this movie is a fake, in real life, the drill seargant would've caught the bullet in his teeth (or spat napalm at it) then grabbed the gun, and beat gomer pyle to death with it. then he would go to hell and pick him up (drll seargants and demons play poker on sundays), then he would beat the shit out of him again
The only problem with this scene is that the platoon would have already turned their rilfes in the armoury if this was the last night on the island , and if joker was on firewatch he would have known that plye was out of his rack there are two fire watch on duty , one patrolling the barracks and the other patrolling the head, and they do a shake down for saved rounds when you come off the rilfe range , just saying as a former marine.

At times when I start to feel like I'm in a world of shit I yell out the Rifleman's Creed as Pvt. Pyle does in this scene. In a strange way it puts things in perspective and I feel better.

BTW -
This is definitely a great scene, perfect lighting, perfect dialogue, perfect pace, etc. I sure miss Kubrick, wish he would made a few more flicks before he left us.
This is by far one of the most freaky scenes I have ever seen..... I am not saying it scared me as much as it was surprising and just showed that no matter what sort of position you hold, you can die..... I had to replay it about five times just to process what had just happened.
I don't know, maybe it 's just me but I always got these weird Wicked Witch of the West vibes from Sargent Hartman. I think it's because he kind of sounds like him and has some similar facial features as Margret Hamilton from the Wizard of Oz. I don't know, but that's what I've always thought. It actually makes the scene that much more frightening!

joke all you want to, this is how it is. i came close to being this way, when i was 19 in navy boot camp. all the sudden, you realise this is not high school anymore. over the next three years, i saw different people kill them selves for no good reason. these were the kind of people i want to watch my back.
I agree with you, that's what I would've liked to have done to all those teachers and faculty and staff back in Elementary/Secondary school. That is the one's whom pissed me off, or made me feel very small.
This is by far the greatest scene though the entire film, It was haunting and atmospheric, I also really liked the sniper girl scene, but this is by far the deepest one.

Private Pyle just couldn't understand that Gunnery Sgt. Hartman was being hard on him for his own good. He even praised Pyle at the shooting range. Hate these weak ass faggots that wouldn't do shit if they didn't have a gun.

@sourcemaster Eh...he just lost his nerve and flipped his shit. Hartman just happened to be there; he didn't care what the man was going at before. It was hardly a cognitive thing on Pyle's part.

@sourcemaster its not that he is weak its that mentally he was unstable and even though he was praised by gunnery the damage was done to his mind. everyone handles criticism and extreme situations differently. pyle is an example of someone who shouldnt have been allowed in the military. mentally he was very unstable and coulnt handle the stress factors he faced in a reasonable manner. its not that he was a cry baby or weak, mentally he just wasnt there
