  • This is 100 percent accurate.

  • doing events at a moments notice, "voluntaring" to help set up said events, force to take care and play chauffeur for more successful people. this is exactly like amateur boxing but with less punches to the face

  • Yeah bringer shows are kind of a rip off, hey?

I know it;s brutal, but when I've just done open mics, it is awesome though.

  • ...being a comedian sucks...

  • If you're a comedisn and u do or even consider doing bringers u are a sucka. If u pay your way to do sets u are a sucka. If u have to resort to any of that then you're simply not that good and should not be worried about getting paid yet.

  • Great....that sounds fair hahahahahhahaha

  • dam that face is ugly shit/ nice video i am the like 125

  • so true....

  • hate that 10 people bullshit

  • This is hilarious......I have heard this speech....

  • Holy crap this is hilarious! Way to hit the nail on the head guys!!!!

  • HA HA HA.... EXACTLY!

  • i love it this is awesome ROFLMAO!!!

  • HA HA AHA HA!! So freaking true...this is why I do things differently now...lol...spot on.

  • Great Great Great

    This is awesome

    The Truth is told

  • So true! I cried after I laughed. Did you get this perspective first hand or was it related to you. All the best.

    "That sounds Fair!" priceless!

  • hahaha, I'm a year in and I'm probably going to kill myself right now

  • Great that sounds fair and true.

  • haha poor Dylan got his post removed. Well once again the Truth hurts. There is no money in Stand Up Comedy unless you are a Pro and that takes 10 years or unless some pro picks you 2 be his new best friend then it'd don't matter if your funny or not he picked you so you get to do all the good spots anyways b/c the pro loves you. Then funny people who don't have tons of friends get passed up b/c comedy room runners are incapable of getting their own promotion out to get people in they need yours

  • "Great that sounds fair" that kills me every time! haha..I love this..so true.

  • Ahhh....Glad to see that the MORE HITS you get...the more people are siding with me. I guess not everyone is in the dark. I was starting to feeling lonely. BTW "Dealing with an Agent" is up...and it pulls in another level of the business.

  • to long for it not to be whiny

  • The Rebuttal video is much more realistic....

  • @Meganfreedom

    It;s tough for both people.

Comics can be very funny and work hard, but still have to work up a name for themselves and aren't gonna be able to make any money for a long time, and the club owners aren't gonna care until they have exposure,

But the club owners have to draw audiences and make money, and having a bunch of new comics who noone has ever heard of doesn't do that, and you have to deal with a lot of crappy, unprofessional comics as well as good ones.

  • This is one part of the business. This shouldn't discourage anyone. if you're funny, like actually funny, you'll get booked trust me.

  • Exactly right! The Chicago scene isn't this bad (you can perform at multiple clubs), but it's mostly true.

  • @dylanjrhymer Hang tight - Part 2 Coming soon -

  • This is so freakin funny, cuz it never seemed logical to me the way things come abouthahah

  • This is Yuk Yuks to a TEE

  • how much does it pay? no

how much does it pay? no

how much does it pay? no

  • That's awesome and completely accurate. "that is fair" is the exact reason there will never be a union.

  • That's awesome and completely accurate. "that is fair" is the exact reason they will never be a union.

  • That's awesome and completely accurate

  • Sometimes the truth hurts.

  • Keep it up satire works!

It does for us in the UK anyway ... check out the

    pearshapedcomedy CRAPP campaign

You can shame bookers into changing their ways

  • This deserves a fucking award.

  • Oh god, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I don't feel good. I would put my head in the oven to end it all, but it's electric.

  • Sad but true!

  • SAD BUT TRUE!

  • Well done. And unfortunately, this video isn't exaggerating.

(Whenever I get the urge to do stand-up again, it eventually leads to one of these meetings... and cures me of the urge.)

  • the last "no" has a great pause after it.

  • holy shit this was great.

  • Funny, tragic, and truthful. Sending this to my parents so they understand why I'm still not making any money at it!

  • Loved it, John! That sounds Fair! I cracked up and also cried a little on the inside.

  • The most constructive response to something that is frustrating is to make a joke of it.

  • Yep... this nailed it. Reason I am not doing stand up any more... made me laugh more than a little!

  • Haha this is great! I kind of figured that comics sometimes get the butt-end of the stick. Being a comic is like being a teacher. You have to love what you do, because you don't get paid squat unless you're dang good!

  • Unfortunately, "great, that sounds fair" is something the budding comic is forced to say too often. That's where this video hit home with me.

  • Why do people bother making these videos? Booooooriiiiing! They couldn't find an actual COMEDIAN to tell this joke?

  • Comics, bands, singer-songwriters, filmmakers, actors, writers... it's all the same struggles with respective challenges... in the end the truly talented can rise (or give up!)

  • The comedy business sounds more and more like the wrestling business the more I learn about it...

  • This is the funniest thing that I've seen in a long time. Geez - it's like you knew our pain and made it funnier! 'Bringer' shows can be harsh, but if you know the promoter - it can be a less painful experience. As a comic - I wish I wrote this....it's damn good stuff!

  • wow I dig this, I am so glad that I make my money, doing porn.. but its all about the jokes right?

  • This was hilarious!!! OMG!!!

  • THIS WAS HILARIOUS!!!

  • Man. This is spot on. I'm a Long Island/NYC comic and it pretty much sounds like my week to week schedule. Well done.

  • I can't believe the standup has an ironic green trucker cap. I didn't know that was a big thing, like Hitler jokes.

  • I love this video. I'm a comedian, and all of this is so true. :-D

  • This is the greatest thing I have ever seen. being a comic I know that this is dead on.

  • @soulflycfh42 Even the part where the promoter says "once you play my club you are not allowed to play any other comedy clubs in town?"

  • As a booker that is married to a comic, I find this to be hilariously accurate.

  • Sadly, this is pretty accurate.

  • BRILLIANT!

  • (feels anger)

  • "I really could care less if you are funny or not." Is so chilling. I enjoyed this video a lot.

"We like to keep the shows fresh." Brilliant nuanced piece of conversation. Great job including that one.

  • This is great. I don't think it's whiny at all. I have several friends who are comics, and they'll get a kick out of this. Obviously this wasn't made to complain about clubs; it's a pretty accurate account of what comics go through, and it's very informative to non-comics. And, yes, it's funny, too.

  • @jacobdane Thank YOU ! - Right on point -

  • So true

  • &$& Geť à ƒŗĕe Apρle Ĭpáď fŕōm my přoƒĭļę

  • Brilliant. And true. Especially in LA. But not always.

  • This video took off, huh? Not viral, but impressive. I can see how comics would like it. It's NOT fair, what we go through. Many clubs have rules like this. Agencies and managers are the same way. "No unsolicited material" is a standard in Hollywood.

comedyisnotpretty10 - It looks like we know each other in real life, and you know I'm not one of the bad guys. Sorry to dismantle your video, but today there are a lot of Newbies feeling entitled. Thought you where one of them. Carry on...

  • @Meganfreedom Hey man, even if this guy was a new comic, why would you jump down his throat? The content of the videos true, whether somebodies been a comic 15 years or 15 days. All in the same boat.

  • As one of those people supporting her comic daughter I found this absolutely brilliant. It's of course absolute truth. Bravo. I love the "No" and "That's sounds fair".

  • One of my first gigs was at a club in NYC. I'm not going to name any names but it rhymes with "Comix". It was a 15 person bringer, which I didn't know was absurdly high. I was led to believe that if I was good, I would receive actual work. My 15 people had to sit through a lineup of about 20 comics.

The booker had absolutely no interest in the new talent. He was looking for people who haven't been in the game long enough to realize they were getting fucked over. It's a rough business.

  • @YAYCONFORMITY 15 is WAY too high. It's usually 8-10 people in the other clubs. Looks like the club that rhymes with "Comix" were trying to screw the newbies even worse than the other clubs.

  • This is one of my favorite things ever !

  • I feel like the ones who will truly understand this are comics or comedy club nerds.

  • DHildeman - The irony is Mario is one of the good guys who gets it. I was just as surprised as you that he did not appreciate this clip more. To me it was more a jab at us, as comics, and what we put up with to hone our craft, and build our careers than any kind of indictment on any particular club. If anything, it's an anonymous riot from the prisoners toward the guards and warden. - I guess it's my "Opera music through the intercom", Tim Robbins - Shawshank Redemption moment -

  • Haaa! This is fucking great!!!! Nice work!

  • Meganfreedom complains about you whining, but he/she is a whiny douche. This IS funny. For someone who claims to be a comic to not be able to 'Get' this or why it was made shows that they're probably not that funny themselves. I'm a comic, and I also book bringers. I laughed, because EVERY comic has gone through this. Funny stuff.

  • wtf why did manchina likes this

  • Oh.....I can't wait...

I'm going to try that line everytime I'm getting F'd over by someone.

"You were going 54 in a 55 MPH zone; I'm going to have to write you a ticket."

    "That sounds fair."

  • I had to wait 12 seconds for it to buffer... I want my 5 minutes back. I know I know... "That sounds fair!"

  • this is really funny

  • comedyisnotpretty10 i applaude you for your name because it simply makes sense in relation to the ugly side of comedy

  • what is that thing sticking out of the dudes striped pants?

  • so funny!

  • its funny how true this is...well done.

  • this made me depressed

  • i'm trying to laugh .. but i cant , sorry :)

  • @machinima HOLY SHIT DUDEE

  • @machinima Great. That sounds fair.

  • LMAO!!!! so so true "Great! That sounds fair"

  • link is mario mateo dot com forwardslash birbiglia dot M O V

  • Okay, fair.

Is it funny? It's amusing at best. I still find it to be "complainy" and whiny. That's why I didn't just jump on board, like everyone else, as if this were something punk rock, or "we are stickin' it to the man!"

There are good reasons for clubs to have those policies, the first of which is today everyone and their mother is a "comedian." And it's getting ridiculous.

I posted a clip recently. I'm not the only comic who thinks this way:

  • Mario,

Why make this? Because it's funny!

Why not name the club? Because the comic is not talking about one club in particular. Every major comedy club in the country has the exact same policies. Improv does not charge at the door for open mic shows. Many clubs do. You truly missed the point of the clip.

The clip is not slamming the clubs, but poking some fun at the comics.

Why hide? Because I am one of them, and I like to work.

    Again, was it funny?

PS - You are NOT a dick.

  • Look who ever it is, I probably know you, and you're gonna always think I'm a dick. But this is how I really feel about it. Don't like The Improv? Don't do their club. Find other venues, try to go on the road. Audition for other things. But don't blame the system. You are not going to change it. It sucks, man, but thats the truth. You are the only person responsible for your success (or lack of).

  • @Meganfreedom Good to hear someone else's perspective on this. This video is hilarious and depressing and I understand the frustration behind it, but Meganfreedon is right about success having to do with whatever you put into it. It's tough but the road can be navigated in numerous other ways besides just clubs.

  • Buddy, because you contradict yourself. If you are okay with the way "that club" (which let's just say it, you're too coward to say The Improv) handles their business, then why make a cartoon slamming them, while hiding your identity?

This video puts yourself in the role of the victim. "Oh, poor Stand-up comic, if only he could get a break, Awww..."

Bullshit. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and blaming other people for your inability to succeed in this game.

    .

  • Ok, Mario,

I still don't understand. You are done with this, that is your right. What on Earth from my response proved your "Thesis"? I am just about agreeing with you. Why has this clip so rubbed you the wrong way? I don't get it? If it bothers you so much, don't respond to this, and let it go.

  • As I figured, the poster is an idiot. I'm done with this. Oh, and by the way this is Mario Mateo.

  • Meganfreedom-

1 - The point of the video is to be funny. Is it funny?

2 - Would anything in the conversation which occurs in the clip had changed had the comic been talented? Anything? I think not.

3 - I think the most poignant part of the clip is the comics comment at the very end "See you next Wednesday". The comic chooses to participate. Nothing is forced on him or her.

4 - I don't even find the clip that anti-comedy club - They are running a business. As is their right.

  • This is creating a buzz in South Florida. But, can you really take a side with the comic when he remains anonymous? Maybe he sucks. Maybe he's not ready.

If the point of the video is to show how unfair and hard it is to break into comedy, hey, welcome to show business. If it were easy, everyone would be famous.

Chances are the comic who created this probably isn't ready to be a "paid comic" anyway. Keep blaming the club bookers. I'm sure it's THEIR fault you're not a big star yet.
