drug war, so I can't imagine why ANYBODY would wanna stay in Mexico. They're welcome here, as far as I'm concerned.

  • This is such a powerful song especially to those that really did race in the streets. In N.O., La it was the Lakefront, then to Wisner Blvd., Marconi, or Haynes Blvd. every weekend in the early 80's.

Saffron Brn metallic '79 vette, .030" over 350, MSD 6A, 700cfm Holley, Edelbrock Scorpion Intake, 280 Isky Cam, Stage II NOS. 12:26 1/4@128mph.

Amoco 93 octane gas was 64-cents a gal! I sure miss those days.

  • @AnAmericanSon I never did race in the street, but had a 72 shortbox chevy pickup.I custom painted scallops on a fire engine red canvass in my fathers barn/garage in the mid- late 80's in my late teens.350/auto in it.1986 graduating year.78 Nova hatchback I minitubbed,9-inch ford rear axle, etc on the back burner now.Doubt if I will race in the street after completed.Too much work/time/money by my own hand to ruin it in a split second.

  • @yippee42 I know what you mean. My car was totaled on Oct 1, 1983 by a drunk driver who ran a red light. Sort of ironic after all of the racing I did.

Don't ever let anyone come between you and your car, or truck, it sounds like you put alot of yourself into it. Otherwise you might do what I still do sometimes, wake up in the middle of the night and wonder why my car isn't there...almost 30-years later. God Bless.

  • @AnAmericanSon I know someone that had a 69 Camaro(highschool class of 1986) that got hit head on as he was doing the speed limit.Ruined he ended up with a 67 icebox white Camaro.Actually a better body style/color than the 2-tone puke green 69 he had.Yeah...sometimes it is not the musclecar drivers fault.Due to NY state salt/rust and a rod knocking=in the boneyard the 72.Here in AZ not that way with rust free bodies waiting to be modified for high speed battle at the strip. If I was wealthy...

  • @yippee42 I got my block prepped, pistons, rings, balanced, shot peened, magnafluxed, bearings, with a valve job on the heads for $800 (1980). A friend of mine did the machine work, while I assembled and tweaked everything. A friend of mine at "Custom Built Transmissions", Carey built my trans for $150. I had to pull it out, and bring it to him. That included all new clutches, and valve body drilled out, and sprague.

Now it would cost an arm, and a leg. How times have changed.

  • @AnAmericanSon To add as a person gets older they are more particular about how to build a car covering all the bases.A welder/fabricator here,I speced out a 355 here in AZ with all forged bottom end, cam, that will turn 425 horsepower after all the correct top end parts have been bought/installed.Performance Chevrolet screwed it together/machine work.Only thing stock is the block-4 bolt mains.Super T-10,linkage,foot pedals waiting for bolt on racing parts for correct install.Last few yrs.

  • Excellent post......really great sound quality!! R.I.P. -- Big Man.....

  • @jeffthrow6892 Well said.40 yrs with Mr. Springsteen has to be an eternal party.Very few have done what he has,and I bet he is up in the heavens smiling down at his many fans. This is someone that will/would be very hard to replace.RIP Mr. Clarence Clemons.

  • Love it...

  • Racing in the streets is my favorite song. I had a 73 nova I bought off a friend. He had slid it into a ditch and bent a upper and lower control arm. He also blew the 350 trany and put a turbo glide in it. I fixed the control arms and replaced the trany with a 4 spd manual trany from a Vega. 1rst gear was a killer. it would launch like a rocket. and then you just cranked the rest of the gears. I miss that car so much.

  • @pjw58 Time to build another/better one.

  • @pjw58 Awesome, I had a 73 Nova SS, I rolled going 110 miles per hour, me and my friend and my brother all walked away unhurt, the car was so destroyed everyone thought we died, after we left the hospital we went to McDOnalds on Zeeb Rd. People came up hugging us having heard we were dead. Keep it on the tracks guys, far safer, and no passengers, why carry the extra weight anyway. God Bless you, He has me.

  • I got 78 Nova with a 355,aluminum heads(future purchase)and a 4 on the floor,(super T-10 I really do have).I do hope I am able to complete it,especially after mini-tubbing it,9-inch Ford rear axle with traction lock,20 gallon fuel cell,roll bars,etc. Ironic this song born in 1978...a good year.

  • @yippee42

I got a 75 Nova Hatchback, 350 that my best friend and I built. Offenhauser Intake with a holly 650 double pumper carb, 3 speed auto on the floor ..."Some guys they just give up living and start dying little by little, piece by piece. Some guys come home from work and wash up and go racin' in the street"

  • @GiantRobot751 Glad to hear it.Sometimes I feel that I am the only 1 trying to keep American horsepower alive.Thank you.

  • I swear he wrote this song about two lane blacktop

    "I got 55 Chevy with 454...and a 4 speed on the floor.

  • Thank you so much for posting this!

Could you please also post the title track "Darkness On The Edge Of Town"? (The studio version like this one is.)

  • Thanks!

Yes, no problem... here you can find the song!

    /watch?v=zS5qRG_no-I

  • "Darkness on the edge of town" was the best album ever constructed by Mr. Springsteen in my mind/my opinion. This song as well as many of his others speaks of America/true events. In an interview of him his answer was--"Where do these people end up/thier future?" which shows to me a caring individual that thinks past different happenings/events in life whether good or bad.

  • @yippee42 East street shuffle would easily be the most underrated album of his

  • @flyers2817 Thank you for answering.Grace from the darkness every time someone takes the time to write a few words on this song/Mr. Springsteen-his music.True..his live music such as "Thunder Road",etc is a real testament to a different time in this country when American V-8 Muscle ruled the streets. To the purists/hardcore it still does rule the street, but unfortunately we all get older and it seems to fade because of lack of money, resources, garage to build, etc.

  • Barry Grant shut down after 26 yrs.I hope this is not a growing trend.
