@SirotaKurcina what you can see at 1:17 looks more like the slide technic, the heel toe is easier to play, because you save your stamina during the double bass triplets !
@locoflaw just for clarification... you do know that Lars is one of two original members of Metallica, correct? That being said, he is part of their roots.
@1ChOwSkI1 I LOVE Metallica! And Lars BELONG there. It´s where he´s able to express he´s uniqueness as a drummer. He sounds to me, like he is "at home" there. AND awsome!!! And believe you me... NO one is perfect ALL the time...
@locoflaw Well as i can see an expert to criticize Lars (laughing)... why you not go and play instead of Lars and do also what Lars do for 30+ years? Btw I bet you are not even capable to hit a snare lolz and they only one that seems to sux is you...Go go Larzzz old school for the win!!!!! HAIL METALLICA!!!!! HAIL METAL!!!!!
@SSSoM3 no, what i'm saying is that bad joints come with age for many people... i'm guessing that's what has happened with lars. If playing double bass puts him in sheer agony, then yes, age is a reasonable excuse, even if he's in the biggest band in history.
To the author of the video: I don't think you understand. Lars Ulrich can drum quadruplets. Haven't you heard and justice for all? Quadriplets with one foot. Double bass is pussy shit compared to what Lars Ulrich can do

It's not all about double bass pedal. Those drummers you just named. I bet they use those beginner pedals that when you hit it once it makes a triplet. Lars uses the pedals where you atually have to put muscle into it. Listen to Dyers Eve studii Version. He was 20 back then. He FIFTY now.So shut up, reformat your computer, and go listen to country
I saw this song performed BEFORE the album was released in the later 80's in Cleveland Coll. Lars absolutely BLEW everyone away when he played it correctly. It was FAST and spot on. Back then,,,fast double bass wasn't as common. Honestly, it was impressive to hear then. >THEN<
Okay, so, since when has "Double-bass" mean going fast? I have always believed that who ever can do double bass was a badass because you can use both your feet for the rhythm, and now its just about doing it fast..... freaking Death Metal and their shitty drummers have made fast double bass the "norm" to be good

@MegaNakki69 thats because he is just bad... just listen how he's struggling with it god damn thats not professional thats just bad especially for a drummer of a band which has so much reputation...
Lars is the best Drummer in the world :D James the best Singer and Rythim Guitarist :D Cliff Burton was the best Bass player....Robert is okey ;) Kirk Hammet is the best lead Guitarist :D
he plays double bass at the album speed in fight fire with fire( live in mexico) in the middle seccion of the song. There is double bass drum my friend.
I love lars !! its my biggest influence, but in dyers eve played in mexico city( i was there and own the dvd) he only play sincopated bass drum, the real drum riff go at 16 notes per bar!
I respect him! he developed this way of playing metal! metallica rules!
@MrSuchy945 i've just made a video showing a technique(well known heel-toe) for playing this.but i just never said that I could play it..i said a decent drummer should,and i'm not considering myself one yet.peace!bye!
I think there isn't double bass in this performance, but I think Lars is a great drummer, not everybody that plays drums have his skills. Mike Portnoy and Mike Mangini are a very great drummers. They are in another level of creation and skills on drums. But still I thinks Lars plays very well.
its not constant like it is on the record....which he makes a mistake on if you listen, Starting one verse he misses the very start of it. Altho i think lars is cool !
bass drum paterns a lot more interestin to listen to than that death metal type shit thats goin on in most metal bands now as well as hearin it you feel it which is more important
Let´s make something clear, maybe he hasnt had the best drum skills, but what i admire of him, its how when he starts working with james at the studio makes the best albums of metal
@jesusmouth Omg his drum solo at the San Diego DT concert made me think "Mike Portnoy who?" ... though i still think MP is still one of the greatest if not the greatest drummers out there... Mike Mangini is up there with him!
@masteropuppetz66 mike mangini by far surpasses anything this ass clown can even dream of thinking about doing....portnoy is surely better then lars but that please don't compare a true drummer to a shitty one thanks
@spacegaiden lol I wasn't comparing Lars to Mangini or Portnoy. I was comparing Mangini to Portnoy in Dream Theater. Yes, it is absolutely correct to say that Portnoy and Mangini are in a different universe than Lars. Hell, a 15 year old drummer who has been playing for a year is better than Lars LOL
@masteropuppetz66 Lars is the WORST. Manginini is ONE OF the BEST. Portnoy is in the upper echelons of mediocreville. Can we agree on this scale? hahah
@spacegaiden Mike Portnoy isn't in mediocreville. I don't know where you even begin to come up with assessment, unless you are just a Mangini fanboy lol. Mike P is definitely one of the best drummers out there. His work speaks for itself, as well as the dozen or so Drummer of the Year awards (i think he had like 8 in a row at one point) as well as being the youngest inductee ever into the modern drummer hall of fame.
@masteropuppetz66 Well it is simply my opinion. Drummer of the Year awards sounds cool, but sorry he just is not all that great to me *shrug* no big deal. Sounds like YOU are the fanboi here.....and I am familiar enough with Portnoy's work to have formed my own personal opinion. Sorry if it upsets you....Portnoy IS good....but he is NOWHERE NEAR the best. not even close....
@spacegaiden Ok, list your top 10 drummers (or even top 5) so I know where you are coming from. Portnoy is not as technically proficient as Mangini or other drummers, but he is still really technically gifted. However, I believe his track writing is what makes him one of the best. He really writes some cool, innovative and unique drum tracks. Take the song Blind Faith, an amazing drum track! .. and lets not forget his drumming on SFAM
@spacegaiden And i was talking about Mangini's San Diego Dream Theater concert drum solo this past December, NOT the Live Shit San Diego Lars drum solo in case you thought that lol
I love how everyone seems to think lars sucks etc., sure he may not be amazing compared to the drummers of today, but they had had him as a role model to learn from. he's still better than 99% of the morons who comment on his videos and say he sucks . same with jimi hendrix, there are guitarists today who could slaughter jimi, but how many of them had jimi as a role model as well. shit evolves because of the greats that came before and innovated. get your head out of your asses people.
I'm not a drummer and I've stopped the video. Jesus christ that's some amateur-playing drumming. I'm sorry it is. I just came from Derek Roddy and Navene Koperweis.
believe double 16th destroys you, it absotively kills and takes years to even come close to Lars speed. So it's either jealousy or............nevermind. Jealousy, the wee green beastie.
Back in the day, when Metallica was still a snarling beast getting drunk, touring and what not, Lars had the speed to play every song note for note no problem. Listen to the 1987 record for Creeping Death NOT the cd the effing Vinyl. Note for note every track. But when you are playing the length of setlists these guys play, you can't blame Lars for taking it easy so as not to burn out before the end of the setlist. You seen how many bottles of fluid he has at his feet???
Yo,in response to ur comment yes i can hear triple bass drum and yes i know lars can do double bass im a big metallica fan but what he's doing here is triples like u said.Lars used to be able to do savage fast double kick but not anymore im afraid, dont get ur knickers in a twist man!!
I can hear the bass drum on the beats, that's fine. And I can heat bass guitar playing some 16th notes. But where is the bass drum on the 16th notes or just somewhere between the beats? I can't hear any good evidence of double bass. Not that I care if he does it, just that this video doesn't prove or disprove anything.
ok people. getting old is not an excuse for sloppy ass drumming. neil peart, whom is 10 years older than lars- mike mangini who was born the same year as lars- are great examples of older rock and metal drummers that are still brutal as fuck AND playing their old songs EXACTLY the way they played them 20+ years ago, if not better. the fact that lars is getting older doesnt have shit to do with it.
@smoothhitman1 dam right.lombardo is a beast. whoever posted this video with a title like "the best proof ever" is a complete fucking idiot, and obviously not a drummer. its completely clear that he isnt playing this the way it was played on the album. and im not even sure he ever played it on the album. i cant find one single live video of them playing dyers eve where he plays continuous 16th note double bass. wouldnt surprise me if it was looped or triggered because he couldnt play it.
@CaptainDirtFace I agree... but being lazy will have an effect on his playing...Neil and Dave both are tech. more sound than lars... he is a power drummer that does not care anymore...
...Also, with 12 measures in a run, sixteenth-note double-bass puts that at 192 bass-drum hits. It's played at about 204 beats per minute. I wouldn't expect any 45-year-old man to be able to do that. I wasn't at the Justice recording sessions, so I don't know if the double-bass parts were "Audioshopped" in, but I assume they weren't. He's twenty years older. Cut him a break. Most of us can't do that at our average age of 23.
@MKDumas1981 jesus christ, that is the worst excuse ever. seriously, you can look up videos of jazz drummers in their seventies with fucking INSANE chops. you don't automatically get worse with age, it's not like your body starts breaking down at forty. mike mangini for example, he's lars's age and still one of the fastest all-around guys in the world.
I would like everyone to keep this in mind: They never played Dyer's Eve live while Jason was in the band. As such, this performance couldn't have been any earlier than 2004. If my James Hetfield clock is working the way it should be, this would be the middle of 2009. With a birthdate of December 26, 1963, that would make him 45 during this show, turning 46 that December. When ...And Justice For All was recorded in 1988. Using the same birthdate, he would have been 25....
Stop talking shit. Metal and music in general isn't playing double bass pedals faster than a speed of light -.- He playing drums with more feeling than most of drumers that are beasts. He has that groovy beats that is his signature. He's great and he had influence on more drumers than anyone else... End of story!

he plays double bass at the album speed in fight fire with fire( live in mexico) in the middle seccion of the song. There is double bass drum my friend.
2112pp 4 weeks ago
I love lars !! its my biggest influence, but in dyers eve played in mexico city( i was there and own the dvd) he only play sincopated bass drum, the real drum riff go at 16 notes per bar!
I respect him! he developed this way of playing metal! metallica rules!
2112pp 4 weeks ago
I would love to see one of u doing this at that age.. play the entire song like the album and then continue a concert....
SebastianTKD1986 4 weeks ago
well people ,there is double bass ! i just listened to it again and again, with stereo headphones, it is fucking there !
MuscleFreak2796 4 weeks ago
fuck on this double bass, dyers eve is awesome with db and without !

i just listened to the "drum track" of this, and theres no continuous double bass. it sounds just like this....??? i dont see the argument here

a decent drummer should do this with a single pedal

I think there isn't double bass in this performance, but I think Lars is a great drummer, not everybody that plays drums have his skills. Mike Portnoy and Mike Mangini are a very great drummers. They are in another level of creation and skills on drums. But still I thinks Lars plays very well.

all i hear is pure slop, as usual

its not constant like it is on the record....which he makes a mistake on if you listen, Starting one verse he misses the very start of it. Altho i think lars is cool !

@richardmap Clearly you don't know about Dave Mustaine. Do some research into Dave and Megadeth. You may learn a few things.

Having said that Mike Mangini is same age and 1000x faster (literally look him up).
jesusmouth 1 month ago
@jesusmouth Omg his drum solo at the San Diego DT concert made me think "Mike Portnoy who?" ... though i still think MP is still one of the greatest if not the greatest drummers out there... Mike Mangini is up there with him!
masteropuppetz66 1 month ago
@masteropuppetz66 mike mangini by far surpasses anything this ass clown can even dream of thinking about doing....portnoy is surely better then lars but that please don't compare a true drummer to a shitty one thanks
spacegaiden 1 month ago
@spacegaiden lol I wasn't comparing Lars to Mangini or Portnoy. I was comparing Mangini to Portnoy in Dream Theater. Yes, it is absolutely correct to say that Portnoy and Mangini are in a different universe than Lars. Hell, a 15 year old drummer who has been playing for a year is better than Lars LOL
masteropuppetz66 1 month ago
@masteropuppetz66 Lars is the WORST. Manginini is ONE OF the BEST. Portnoy is in the upper echelons of mediocreville. Can we agree on this scale? hahah
spacegaiden 1 month ago
@spacegaiden Mike Portnoy isn't in mediocreville. I don't know where you even begin to come up with assessment, unless you are just a Mangini fanboy lol. Mike P is definitely one of the best drummers out there. His work speaks for itself, as well as the dozen or so Drummer of the Year awards (i think he had like 8 in a row at one point) as well as being the youngest inductee ever into the modern drummer hall of fame.
masteropuppetz66 1 month ago
@masteropuppetz66 Well it is simply my opinion. Drummer of the Year awards sounds cool, but sorry he just is not all that great to me *shrug* no big deal. Sounds like YOU are the fanboi here.....and I am familiar enough with Portnoy's work to have formed my own personal opinion. Sorry if it upsets you....Portnoy IS good....but he is NOWHERE NEAR the best. not even close....
spacegaiden 1 month ago
@spacegaiden Ok, list your top 10 drummers (or even top 5) so I know where you are coming from. Portnoy is not as technically proficient as Mangini or other drummers, but he is still really technically gifted. However, I believe his track writing is what makes him one of the best. He really writes some cool, innovative and unique drum tracks. Take the song Blind Faith, an amazing drum track! .. and lets not forget his drumming on SFAM
masteropuppetz66 1 month ago
@spacegaiden And i was talking about Mangini's San Diego Dream Theater concert drum solo this past December, NOT the Live Shit San Diego Lars drum solo in case you thought that lol
masteropuppetz66 1 month ago
@masteropuppetz66 I will check out this Drum solo of Mangini....there are MANY more of him though from WAY before Dream Theater.

He does what he does better than anyone else, he can play fast double kick but not for long. He's alright.

I love how everyone seems to think lars sucks etc., sure he may not be amazing compared to the drummers of today, but they had had him as a role model to learn from. he's still better than 99% of the morons who comment on his videos and say he sucks . same with jimi hendrix, there are guitarists today who could slaughter jimi, but how many of them had jimi as a role model as well. shit evolves because of the greats that came before and innovated. get your head out of your asses people.

believe double 16th destroys you, it absotively kills and takes years to even come close to Lars speed. So it's either jealousy or............nevermind. Jealousy, the wee green beastie.
SpikeModZit 1 month ago 2
Back in the day, when Metallica was still a snarling beast getting drunk, touring and what not, Lars had the speed to play every song note for note no problem. Listen to the 1987 record for Creeping Death NOT the cd the effing Vinyl. Note for note every track. But when you are playing the length of setlists these guys play, you can't blame Lars for taking it easy so as not to burn out before the end of the setlist. You seen how many bottles of fluid he has at his feet???
SpikeModZit 1 month ago
lol since when playing double bass determined skill ? ... this video is trash
Huoha 1 month ago
double bass is when u use two feet to play 16th note patterns. Lars play the trash beat using ONE foot therefore no double bass

I can hear the bass drum on the beats, that's fine. And I can heat bass guitar playing some 16th notes. But where is the bass drum on the 16th notes or just somewhere between the beats? I can't hear any good evidence of double bass. Not that I care if he does it, just that this video doesn't prove or disprove anything.
dante4d 1 month ago
ok people. getting old is not an excuse for sloppy ass drumming. neil peart, whom is 10 years older than lars- mike mangini who was born the same year as lars- are great examples of older rock and metal drummers that are still brutal as fuck AND playing their old songs EXACTLY the way they played them 20+ years ago, if not better. the fact that lars is getting older doesnt have shit to do with it.
CaptainDirtFace 1 month ago 14
@CaptainDirtFace That is sooooo true!
ZEROSYSTEMband 1 month ago
@CaptainDirtFace Agreed. Look at Dave Lombardo. He's 46 years and is better than ever.
smoothhitman1 1 month ago
@smoothhitman1 dam right.lombardo is a beast. whoever posted this video with a title like "the best proof ever" is a complete fucking idiot, and obviously not a drummer. its completely clear that he isnt playing this the way it was played on the album. and im not even sure he ever played it on the album. i cant find one single live video of them playing dyers eve where he plays continuous 16th note double bass. wouldnt surprise me if it was looped or triggered because he couldnt play it.
CaptainDirtFace 1 month ago
@CaptainDirtFace it seems like he just doesnt care anymore
metallicarocks1001 4 weeks ago

MKDumas1981 1 month ago
@MKDumas1981 if you want to see a 49 year old man play blistering double bass then look up mike mangini.
CaptainDirtFace 1 month ago
@MKDumas1981 jesus christ, that is the worst excuse ever. seriously, you can look up videos of jazz drummers in their seventies with fucking INSANE chops. you don't automatically get worse with age, it's not like your body starts breaking down at forty. mike mangini for example, he's lars's age and still one of the fastest all-around guys in the world.
finowasotherchannel 1 month ago
I would like everyone to keep this in mind: They never played Dyer's Eve live while Jason was in the band. As such, this performance couldn't have been any earlier than 2004. If my James Hetfield clock is working the way it should be, this would be the middle of 2009. With a birthdate of December 26, 1963, that would make him 45 during this show, turning 46 that December. When ...And Justice For All was recorded in 1988. Using the same birthdate, he would have been 25....
